I was going to pass on this episode, as the 2CV doesn't really interest me. I am really glad I decided to watch. It was ... as usual... a bigger story than you think.
Same here. I have an appreciation for the 2CV and what it did in its time, but they've never appealed. I'm here cos it's Jonnyvision & his enthusiasm! (Although the 2CV and Renault 4 are particularly good at herding sheep, in a dry field!) If it does get too much for you, though, Jonny, I can assist in the disposal of the carcass...! 😉
My first girlfriends family had 2 or 3 of these inckuding a dolly and a charleston. I was so taken with their character, I bought one myself. It was my first car, a 1987 in gleaming Ferrari red. It was spotless. I used to roll the roof back, stick the surfboards in the passenger seat while a mate sat in the back and would drive it 60 odd miles to North Devon coast and back. Cost me £900 in 1993 and I sold it in 1995 for a £1000. It didn't go wrong in 2 years. Great memories 👌 Can't wait for the next episode!
Loved this Jonny, I have a 1959 425cc and is restored. I just entered a local classic car show and probably only 10% of the people get it. Lots of snide comments like where is the engine and death trap but the highlight for me was an old couple probably in their 80s. The husband was describing my car to his wife and he asked if she could touch it. It turns out she was blind and they must of owned one back in the day. She felt her away around my car with a huge grin and I let her sit in and enjoy the deck chair seats. Lovely moment for both of us, clearly a small percentage still love the 2CV. ❤
I can't believe anybody keen on classic cars would make snide remarks about a 2CV. They are amazing cars that were way ahead of their time, were beautifully designed and 100 times more reliable than anything from the UK. The fact they were built for so many years is testament to how great a design they are.
Aw Jonny, I could watch hours of that! Wonderful stuff, the way the little thing scampered into the garage for some attention. Absolutely loved it! 👏👏👏
My dad had a Dyane in the mid-eighties. Whenever we drove past someone from school I used to hide in the footwell! Strange how your tastes change - I'd love one now
@@TheLateBrakeShow There are so many details, from door hinges to headlight height adjustment, from trunk lid stabilizer to self-balancing 3-lug rims, from distributorless ignition to engine hood hinge.
Really pleased to see you joining 2CV ownership.I bought my first one aged 61. Its the most fun you can have at legal speeds and you will always drive it smiling. With only 29bhp @6,750rpm you need to be on it all the time to get the best out of it. You will already appreciate just how well designed and well engineered they are. That rusty skip will live again, Darrens confidence and the boys at the 2CV shop will help you sort it out I am sure.
I've been watching your channel for many years, Jonny, so pleased to see you've discovered the charm of the 2CV. As a proud 2CV owner since the 1990s, I've been looking forward to this series dropping on the Tube.. Very pleased to know you're keeping the patination as much as possible. Darren is right to say it'll be a very reliable car. I've had my current 2CV, a 1988 car, since 2002. It was sitting on just over 70,100 miles when bought. I've taken it round the clock twice over the last 22 years. It's now sitting on a few miles short of 276,000 miles. The barrels and pistons were replaced at 250,000.
@crashbox7130 I really don't get the 2CV thing! But then I've never driven one. There's plenty car guys that sing their praises, so I definitely will drive one someday. It was interesting to see how they are built so simply and with as little parts as they could get away with
Well done Jonny! Great first episode. The phone/hand held camera style suits the whole idea behind the 2CV’s resurrection. Can’t wait for the next instalment!🐌🐌🐌
Welcome to 2CVing, I've owned them since I was 12 (my first was an AMI 8 bought for £5 😂). There's nothing like them, so characterful, so useable, and so easy to work on! Enjoy every minute of it! she's going to be a beauty ❤❤❤
Ly-ken Johnny 😂 All jokes aside, I’m very excited for the project, glad you are rescuing this gem. Maybe you can grow back some of the lichen and moss using yogurt on protected panels
I’m 46 this year. I’ve gone from hating these things to really… like REALLY want one. Gorgeous ❤. ( just to be clear I’ve only just started to like the E-type 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️)
Loved watching these racing in the 80s, it was so funny seeing them toppling over in the corners one after the other!! They were clearly not meant to race but so much fun to watch 😂
I was about to comment that you should leave it unpainted when you said you were going to do exactly that! It will look great once all the fittings and mechanicals are smart and working, and the bodywork is just repaired and solid. That car is already 61, but will soon be refurbished, yet still looking 61! Good plan and I’ll enjoy watching it being executed by you and your friends.
My great uncle was a mechanic. He did some work on an FJ ute and the guy didn't pay him. So he parked it out the back and 20 years later it was still there with a tree growing through it! By that time it would have so valuable if it was in good condition.
I've wanted a 2cv for a while, beyond my budget unfortunately however when you did your ecv video I spotted that car, it's perfect that patination is beautiful!
Been looking forward to this video series since the beginning of the year! I've also been restoring my 2cv since then, hopefully I'm on the home stretch now and cannot wait to have it back. Welcome to the brethren Jonny!
Lovely project Jonny! I allways had a weak point for the 2cv ! My first car was an Acadiane ! The sound, the smell, the driving experience gives you a smile from ear to ear! Can’t wait for the second, third, fourth and fifth part! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙
Very nice one. I am thinking about buying a 2CV van (AK400) for quite some time now and it seems they are really nice to work on. I will follow this series.
When you are done you should consider olive drab canvas for the top and some artifical moss decorations for the bumper to keep the original asthetic which was quite David The Gnome chik.
Some cars just want to be saved, this is one of them, I truly believe sometimes the car almost chooses it's owner, this 2cv has been flirting with you the last couple of years or so while you didn't know it, like a really friendly version of Christine good luck with the resuscitation
Utterly fabulous content as always. You inspire me to keep things simple, no unnecessary hype and amateur dramatics. One of my favourite cars and this is now one of my favourite videos ❤
I'm loving this Jonny! I used to own a 1969 AZAM 2CV with the smaller engine that I putted together with my late grandad, I freaking miss them both! Wating for the rest of the series!!!
Well done Johnny, its the most fun going around corners at speed youll ever have driving a car, it just wont tip over going forwards, just remember dont do it in reverse oir it will tip over, I restored one about ten years ago Now paid to have the floors replaced which was expensive, put in the electronic ignition and repainted the wings coach painting them with red hammerite paint in my living room in January with the heating on, the red hammerite smooth matched the red paint beautifuly. I added lots of upgrade parts and it passed its MOT first attempt, I found the inboard front brakes to be a bit of pain to adjust and the rear drums bound a little for a while until they settled in. All in all a lot of fun even for a six ft 6inch tall driver with my eyeline level with the top frame of the windscreen. I think the seat rubbers were the most expensive of everything purchased there are a 100 in the back seat and they are a pound each for the good ones. Enjoy.
As a happy owner of a 1974 model, I can only appreciate this project, it's a good thing to keep the patina of the original body, it has so much more charm, can't wait to see the rest 🤩👍
My mum had one for years and i remember that the starter motor died but because the car was so light with some careful parking we just bump started it every time. Much more charm than the two Tesla in the background.

He knows how to play the long game if he knew you're feeling sympathetic towards it and then kept sending you photos of it suffering! I would definitely have kept the moss on the bumper, though. I have no need for a second car but every time I'm prompted to think about 2CVs I increasingly imagine getting one... so this could be a dangerous project to follow, hehe.
Absolutely love this. Iv had a hankering for a 2cv for years now. My buddy bought one about 15 years ago on a galvanized chassis. He has another now that he plans on engine swapping a BMW bike engine in to. Think it's about 100 bhp ish. Doesn't sound much but power to weight is mad good. Can't wait to see more of this. Do think you should have left the moss tho 🤦
Jonny, brilliant job on taking on this as a project, I totally feel your sentiment for its appearance and respect your vision for simple classic motoring. I have recently sort of entered the 2CV world, I am now the custodian of my fathers 2017 Pembleton which has a 602cc 2CV engine on twin Del’Orto carbs, with finned heads and no cooling fan - it’s great fun, as you know, a bit like riding a classic motorcycle, while being seated 4 inches of the tarmac !
Never really liked 2CV`s but as i head full speed into my fifties i am craving simplicity in everything. Saw a 2CV at Goodwood breakfast club yesterday and had a proper look! Fantastic episode as always. Seems that old buggy is gonna be a star now after all that time waiting for you Jonny. Great channel.
@@TheLateBrakeShow I've fitted a 'solid state' coil to my 2CV, which is also fitted with a Dutch electronic ignition called 123ignition, and apart from a yellow rubber seal rather than a black rubber seal, is identical to the original 2CV coil fitted by Citroen. The original 2CV coil is filled with oil that acts as a coolant. The oil dries out over time and the coil overheats and fails.
Love this car, definitely a must to keep on the road, the suicide doors are fab and I would personally keep the patination , imagine peoples faces when you pull off with a big silly grin on your face 😁.
Brilliant Jonny love this can’t believe how quick that started 🤣🤣looking forward to part 2 well done you Darren and his team for cracking on and getting this old beauty back on road well done guys 👍🏽
Awesome Johnny! Absolutely fantastic. Good lad for saving this beaut. Your efforts are much appreciated, this will be a a vey inspiring and interesting series. Your joy is contagious
Clear coat it Jonny. It's brilliant patina for sure!! Greetings from the Netherlands PS: Growing up in the Somme in the 80's, the neighbouring farmer had one old 2cv in a field. You could just about recognise it used to be a 2cv, but it was honestly more rust than car. I could still sit 'in' it (roof gone) and pretend to drive it. Vroom vroom.. Great times.
❤❤ lol... how ironic loving jonny smith and wat he does ... darren Arthur i sued to work for... hes great to.... hes loved the 2 cv since i can remember:):) xxxx
The aluminium grille with the big chevrons, is the best 2CV grille. I transferred mine between cars, and still have it as a workshop decoration. Swop it's feeble little headlamps for, 7 in H4 Cibies (as on a Lotus 7 clone) and drive just as fast at night.
With this car in your collection, you could have your own: "FOQ/ME" (FESTIVAL OF QUAINT/MILDLY EXCEPTIONAL... I doubt the abbreviation for the event will present problems.) Can't wait to see the patina really come out in the bidywork. Something suggests you know what you're on about when suggesting a wax to seal it in.
Its just so cool. I did say its one I'd buy off you in the future. Its a true Hoodride. Sorted underneath yet proud of its 60 plus years wear and tear and that baked exterior makes any bit of chrome pop. Just perfect.
This is brilliant! Love it! I could seem all the excitement on your face! If you ever get time, I could really see you team up with Tasty Classics on a rescue or a project. You two would be wonderful together.
Brilliant video Jonny, this is going to be fun to fallow, Jonny all the years I've lived in Winnipeg i have only seen a few 2CV's and both were 4 i believe and the front seats were buckets almost like a lawn chair, just made a little better and saw the owner remove the seat in like 2 minutes and he said he took it out to change the seat cover on it and the front passenger one also, i love the simplicity of them 😎 in for a penny in for a pound 👍
fantastic series Jonny. This may sound weird but i like to name my vehicles and thought of a name for this one based off reg number. Anya. Always had a soft spot for 2CVs. 🙂
It’s gorgeous, especially with the patination! So excited for you to be getting in to a 2CV. I’m sure you’ll keep finding more and more things that make it joyful. This is probably the most exciting video series I’ve looked forward to in ages… like Harry M’s Fulvia Zagato restoration, or his Cinquecento. Can’t wait for the next episode! 🤓👏🏻
I love old VW bugs and owned one that I had restored some time ago. A couple years ago I found another bug, and I did the same as you . I wanted it but I sure didn't need another one, wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money. But I wanted to save it. It was pretty run down but had good bones. Anyway, I bought the car and got it back on the road. I'm so glad I did. It turned into a real gem. I still have both of these vehicles. So If you can see your way to afford it and you want it, then I say get it and save it.
