Let's explore the second part of the ghost town of Santa Chiara, that is what remains of the cinema and the abandoned inn, where the workers found refreshment after working on the dam between 1924 and 1997, the year of their definitive abandonment!
In the province of Oristano, precisely in the territory of Ula Tirso, there are the remains of what was once the village of Santa Chiara. Between 1917 and 1924, along the Tirso river, the dam with the same name was built, which gave rise to Lake Omodeo.
On April 28, 1924, this important engineering work was inaugurated in the presence of the King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III, thus creating what was for decades the largest artificial lake in Europe. The engineer who designed this important work was Angelo Omodeo, from whom the lake takes its name.
The village of Santa Chiara was built at that time to house the employees of the then Sardinian Electric Company, who worked in the service of the dam. For decades the village was inhabited by about 450 people. Inside the village, in addition to the buildings that housed the employees, there were also a cinema and a church.
But around the eighties, things changed and the moment of oblivion arrived for the old dam. Due to some important lesions that could make the dam critical, the dam and the hydroelectric power plant were decommissioned and over the years the village was abandoned.
In 1997 the new dam was inaugurated, which took the name of Eleonora d’Arborea.
The new dam, higher and larger, caused a rise in the water level, submerging everything in the valley: forests, nuraghi, the remains of the village of Zuri destroyed and rebuilt in another point, the house of the central head of the dam which emerges from time to time from the lake, when the water level drops.
Before the village was abandoned, the employees asked to be able to buy the houses but this request was denied. In fact, Enel preferred to sell the whole village as a whole to a single company, the sale never took place and the village was left to its sad fate.
After passing the gate, we enter the abandoned village and notice how the vegetation over the years has begun to take over the spaces.
The window frames of the houses are destroyed, the walls peeling, the interiors keep in addition to the rubble, some objects of those who once lived in these places.
A clock without hands on the floor reminds us that time has taken on a different value here in Santa Chiara.
The church is the only building still well preserved, while the cinema, with the ancient wooden chairs inside, embodies a sweet melancholy.
In recent years, the village has been a meeting point for those who practice some recreational activities such as airsoft, which is why the external walls of some houses have writings.
Over time, all the inhabitants left the village of Santa Chiara, all but one person. Mrs. Isabella, now ninety years old, was the only one who did not abandon her house located outside the entrance gate to the village. Her family moved to this place when her father began to work on the construction of the dam and apart from a few years spent on the peninsula, Isabella spent the rest of her life in the town of Santa Chiara.
The choice not to leave her home was very courageous, as well as noble and ambitious was her dream: to restore life to the country by creating a reception center for women and minors who are victims of abuse. After having created a non-profit organization and sent all the necessary documents to request the free loan of the village, the answers are slow to arrive and unfortunately her wish has not yet been realized.
Meanwhile, the village of Santa Chiara continues to live in abandonment, in the hope that sooner or later her streets will welcome new lives and new stories.
