Aachen (2023 Aken in Dutch, Aix-la-Chapelle in French) is a city in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Aachen has a population of 250,000 and borders the Netherlands and Belgium. The River Wurm flows through the medieval city centre. Aachen borders Maastricht (Holland) and Liege (Belgium) and is connected in the Ruhrgebiet with Cologne (Köln), Mainz and Düsseldorf.
Aachen is well known in history as it was founded by the Romans. In the Middle Ages the city of Aachen became the Imperial Residence of the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne. Aachen is the city where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned in the Aachen Cathedral as the Kings of the Germans between 936 to 1531. The Aachen Cathedral is one of the oldest Cathedral in Europe. It was constructed by Emperor Charlemagne himself who was buried there in 814 AD.
