@@CALDTX No problem, and nice find. I remember randomly looking up Hypermart USA when I was young and just getting into dead and dying retail, it's cool that you were able to find this before it met the wrecking ball.
Thank you for sharing this. I used to visit this exact location in 1989 as a kid and was in absolute awe of its sheer size. Good memories here with my family.
When I worked there in the early 90s, the "ceiling" was red. Funny you posted this so recently. Just last night I talked to someone I used to work with there all those years ago. Over six-hundred people worked in that monster of a store. :)
I was there watching the day they demolished this store (Garland). Broke my heart. The city allowed a concrete batch company to take over the property. It looks like crap now. ☹️ I'd so hoped they'd put in something people could enjoy.
Hey me too. I only have one vauge memory of it when I was 7 in 2007 before it shut down. My aunt lived in the neighborhood right across from it so I would always see it when I visited. Cool stuff.
So many memories here from the 90s...i still have pics of a pony ride they had set up right outside pretty aure it wasnt them directly but just a good memory
I wish so badly I'd been able to try to explore the abandoned Hypermart in Kansas City near Bannister. I remember that whole area was an urban ex's dream.. multiple strip malls worth of abandoned buildings due to the mall closing. I remember being driven through there with my mom. I was just too young to be doing urban exploring at the time. Luckily I was able to enjoy the VERY tail end of the location and see the Lubys and Pets Mart that was left there.. both of them are gone now.
I remember that. Went to the Apollo many times. I lived a little further down Garland rd. (78) towards downtown in a little neighborhood behind Wyatt's Cafeteria. The traffic was horrendous for HyperMart's Grand Opening. People were parking on the opposite side of the road next to the train tracks and walking out into the middle of traffic, causing HUGE traffic jams. A few years later, they built the Wet n' Wild water park near by where the Car Max is now.
@@CALDTX before the hypermart there was a drive in theatre that sit on that property. I remember watching Godzilla at that theater. Many oil changes I got at that hypermart when I was a teenager
Bitter sweet to see this....I worked there for a short time I think that was in 89-90, Born and raised in Garland, I remember the Apollo drive in theater that was there b4 hypermart. Also Sam Walton flew in to Dallas when this project was being built, he landed at the airport that was at Garland and Northwest....it's now a park. or was the last time I was there......thanks for the post....
Nice. Right after my video. Didn't want to go in because I already saw pics online so it wasn't worth it to me to try. This is cool however, I kinda miss my Hypermart trip now.
We lived in North Dallas & my family would go to this store once a week. It was gigantic! I remember always chilling at the electronics section to play Nintendo then super Nintendo. Great memories!
Me and a friend hopped the fence to skate in this place once, it was super creepy but fun to explore. Wish I could've gone back before it was demolished.
Today is the first time I've ever heard of HyperMart USA. Wal-Mart has been in my area since they bought out (or merged) with Big-K in 1979. Opened their own "new" building in 1984 then opened their first Supercenter in 1994. So how did this market differ from their Supercenter?
@@CALDTX This location was so stripped by this time that there's nothing interesting to preserve. There's no point of a (Rare Inside Shot) if the interior has been stripped of anything that made it distinct.
