I think so too, I teach English online to non first language students and sometimes they'll say something that sounds like it just doesn't make sense even in the context of "broken english"/ personal slang but then when you have them say it in their home language and slowly try to self correct you realise that they did a literal translation on the spot and a lot of languages have phrases that sound like something outlandish when directly translated into English but it would be the same if English phrases where translated into these same languages. A good example was when I told my student that they could say something was "not their cup of tea" if they wanted to say they didn't like it and the student did a direct translation and was confused as hell until I explained...imagine if I wasn't their teacher and they were someone I was talking to casually and I said that "That situation is not my cup of tea" like I bet they'd also just think wtf...
