Aaron projected onto Liv that she always defends Kaylor just to stir the pot, when he regularly defends Rob--in fact, it's okay for both of them, and all of us, to support our friends when they're having a hard time articulating! Especially because they would be closer to the argument and the person with whom they're arguing (since we tend to argue with people we love most, feeling safe they won't abandon us if we aren't at our best/need to voice something unpleasant), we're therefore better resourced to respond in the moment. Of course this effect is combined with our individual differences with "cooler heads prevailing"--some folx may not be better resourced to defend their friends, and some folx might more easily respond in the heat of their own fights.
Love what we can learn from watching a microcosm of society on reality TV shows! :)
