Case 580c backhoe that the previous owner left for 10 years. The owner was kind enough to let me work on the machine where it sat. Spoiler I had some uninvited guests in the middle of the video.
will it start crane video • Will it run?! Abandon...

I have a 77 580c. Would run for 10 mins, then ran rough. Changed both filters.bled, has run right ever since. If you are rrepacking the swing cylinders, they can be done without removing from machine. I used my case to build my barn and other heavy jobs on my 8 acres. Great machine.

My Ford 655 A extendahoe sat for 8 years out in the Weather with the Head Off.. Locked the Motor Down and Rusted the threads out of the Block at the Head Bolts.. I Rebuilt the Engine with Thread inserts at all of the Head bolt Locations and New 0.030 over Pistons.. Rebuilt the Shuttle Shift transmission while the Block was Out.. Had less than 6000 in the Whole hole with the New Rebuild on the Engine.. Worked with it and Made Enough to buy a Dump truck and Build a Great trailer to Haul it.. Made 3 times what I paid for it over the years and then Sold the Whole lot for 10,000 .. Like to Have an Excavator Deal like that Come along Right Now.. Thanks, Richard

I operated an earlier model with no roll cage for a reclamation district that was stingy on repairs and maintenance. I am pretty sure the 580(C) is in better condition than the one I used. It was beat to hell and so was the rest of the equipment that were so old, they should have been placed in museums. Some irrigation pumps dating back to circa 1915. The welder in the shop was an old Lincoln arc style with a mercury pool rectifier vacuum tube that lit up blue when using the stinger. My high school electronics teacher told me about them and I actually saw and used one. Yeah, I mean really old and cheaply run that place was.

I bought a 1987 JD 410B Turbo 2 years ago for $2,500. Rebuilt the engine, re stabbed it to find out the trans was shot, rebuild that and it ran great, 10 months later the turbo took a dump (was iffy to start) Bunch of hoses and misc stuff later I am into a Backhoe for $8,000. I love it. Currently have the swing cyl 's off for a repack and bushing replacement Worthy investment. Mine is prob worth $15,000-20,000

If you want to check a motor that has been sitting for water in it - first pull the dipstick, if the oil is way high then there's probably water under it. If it's high, or no dipstick then crack the sump drain plug let a little out, if it's oil - re-tighten . if you get water just wait till oil starts coming out. It's no use putting a stick in there, as the oil coats all of it that was in water as you pull it out.

well I stopped the video soon as it fired up, to say, I really hope he didn't put gas in the tank, as he said he was going to get some gas in it, as it sure don't sound like a gas engine, both the 580 B and C were not gas, I found a 580B sitting on an island that people lived on year round, it was parked in the bush with a poplar tree growing up though it, has I nice cab and all on it, good turf tires on the back, I asked around who owned it, this was in March, and I drove across the lake on the ice road, people told me it belonged to the town ship, and it been sitting there for 5 years or more. I went to the town ship office and asked about it, they told me it stopped driving and there shop mechanic told them it would cost far to much to fix, I asked if they would sell it, as I know the problem with these 580B and C when they stop driving, specially when they told me, when you put it in forward, it jumps a head an inch or 2, and when put in reverse it jumps back an inch or 2 and stops, it is a commune problem with these, and a simple day fix, but many pull the transmission out and rebuild it at a huge cost, when it don't need that at all, so I asked if they would sell it, they told me if I can get it off the island before the ice was no longer safe to drive on, I can have it for $500, and they also had a good set of construction back tires for it as well as the service manual that covers all the 580 models, so I dumped the fuel out of it, changed filters, and it fired up after 5 turns and stopped, I bleed the system and a way it went, I let it warm up, and changed the oil and filter, then started it up, and pushed it out to the road with the backhoe, then got a flat bed to pick it up and hall it 180 miles to my home for $300 as they had to go to my town to pick up a insurance car they bought, it sat in my yard for a year, before I got around to work on it, all the backhoe bucket pins and bushings needed to be cut out and new ones welded in, but first was to get it to drive, I spent a few hours a day here an there working on getting it fixed so it would drive, spent about $300 in new oil and a few dollars on a few small parts and peace's and had it driving in 2 weeks, total time spent, was about 12 hours, been working great ever since. well back to the video..

that's good, I have seen in real life people put gas in,, and when you said gas, it brought bad the seens… lol, the service manual they gave me covers all the 580 models, it is a huge book, weight about 12 Lbs. I loved the great deal I got, all because there top mechanic told them it needed a full transmission re-build, so they bought a new backhoe, you see all the 580 are the same problem, case never made a clean out for the sump oil pick up, so you make one with a drill bit and 1" tap, 1" pipe plug, use a parts air cleaning spray gun

sitting a long time you might have to reseal more than a few rams, you want the OTC tool that works with a 3/4 breaker bar, pull the little phillips screw and remove the cylinder gland for resealing. I rebuilt my 73 and it took a full day to split the tractor, the reverse and forward clutch packs were thrashed, it was, back 20 years and they were $400 each. But it was a reasonable job with the service manual. Check your pressures and the trans filter out front (for metal)
