Demetrius I Anicetus of Bactria 'the Unconquered'
My other content: linktr.ee/abandonedhistory
The Kingdom of the Romans and Moors (Collapse of Roman Empire)
Intro: Hey everyone, thanks for checking out my RU-vid Video! This is my "Abandoned History" series, where I cover historical events that get forgotten by pop culture and history classes.
Description: Demetrius I “The Unconquered”, King of Bactria took the Bactrian throne in 200 BC after the death of his father Euthydemus I. Bactria is a region that encompasses parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. One fascinating aspect of the Greco-Bactrians was their eventual conversion to and development of “Greco-Buddhism”. Demetrius I “the Unconquered” Was himself a Buddhist. But he and many other Greco-Buddhists still venerated the greek pantheon as well. At the time of his death, his realm was said to span from the Aral sea in the north to the Kathiawar peninsula in the south to the mountains of Daylam in the west to the deserts of Xinjiang in the far east.

Got this in my recommended after watching your Mauro-Roman video, and I must say this was an excellent quick dive into this topic! The analysis of coins and artifacts, of writings of his Empire, and of details like family heritage provided a very clear image of what happened. I like how you often specify exactly which evidence points to certain details, and keep to what’s “known” while mentioning mention speculations, showing dedication to not stretch the truth. Again, awesome videos, thank you for the education, hope your videos blow up :P

What do we know about the relations between these Greco Bactrians and the motherland Greece? And what did the Greeks and Romans know about Buddhism?
@abandonedhistoryUS
@abandonedhistoryUS Год назад
This is such a terrific question that really could have it’s entirely own video of its own. Greco-Bactria did remain connected with the rest of the Hellenic sphere through trade and the fact they bordered the Hellenic Seleucid Empire. The Greeks and Romans certainly knew of Buddhism, the Greeks probably had a bit more knowledge of it than the Romans although we do know that both groups were well aware of the religion. In terms of “what” they knew (for European based Greeks) it is really hard to say. We do know there were Greek Buddhists in Egypt due to grave stones with Buddhist symbols being found in Alexandria and a Buddha statue was found in southern Egypt. It’s likely safe to assume that the Greeks knew Buddhism reasonably well and that there was a minority of Greek Buddhists living in the Mediterranean world until the rise of Christianity.

Eucratides was a great general. He fought so succesfully against the Sogdians that many people saw him as their leader. He was mentally sane, which was at that time very rare, and - therefore - wanted to stop the pointless orientation towards India of that Greek-Bactrian kingdom. There was huge tension about this issue. This was about to happen, when sth definitely happened that started it : Eucratides was killed, on a wild manner (crushed under a war chariot), by his son. That civil war was a huge mess. The "Yuezhis", an european-looking people coming from China (most likely descending from the Afanassievo Culture) invaded then the kingdom. The Greeks had to flee in the indo-greek area.

This is a really great question and one that’s difficult to answer. What does seem pretty clear is that the officer core and generals would have spoken Greek as lingua Franca. Many Greek colonists moved to Bactria following its conquest. Likely many of the heavily armored Calvary and officers spoke Greek. While foot soldiers likely spoke mostly bactrian but were trained to fight in the Macedonian style of war.
@abandonedhistoryUS

@Rajnasya that could be possible but there is very little evidence to support this. It’s equally as possible that he died an unexpected death from medical related complications or he was killed by his own troops. But the claim that he was killed by enemy forces is an unsubstantiated claim pushed by nationalist historians. Everyone is willing to believe that outcome but you just need evidence to support it.

I would agrue Alexander's death of being "sudden and mysterious" and all the other failures including the battle against Porus was a coverup by the Greeks. The Porus battle was definitely a coverup to hide their humiliation by a small outpost king without facing Chandragupta Maurya. But the second one is believed in India that Alexander was poisoned in India by Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya's (his guru) wise planning - some even suggesting that Chandragupta was disguised as a Greek soldier himself to get to Alexander.

He just ruled in parts of modern-day afghanistan which already was under greeks from time of Alexander&Selucus...and later eveolved to 'indo-greeks'. Indian sources talk much more about Dimitrius and Menander-1(milind) than Alexander the great(about whom there r hardly many indian sources)...and even those sources only mention Menander-1 as the king who conuered parts of North India....which he had mentioned in his inscriptions as 'YavanaRaj'. There were 2 big battles between Menander-1 and Indian king Pushyamitra Sunga which ultimately resulted in sort of stalemate stopping Indo-greek expansion a start of Gangetic plain. Dimitrius was nowhere as impactful or as big 'conquerer'.

Demetrius was thoroughly thrashed by Pushyamitra's son, Agnimitra Shunga and thrown back to Sagala (modern Sialkot). Also no Greek managed to conquer Pataliputra. The most they could conquer was to Mathura. Western historians have a tendency of exaggerating Greek achievements based on obvious biased writings by Greek writers.

Indian historians tend to downplay greatly the role Indo-Greek kings played in the region and that down playing seems be rooted in nationalism. There was clearly interference by the Greeks in the religious life of the Indian people. The Shunga Empire was from the beginning created with the intention of getting rid of the buddhism. Several years later, in Gandhara, the White Huns made the same and actually managed to make that cleaning.

Between Maurya and Gupta dynasties was the uncertain time. Pushyamitra Shunga and his son Agnimitra Shunga fought the invaders such as Greeko Bactrian satraps and Huns from Central Asia. You’ve unfortunately presented one sided history glorifying the invaders and highlighting the Religious conflict. You should study a bit more about Buddha to understand that he’s considered one of the avatars of Vishnu. Leftist historians of our land glorified all sorts of invasions. You just portrayed the same. People are ignorant about most facts, therefore they’re acknowledging the video.
@abandonedhistoryUS
@abandonedhistoryUS Год назад
Sorry I have to strongly disagree with you analysis of my video. I think you are presuming my view points with out fully understanding what I said. Additionally, in the video I bring up the religious conflict as a potential possibility but I mention that it lacks hard evidence. I am a Buddhist and I do know that Hindus consider him to be a reincarnation of Vishnu, that doesn’t mean Hindus haven’t discriminated against Buddhists in the past but nice try. Finally your whole statement on left wing history sources is utterly ridiculous. The juxtaposition your talking about is Indian nationalist historians vs western historians. Since I studied history in the English speaking world, generally my sources will be ones that have been translated into English. Like I have responded to other comments, if you are looking for a nationalist historian recount of Indian history, there are plenty of channels you can watch, mine is not and won’t ever be one of them. Should we not see history from all sides? I feel like the story has been told quite a bit from the side of Pushyamitra Shunga. Demetrius on the other hand has very few videos made on him.

Actually the Greeks refused to convert to Buddhism only those Greeks who accepted Mauryan empire converted. If both Greeks and Hindus accepted Buddhism like rest of the world did back then like Chinese, mongols, Iran, Afgans, South Asian, Japan etc., it was an Antidote to end all human wars as envisioned by Ashoka the Great. We would be living in a far different world if Sunga didn't behead the emperor, may be in few hundred years hindus and Greeks would have accepted Buddhism and we today would have been living in a diffrent world seeking happiness and inner understanding. That's the great failed step of humanity. Instead Buddhism morphed into Judo Roman values and became Christianity and redesigned to fight Islam. Just like linguist use language tree to find origin in religion Buddhism gave rise to Christianity. Then Judaism, Christianity gave raise to Islam as it copied word for word both texts.

@@notevencalm Christianity and Islam are both offshoot of Buddhism. There was no religious conversion on global scale untill Buddhism began. So if Buddhism never existed then neither Islam or Christianity would have had the idea to begin. Christanity is nothing but Judio-Roman Buddhism meaning body Buddhism and mind of the Jews. Buddhism is root cause of all these later proselytizing religions. It gave the blue print for global proselytizing. So if it did continue in India then the massive flood of buddhist missionaries would have converted all the enemies before they emerged. Demetrius not able to conquer India rather he was defeated by Agnimitra-Pushyamitra Rulers of Shunga Dynasty and also as per Hathigumpha Inscription by King Kharavela of Odissa
@abandonedhistoryUS
@abandonedhistoryUS Год назад
Appreciate the comment but If you actually watched the video you would see that I say that Demetrius I never completed his goal! But to reference the Hathigumpha inscription, I have actually read the entire thing prior to making this video. The issue with that inscription is that few modern historians view its "account of Demetrius" as accurate in any way. The only exception is Romila Thapar and as much as I do respect her as a scholar many of the claims she makes, especially regarding the indo-greeks, are weak and mostly unsubstantiated. She does produce some very strong works on Ashoka and later Hindu-Islamic communal relations but she is not the best for Indo-Greek/Indo-Bactrian History. Quote: "Romila Thapar too, in The Past Before Us published in 2013, states that it is "probably the Indo-Greek king Demetrios"" However, according to Ramaprasad Chanda and other scholars, this identification results in "chronological impossibilities".[3] The important thing to keep in mind is that much of what is being discussed regarding the Indo-Greeks is still in hot debate but I always try to present the most widely accepted version amongst academia. In this case, especially I chose not to include the inscription due to the mathematic impossibilities of the chronology if the Hathigumpha inscription was actually referring to Demetrius. The most widely excepted theory is that they are not referencing Demetrius but one of his descendants. I hope you find this helpful! But different perspectives are welcome on my channel, I hope this clears up some of the confusion.
