Manston airport really is a shadow of its former self.
Having grown up on and around manston airport, I have many many fond memories of this place. I can remember as a child when RAF Manston housed the Sea king Search and rescue helicopters, trained its young pilots in Chipmunks and boasted its own flying club which i spent a lot of time in.
My father also flew from manston in his own Cessna 150 Aerobat, 2 seater high wing aircraft.
Manstons runway boasts a length of 2,752 metres in length and a width of 61 metres
I can remember many an air show, visits from the Red Arrows and Concorde.
Later in its working life, the airport operated cargo planes in and out on a regular basis before closing in 2014.
Since then its been in steady decline. It was used for holding HGV's during cross channel disruption following brexit and amidst the covid pandemic.
Many attempts have been made over recent years to re open the airport but at each step it has met with resistence. I for one hope it does open again as an airport, bringing in much needed work and commerce to the area.
