ABANDONED IBM CRT Monitor Restoration! Can it run Minecraft?

In this video, I completely restore this abandoned IBM 8512 Color CRT Monitor that I found in a Los Angeles Data Center that was abandoned in 1994. This thing was destined to it's death. Instead, it ended up at my house where it received all new capacitors, a removable cable mod, and a good clean up! Also, yes... I will be keeping this thing.

IMAGINE if some company with some deep pockets re-engineered the CRT monitor, to make it smaller, lightweight, compact, and able to handle today's insane resolutions like 4k and extremely high refresh rate. Gamers could rejoice as we dump LCD since its garbage.

Unfortunately, the CRT design was already optimised to maximum efficiency before LCD's hit the market, since CRT's were incredibly complex and the technology had been around for 3x longer than LCDs. So even if we brought them back today, aside from some quality of life changes and circuit optimisations, CRT's would probably still be at the same resolution that we left them at. The colour contrast however is top notch and is still something modern panels are unable to achieve.
@goblinphreak2132
@goblinphreak2132 2 года назад
@@cathodert7890 ill give you the age difference. But optimizing it, thats bullshit. We can make electric guns so small now compared to the huge size we used then. We have not optimized that technology all.... And yes i agree we could make the circuit boards smaller and more efficient which means less power waste. Im sure there would be a way to optimize the glass tubes themselves making then lighter weight and slimmer/less bulky. However as far as resolution i literally believe we could get 1080p and even 4k out of a "modernized" CRT. Its just a matter of someone smarter than me outting in the work. The only downside would be that modern electronics and graphics cards no longer have analog output, its all digital. Probably the only real barrier to bringing back the technology. Thankful next month OLED is hitting the gamer space via Alienwares QD-OLED display which is gonna be epic and im buying one. 3440x1440, 175hz, 0.1ms gtg times, insane contrast and color, no ips glow no backlight blooming. Gonna be amazing.

Remember that plasma screens are basically the next generation of crts, an in-between for crt and lcd technology. Also, crts generally have pretty much zero input lag that lcd has yet to reach. I'd still use my lcd since they're bigger, but I'd rather have a crt projector if I'm going to want an ultimate experience.

Make sure that flux is non washable , otherwise it can casue corosion in few years - always wash it with isopropylalcohol 2. Please do not use hotglue - it non repairable, use shrink tubes on every single join, it the best and professional ! 3.That old caps throwed in regular thrash hurts me, please sort it to special waste :( But wow, at all its nice work, figuring out the wire diagram etc.. ! It’s amazing seeing how much you cleaned up & replaced, but I feel like rather than cut the sides of the VGA cable you could’ve moved the VGA input to be on the outside of the CRT shell. Anyway, it’s wild how a CRT from 1994 also supports 480p, but I guess CRT desktops monitors were always ahead of the curve when it came to supported resolutions

I used to have the 12” version of this IBM monitor back in the early 90’s which I used with my first PC. I had a big problem with it where the VGA cable failed just where it meets the VGA plug. The monitor was quite old back then and I had a lot of difficulty obtaining a replacement cable and I could not get one here in the UK. In the end I got in touch with a company who had the pin out and were willing to cut the cable a little shorter and fit a new VGA plug. I received the cable back in the post, fitted it and the colours were wrong. I sent the cable back again and they got it right the second time! I was so pleased to get my IBM display back again! A suburb quality monitor with strong casing and fitted with a Panasonic CRT. I didn’t like the hard wired VGA cable and power cable which let it down for me.

You might want to turn down the blue gain on the CRT because it's a little overbearing 😂. And try useong a hair dryer and a flat piece of metal to Un warp the plastic. Might help. I've done it to fix warped records before. Good job saving that monitor dude! I prolly wouldn't have been as bold to re make the connections on the back that were cut. I'm not that good at soldering yet.
@Shyzah
@Shyzah 3 года назад
Thanks man. Yeah, I definitely need to adjust the blue gain. I have yet to look into it but it will only take 30 seconds to open it back up. I'm actually fine with the plastic being warped as it tells a story. The building that it was in was set on fire by some lunatics a few years ago and I believe that the heat from that fire made the monitors plastic warp even. After all, the monitor was in the same building just down the hall.

On that VGA cable after hot gluing it you should have gotten yourself some 3M rubberized tape stuff ... It's not like tape when you lay it over itself it's sort of like goes into itself it becomes one solid rubber sheath and it doesn't unravel over time.... I use this trick on all of those kind of repairs. You can find that rubberized tape at like Lowe's and home Depot if you're just looking locally I usually just order it offline

It's a shame that this monitor can't do resolutions more than 480p, because I'd consider it as my main monitor. I currently don't have a monitor, so what are the best places to find old CRT monitors for cheap prices? I personally prefer CRT to LCD displays for my old retro gaming PC and vintage computers, and honestly modern computers, too because of versatility in resolutions and refresh rates.
