Welcome to TexasHillbilly. This is the 1st video of a series on the FREE, forgotten 1997 Ford Ranger.
In this episode we work as a family to clean it up and resurface the cylinder head and assemble the engine with the intention to fire it up for the first time since 2018.

Good morning from Spain, great video and how your whole family participated in the restoration. God bless you. The golf cart looks spectacular, the pick up is going to look spectacular, although to be honest I'm more eager to see the finished GMC van. Greetings and as always, excellent video.

To help clean the Clumpy Oil, go buy 4 5quart jugs of cheap transmission fluid. Fill up the engine with trans fluid(add diesel fuel too if you want), let it sit for a week or two then drain it. The trans fluid will clean the inside of engine & lubricate the seals. Best of luck! Love your channel! Greg from Frisco

@@TexasHillbillyI worked as a Service Advisor & Manager at a Ford dealership for 22yrs so I learned some tips from my techs. Trans fluid is a great cleaner. Watching you do the brakes on the van, Sam doing the yard! 😂

Great idea getting the kids involved in the cylinder head re-surfacing and engine re-assembly. I tried to find the issue you're having with the Ranger coolant getting into the oil pan. I couldn't find anything. My guess is the timing cover behind the water pump has oil passages and coolant passages right next to each other? Sherman is a good dog, very loyal, he loves to be with you. The kids did a great job on the seat covers for the golf cart! Good luck with the troubleshooting of the Ranger!

Is this a 3.0 or 4.0? If it's the 3.0, the timing cover gasket was notorious for this. FelPro makes a very nice replacement that is much better quality than the OEM.

I wished i would have told you the easier way to drill out your old ignition lock. The button you press to remove the lock the normal way is very easy to drill with a 3/16 bit, then the whole assembly will slide out.

Good thing was not installing the oil.drain plug before adding coolant

I didn't hear you give the engine size when I watched this the other day. Definitely need to check the timing cover gasket as it was very common to fail on the 3.0 Rangers and cause coolant to get in the oil. I replied to another user about this as well. It could be other things like a cracked block, head, intake or the other cylinder head gasket, but the timing cover is the easiest thing to check. Hope that's all it is.

Always appreciate your input. We'll tear into the front end soon and hopefully find a hole. Good thing is a water pump is only $30 or so.
