This week’s film breakdown analyzes Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and why he keeps coming up short in the playoffs. Historically the Packers have had one of the best regular season runs of all time, but when they get to the playoffs it’s a different story. Is it Rodgers' fault? Matt Lafleur's? Or something else? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Yes definitely. And dudes that don't know anything about football criticize that zero blitz call against the Rams. They don't understand that it was absolutely right play call, it was just executed poorly. With only another 20 to 25 yards to get into field goal range, Bowles knew he couldn't sit back and let Stafford carve up a zone defense, it was guaranteed to fail. So he brought the zero blitz but Lavonte David and Winfield were in lala land so they lost lol. There's a difference between bad play calling and bad execution
@Chrisd0ntmiss

@@vinsanity982 true it was poor execution, another half second or so and it would’ve been a sack or at least a bad pass because pressure was right there but Winfield was too busy peeking in the backfield all the Kupp really had to do was run past him. @mikehatten5738
@mikehatten5738 Год назад
2021 was his absolute best chance tbh. He had top 3 offense and top 3 defense stacked with pro bowlers and all pros. Newer coach who had just found his play calling/coaching identity. Also underrated was how fresh his team was remember he had a lot of defensive players out until the playoffs. They held the 49ers to 3 points the whole game minus the screwed up punt. Also home field advantage in the icy cold they are used to vs a team from a warm coastal town. Can’t imagine what else you could give him to get him over the hump. Aarons problem is he’s too afraid to sling the pigskin he plays too careful. Brett farve went to more super bowls throwing 50-50 balls in a harder era with less protections. Aaron should take advantage of that like the old heads never could have.

@@marcus4155 that was an elite defense they were playing against. If you want to get technical, SF had all their elite players on the field for offense and defense. Rodgers was playing with an incomplete O-line, Dillan got injured mid game, a blocked kick for 3 points lost, the horrible blocked punt. You do realize SF offense only score 2 field goals right? Rodgers had a terrible game, but you're not gonna pin it all on him and pretend he's in control of all 3 aspects of the game
@shadysif6220
@shadysif6220 Год назад
As bad as special teams were. Rodgers blew plenty of opportunities, served to him on a platter. Before the blocked punt, Rogers missed a wide open receiver, that would of given them a new set of downs, taken time off the clock, and a play or two away from field goal range. Not to mention even if they went 3 and out after that, and the punt was blocked, it would have been a longer run to the endzone, giving the Packers more of an opportunity to tackle the ball carrier. Rodgers bears the bulk of the blame as far as I'm concerned.

It's odd that Rodgers gets the flak for all the playoff losses, but that was never said about Favre--- who single handedly ended games with interceptions... Rodgers rarely was the cause for the losses as it was either poor adjustments by the O coordinator or poor defensive showings.

@crater044
@crater044 Год назад
Im going to disagree. Favre got PLENTY of blame for the playoff losses that were clearly on him. That 6 INT game against the Rams in the 2001 season is all on Favre. His INT he threw against the Giants in his final game as a Packer was on him as well. And despite the fact that he was getting mauled all game by the Saints in the Bounty Game, the across the body INT he threw was bad and he still gets flak for it (to be fair, he was getting the shit beaten out of him all game so I can understand his desperation on the throw). But there were playoff losses that Favre had where he was not the main cause so he doesn't deserve blame for those (the Packers/Niners game with the famous TO catch to win the game in the 1998 season comes to mind). Put the blame on him when he deserves it. The issue is not that people hate on Rodgers and Favre never got hate.......the issue is that people are now starting to put the blame on Rodgers after he's been coddled and had excuses made for his playoff losses. Some of these playoff losses are not his fault......but what people need to start coming to terms with is that while people can blame McCarthy, Lafleur, the OC, the running game, the blocking, the receivers, the defense, the kicker, the punter, the hot dog guy, etc..... Rodgers deserves some blame for the losses and need to quit acting like he doesn't take part in the losing. They don't want to put the blame on Rodgers because they don't think he deserves it.....when there are times he does deserve some blame. Some of the games where the defense was getting shredded, the offense wasnt putting points on the board and drives were ending in punts (the Niners game where Kaepernick ran all over them is a prime example because that game was close for a good portion of it but after the game got away from the defense, the offense completely stalled out). The offense came out flat against the Giants in 2011 and he didn't have a great game. He played like garbage in the Seahawks 2014 game (Russell Wilson threw 4 picks and still won that game so I can't really say the defense let the Packers down), the Packers picked off Tom Brady 3 times in the second half and still couldn't take the lead and the Packers have been flat on both sides of the ball in the last two playoff losses to the Niners. As this video showed in the Bucs and Niners game......if the running game failed and if Adams wasn't open, the Packers were fucked. I think Rodgers gets too much protection from criticism because of how great he is. Them going 15-1 and dropping that Divisional Game to the Giants in 2011 is something that this team has yet to recover from. But calling a spade to spade, he did have some bad games in the playoffs that cost the team wins, he didn't do enough on offense to get the team back some games or there were elements out of his control that led to the loss (the two Packers/Cardinals playoff games come to mind where Rodgers was awesome but the team still lost). It's just gonna be part of his legacy

I think the difference is that nobody was putting Favre in the GOAT conversation due to his interception problem. He was an all timer, but he was considered a gunslinger with a great arm, but not in the GOAT conversation. Rodgers is GOAT level in all respects except legacy (Superbowl wins). Even without the SB wins, there are people that consider Rodgers as a GOAT level QB. This makes the legacy the primary criticism (that and his unique personality).

Compare his conference championships stats to other QBs that played multiple games. Him and Brady are equals. Compare his playoff stats overall to guys like Brady, brees, and other hall of fame QBs. They're great. Look at the packers points per game compared to other teams with multiple super bowl appearances in the past 20 years. He's putting up just as many points as them. @@seanwall2846 I think Rodgers is a very good QB, but out of curiosity I went back and took a look at his playoff runs, not necessarily looking for things to blame on Rodgers, but to see if there was any run where I honestly could say that there was nothing more that he could have done (something I would expect to see at least once from one of the greatest). What I found was pretty bad. 2009 Cards - Took a strip sack and fumbled the game away in overtime. 2010 Bears - In the one NFC CC game he won, he put up horrible numbers, but the defense kept the Bears to 14 late points, and even scored the game winning TD. 17 of 30 (56.7%) for 244 yards, 2 INTs and one rushing TD. 2011 Giants - Didn’t watch the game but numbers wise 26 of 46 (56.5%) for 264 yards, 2 TDs, one INT, and one fumble. Not what you expect from Rodgers. (But that Giants team front four where terrifying if I remember correctly). 2012 Niners - Was a close game in the first half, but in the second half the Packers offense couldn’t get much done, as the Niners pulled ahead, and basically just got a consolation TD against prevent D in the final minutes. Rodgers was 26 of 39 (66.7%) for 266 yards, 2 TDs and one INT. Numbers wise not a bad game for Rodgers, but I would have liked to see more in the second half. 2013 Niners - Wow I have actually missed this one. Think I will go watch it right now. Looks like a tough close game, but from the box score numbers it might actually be that game where Rodgers did everything he could to win. Hard to say without watching it. 2014 Seahawks - I can’t believe some defend Rodgers for this game. But disregarding the lack of TDs despite 5 turnovers, the final drive is where he truly fails the test. With 1:19 and 3 timeouts, everything is set up for a game winning drive. Instead it fizzled out and they had to set for yet another field goal to tie the game… 2015 Cards - I don’t give much credit for lucky hail marys. Especially when you go 22 of 38 (57.9%) for just 161 yards, one TD and one INT outside of that ugly final drive (for everything except scrambling around and throwing a deep ball it truly was a ugly drive). 2016 Falcons - Blowout sure, but with the offense producing nothing in the first half, it’s not as if they were ever in it. 2019 Niners - Same story as against the Falcons. 2020 Bucs - Arguably his best Conference Championship… But that is sort of the problem. 2021 Niners - The offense had 48 TOTAL yards in the second half… Like I said, I think Rodgers is a really good QB, but in terms of stepping up in the playoffs he just keeps coming up short…

Funny thing is that even with Rodgers and the offense struggling to do much of anything, they still should've won that game, but the Special Teams created a 13 pt swing. Usually great teams have a unit that is able to make up for the other unit when they are struggling. Don't have to look to far back at the Pats vs Rams Super Bowl. Brady and the Pats struggled against the Rams in a similar way, but their defense and Special Teams made up for it. The Packers defense SHOULD'VE made up for the offense against the 49ers (since they held the 49ers to less points than the Packers offense), but the Packers special teams submitted one of the worst performances in postseason history. There is a reason why dynasties are rare. You have to have talent (player and coaching) on all three levels of the game in order to win. If a great QB is all it took, then we would've seen many more dynasties, or almost no dynasties at all. Hell, Manning finally got his 2nd ring, but in arguably his worst season of his career. Why it is difficult to make Ws a player stat in this sport.

_Man,_ this may be The Best analysis of a "what happened" scenario that I've _ever_ seen. Kudos. Having said that, while I'm all for blaming the QB, you did so after pointing out what an amazing job the D did removing all his options. Rodgers left the pocket? Okay. Show us what was left there for him if he hadn't. How long can the pocket remain? Longer than the coverage? Then you nailed it again, Rodgers is at his best with multiple options. But that still isn't on him. If his team lacks them, that's on the rest of the team _&/or_ play-calling. How is the lack of options his fault? Anyhow, I'll check out a few other of your vids now. Really, a great breakdown of the excellent play-calling on the 49ers' D.

@@AlexRollinsNFL Yeah. My mind relaxes more when I give it something to think about. Back in John Madden's days as an announcer, he was the only one who might _occasionally_ go back & tell us what happened. I think that it would be awesome to have the option to be able to watch the game from above live. One can never truly appreciate a Rice or a Moss because we never get to see what they do from the start of a play. I remember hearing that No Matter What The Route Was, a huge part of Jerry Rice's success was because he started running them all identically. That's amazing. Imagine any young, gung-ho defender tasked with defending him & dealing with that. You'd begin to doubt yourself again & again every single play. Hmm... the drop-down menu features a video of yours claiming that Russell Wilson can only run one play. Jared Goff, the Bills' punter, maybe Deshaun Watson: NFL teams seem to be making a _LOT_ of bad signings due to the lack of talent available. Let's see if you can convince me of that one. P.S. I wanted to say, in that comparison between Goff & Stafford, I _did_ jump the gun a little. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & often need to write my ideas down before I get too tired to do so, & then I *did* get tired & couldn't form sentences to correct my criticism there. I'd need to go back & watch, but you show Stafford able to complete broken plays that you're saying Goff couldn't. But you showed Goff's failures first, &... well, you show with circles & arrows what _should_ have happened had he waited, but there's no guarantee it *would* develop that way. Nonetheless, showing Stafford throw to where he "knew" the receiver was going to be before he got there does make the point. But I remember a year with the Packers where Favre was throwing too many INTs at the start of the season, & most of the fans blamed his new receivers. Me, I felt that there is no way that they were all at different practices & Favre was the only one who knew how the route should have gone. Either they _didn't_ practice together, broken plays weren't covered etc.... like anything else, there can't be One Thing all offenses do in this situ or all defenses would know what that was in short order. So, while I need to correct & tone down what I wrote, I'm still not sold on Stafford's success being any more than discussions with his receivers _beforehand_ as to what they'll do if the play _is_ broken. Even then, yeah, that's on Goff to cover this beforehand. Or _is_ it? I dunno. Experience has taught me that many, _MANY_ people, even ones with jobs one would _think_ required that kind of forethought, lack the capacity to apply any. Somewhere, there is a video about how awful the offensive coordinator that Peyton Manning had that record year in Denver has been ever since, & how Manning's audibles were so frequent precisely because the guy's play-calling was so bad even then. I'm guessing that Goff simply can't innovate. But I don't_know_ this. I'm still convinced that Andy Reid can't. I stopped watching the NFL I forget how long ago. The year the Ravens won it all they defeated the Broncos in the conference championship game in what looked like had to be a fix: one time Flacco floated what could only be an INT & Sharpe (I think?) simply couldn't stop himself & ran past the receiver. Another time Flacco floated one, the defender turned & tripped over his own feet. I decided to try to get back into things less than two weeks ago. I still don't know if it will hold my attention. Cheers.

@@AlexRollinsNFL I'm returning to this video for a few reasons, one of which is I know a little more about the overall dynamics in Green Bay now. Early on, you point out how the Bucs' D ends up creating2nd or 3rd & 8s as opposed to & 3s "limiting the amount of plays Lafleur can call." Heh. Remember how Rodgers suggested *this preseason* how to handle the problem of the rookie receivers? Remember Lafleur's reactions? Day one & the Packers basically _threw Rodgers_ at Favre & said "learn." Has anyone in Green Bay ever _truly_ coached Aaron or treated him with respect? McCarthy sure didn't. & now Lafleur dismissed this guy with all that MVP ability & on-field experience like he was some know-nothing snot-nosed kid. I understand that most _fans_ aren't analytical like you. But for _coaches_ to dismiss Rodgers' input takes something, but it isn't intelligence. Be it ego, stupidity or utter ineptitude, Lafleur looked on in a state of Perpetual Incomprehension for *nine full weeks* as if he thought this was a Video Game & having the Aaron Rodgers avatar meant that all passes would be caught. Nine _WEEKS_ he kept calling the same long pass plays that none of his receivers could catch. The man simply does not understand that receivers aren't equal skill-levelled plug & play devices. This is what Andy Reid did to Donovan McNabb after Terrell Owens left & the same plays resulted in half the TDs. The Packers as an organization act like they don't really know how to win & that keeping in the black is a higher priority. They don't draft, trade or sign free agents for positions they need & instead just try to keep below cap. they even tend to trade or let free agents in positions they can't replace players in go! Even the way they threw Rodgers _at_ Brett Favre might have been the end result of an "if he wins us games, he might cost us $ in salary" mentality. They're not actually _trying_ to win. They don't address lacks in on-field talent etc. They just _REALLY_ lucked out with some on-field talent, but don't really care. & the end result is that what you say is right, & so is Barry here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JlN-94Og2n4.html. Similar situation in Tennessee, but specifically with the now-fired J-Rob. they went from being #1 in the AFC to not being able to win the worst division in the NFL thanks to One Guy caring more about bullying his own teammates than winning. He set them back possibly _decades_ as they now have little to no trade bait & not much draft capital. J-Rob's activities might make for an interesting video.

His numbers were horrible, and while I can understand the excuses for the first two field goals, not getting anything going for the rest of the game just isn’t enough. And at the end he gets a great opportunity to have a game winning drive, but all he gets is 48 yards and a long field goal to tie the game. If you mean the Cardinals loss in 2009, well that was amazing but he did get strip sacked to lose the game in OT. If it’s the second Cards game in 2015, well he didn’t do much of anything except get lucky on a hail mary to tie the game. I’ll admit the two early field goals were pretty conservative calls, but it’s not as if the Packers looked good moving the ball (that week or the week one loss to the Seahawks). And hey, all would be forgiven if he had led a game winning drive at the end after the Seahawks got their 2 drives in. He had all the time he needed, but the drive fizzled out at just 48 yards and again they were forced to take a field goal. And you brought up the 44 points against the Cardinals, without seeing the irony that that also required a onside kick, and 14 point swing, but in Rodgers favor. Don’t get me wrong, amazing performance by Rodgers, right up until he got the ball first in OT and fumbled it for a Cards defensive game winning TD. 2015 against the Cards, his numbers were 22 of 38 (57%) for just 167 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, before he lucked out on a hail mary (hence the name) to tie the game. @@AwijoshSun once again the 49ers only score 13 points. Rodgers couldn't get 2 TDs to win the game. In the first drive he walk down the field and score a TD and did nothing else. The special teams had to punt how many times that game? Why aren't we blaming rodgers for only scoring 1 TD. Who cares if he got into FG range. If they score 3 TDs that game the special teams mishap wouldn't had matter.
@AwijoshSun
@AwijoshSun Год назад
@@waleuska Well that works both ways, doesn't it? The lack of touchdowns doesn't matter if the special teams didn't allow a touchdown on a blocked punt. Even if he didn't play as well as expected of him, Rodgers still did enough to put the team in a position to win. It's disingenuous to ignore a bad special teams just because you have a great qb. The team as a whole dropped the ball, and that includes the QB, and the special teams.

Playing ultra safe (see Alex's video on Rodgers not attacking the middle of the field) may work in the regular season against weaker opponents. Against them, you can play not to lose and wait for them to make mistakes to beat themselves. Against elite teams in high stakes playoff games though, you're going to need to take some chances and go out and snatch victory. If you don't, if you play predictably, good teams will contain that and go out and grab victory away from you. In Rodgers case, ironically, the more he's refined his ultra safe style of play as his career has progressed, the worse he's gotten at winning in the playoffs. Rodgers needs to stop being scared of interceptions and effectively attack all areas of the field in order to beat good teams in there playoffs.

In my opinion, it's kind of resting on coaching. LaFleur has a plan for the season, it works in the regular season, then in the playoffs coaches adapt, and he has no clue what to do.

Watching videos like these makes me laugh at people who think football is just a meathead sport. Football is a chess game with even more moving pieces, and more than 2 people playing against each other. Its not only two head coaches moving their player pieces, or the whole coaching staff moving the player pieces, but also the pieces themselves moving other pieces, the Center calling adjustments on the front line, the QB barking audibles or receivers notifying the QB of something they noticed, with the same happening on the the defense. Each game is a full week of preparation, and the strategy that goes into football is incredibly complicated.

I think the Packers don't get enough criticism as an organisation. It seems like the Packers' roster always gets overrated because elite QB play elevates the entire team and the division usually isn't great. Considering for how many years they've struggled in the postseason, it's not on a player or a coach, but on the organisation. When was the last time they bad a TE with 1,000 receiving yards? For how many years were the special teams a recurring problem? Why was Mike McCarthy not fired earlier? Why have they struggled so much to draft WR in the last years?
@Attack_Pillow

You make it sound like a lot of TE’s have 1000 yard seasons. Dynamic players like that are hard to come by.
@monophthalmos9633
@monophthalmos9633 Год назад
@@Attack_Pillow 25 TE's have had at least one season of 1000 receiving yards or more. None of them has been a Green Bay Packer. The Packers seemingly didn't value that position very much in the last 10 years given how they drafted and how the utilized their TEs.
