Part 1 - AB Cleaners of Westwood, Mass. demonstrates wet cleaning technology. Owner Joon Han explains that he decided to stop using perc because he was concerned for the health of his pregnant wife and wanted to improve the air quality for his customers and employees. He talks about keys to success in using wet cleaning - i.e. using the right detergents and amounts for the different fabrics - silk, wool, cashmere. He puts the clothes in the wet cleaning machine with detergents and then uses the special dryer.

Really made for the single location owner/operator plant. A lot more hands on than dry cleaning. Absolutely need tensioning topper and form finisher. Most challenging things are sport/suit jackets because of the more structured build. Dry cleaners need to remember. On any given day 30-40% of your cleaning will be "machine or hand wash" anyway. The feel of the sweaters and wools are amazing. Biggest "fly in the ointment" is the legal aspect of wet cleaning a "dry clean only" garment. 3 months in I'm very happy with small reservations. I think that as long as non-perc solvents are ok with the feds and California 100% PWC with be a niche market. The hydrocarbon folks have already co-opted the whole organic or green issue, so it hard for customers to distinquish between the hydrocarbon bullsh*t and truely organic or green cleaning (wet cleaning or CO2).

Very informative one. Could you also give a breakdown of essential equipment/machines (wascomat EX640c etc) needed to startup a similar dry cleaning out fit?

if you do high quantity you better have 5 machines running at one time. Wet cleaning only works good in conjunction with drycleaning preferably with a greenearth machine.

We have almost 20 dedicated PWC facilities in MA. No need to have a solvent machine if you have the right training. Green Earth is not necessarily an earth friendly option. See our assessment of solvents at www.turi.org/drycleaning

please contact a Massachusetts dedicated wet cleaner from the map on the right side of this page: www.turi.org/Our_Work/Business/Small_Businesses/Dry_Cleaning/Professional_Wet_Cleaning I would recommend AB Cleaners or KMK Cleaners as good resources. You can see more case studies and reports on wet cleaning on that web page as well!

I feel it’s important to say that this is not dry cleaning it’s wet cleaning (laundry) dry cleaning will always be chemical cleaning and will always be the best method of cleaning for prolonging the life of your cloths and holding on to colour loss of your customers cloths I’m am in no way knocking this system at all it’s very clever and helpful, but we have been doing this type of cleaning for nearly 40 years please do not try and wet clean higher quality garments in water if you are an experienced dry cleaner there’s nothing you can do in water that you can’t do in perc it can just take a bit more time to do that’s all I use a Similar system my self if needs be but it’s one I have engineered my self, this year we have been approached by 3 different company’s that have asked us to process the garments that they can not which we are more that happy to do so, wet cleaning takes all the texture out of the cloths and seems to make them limp if you do it wrongly as stated you’ll be overwhelmed with complaints but I’m happy to have a system as back up in my shop 😊 great work !

The technology highlighted here is Professional Wet Cleaning (PWC) - NOT Laundry. It is a special system with a computer controlled washer and moisture control dryer and two pieces of tensioning equipment (pants topper and form finisher). You can see more at www.turi.org/drycleaning . Cleaners we have worked with have saved time with PWC as well as significant money on solvents/waste/electricity and even water! You can see our published work on our web site. With the right training you can do anything in PWC. Happy to refer you to almost 20 cleaners in Massachusetts doing dedicated PWC.

ur right dear we shouldn't wash the higher quality clothes by the water it must be dry cleaning and it will help to save life quality always we are thinking about the life quality of garments and must be use Different technology to wash and dry cleaning........according to the standard //

well, i was of the same opinion that garment texture would take a hit with wet clean. but that is not so. perc allows the sweat, urine and general body fluid to accumulate on the garments, which kind of bond and binds the garment. Wetclean is a quality clean. The process is technical and the ratios of chem to water is important and need to be understood. this is NOT a laundry wash. it is something that has made me know that I am a very good garment cleaner, and I pride myself very much about that. particularly that the cleaned garments are safe even for babies to wear. That blankets are going to be genuinely clean and safe.

thats wrong! he just washing and then dry them. This is not dry-cleaning. I See he put -in the washing machine suit, wool, silk... OMG! Stop it Please! They can not handle water.
@ToxicsUseReductionInstitute
I know it seems counterintuitive, but the new technology is not a washing machine. It's a highly calibrated computer programmed system that uses very little water to distribute the detergents efficiently. Wool, silk and linen can indeed handle it.
