You are correct about the one building, it was a Mellon bank years ago. I remember, when I was a kid, hearing about it getting robbed. After the bank closed, it became a Chinese buffet
WallieB that Ames sign needs to be yours. Slow remove paint . make yor own box and lite it up... Your killing it in 2020 rapid fireing that videos.. Love it!
Ah good old Duquesne, PA. I went to Duquesne University for undergrad and I remember my dad thinking the university was in Duquesne the city. We were all in for a shock when we saw this area. Well, my dad was more in shock. I had told him that Duquesne University was in the city but of course he didn't believe me at that time and thought maybe the campus in downtown was their satellite location. He was utterly confused at first 😂 Good times.
LJS has been closing a lot of locations here in Iowa the past several years. Despite what other people are saying, I'll admit that I've always enjoyed their food, and still do. It's the customer service and restaurant upkeep that has drastically gone downhill lately, which has been making me increasingly hesitant to go back.
Walk down history lane. Before it was Ecard it was a Thrift Drug. Grocery store was a Kroger then a giant eagle ( that moved up the hill in the Kennywood shops) then it turned into a Thrift store. To the far left was first a giant Grant's discount store then Kmart took it over in the late 70's. Closed after kmarts first bankruptcy 2003 I think. Between kmart and the grocery store there was a Towers store had the same type merchandise as a David Weis. Not to get too long winded but Kmart also had a 50,000 sq.ft. fixture warehouse behind the Towers salesfoor. Any time a store needed fixtures/ showcases etc.. the called the warehouse or if a remodel was happening that is where they got what they needed.
The Long John Silvers closed around the end of summer 2019. The Eckerd drug store close approximately 10-15 years ago. And yes Wally, next door used to be Kroger,s and then turned into Giant Eagle, then a red white and blue thrift store. The bank used to be Mellon bank then turned into a Chinese buffet. The old sign across the street used to be a Hills store sign then changed into Amens. Kennwood owens the abandon buildings. I live in the area that’s why I know what I know. Hope this helps.
Just to let you know. The Rite Aid is just up the street from there and The Ames was originally a Hills. Also That was a Krogers then turned into a Giant Eagles. There was also a Kmart there on the other side of Krogers. The building that was by itself was a Mellon Bank the a chinese buffet. I live about a 1/4 mile away from there. Also Long Johns has been there from the beginning along with McDonalds. Ponderosa was where the Taco Bell is now and Rax was where the Masonic Hall is now around the corner.
For awhile in the early 2000s the tenet next to the Eckerd was Red White and Blue Thrift Store. The demolished part of the plaza was a Kmart. The place across the parking lot towards taco bell was a Mellon Bank and then was turned into a chinese restaurant around 98. That family moved into Duquesne and their son was in the same grade as me for the literal 3 days he lasted at school. The other kids were so brutal to him. They called him Jackie Chan and asked him to do karate moves all day long. On the third day he ran out of the lunchroom in tears and I never saw him again.
I have one like tat up the street from me. They rarely if ever stay open late because they claim business stinks. I fear within the next few years, they may close, then again they have been there a long time... If they close, I will have to go to the LJS only farther up the street and missout on my A&W.
If I'm not mistaken the former Eckerd and grocery store were purchased by Kennywood for indoor storage of ride vehicles plus a workshop for all the winter maintenance of ride components.
According to Google maps and street view, the Eckerd wad closed and was a family Dollar in 2007. The other place you looked at that looked as if it was a bank at one time, according to street view, it was actually a China Buffet in 2007. I haven't really been in this area for about 3 years so I decided to look up this area on Google maps. and according to street view, Long John's is now a Popeyes!
That use to be Giant Eagle before it moved up the hill and there was also a Pat Catans anda Kmart that was next to it. That section was torn down about 15 years ago. The Ames is where Roses is and was Hills before that.
That sucks the windows are covered up, takes the fun seeing inside of abandoned buildings after sitting for a period of time. I agree Wallie I don't care for the shoe box look of fast food restaurants as they all look alike. All but one of our McDonald's where I live are remodeled or torn down & rebuilt.
I used to work at the Long John Silver's that was located in Greensburg, Irwin and North Versailles when I was a kid. It's very sad to me to see these stores close because we were all in the same area and had the same supervisor. I wish these stores could have sustained themselves and continued to be profitable
The Eckerd became a Family Dollar before it closed. That was a Krogers, then Giant Eagle before they built the new one. I worked at that LJS in 1984 -1986, and also the Giant Eagle. The A&W was added later. Next to the Krogers was a K Mart , that was torn down. Roses was originally Hills, then Ames. I didn't even realize that sign was still there , lol. Funny story, originally where the Dollar General is there was a Taco Bell, which was torn down years ago. Now they tore down a closed Ponderosa to put up a new Taco Bell. Lol. Sorry this is long, thought you'd like confirmation. ☺
Eckerd we had in Lubbock years ago turned into CVS which I thought Eckerd was sold to CVS. I miss Eckerd Drug Stores but your right probably was least 20 years.
@Dusk Raccoon okay I hadn't known. Yeah one location closed sometime after Eckerd became CVS once CVS built a brand new & bigger store then the former CVS (Eckherd) been vacant for years, one day when I was driving City transit van & had down time I looked inside which as Wallie's videos all empty but was interesting. Another CVS which was a former Ekherd was torn down once CVS bought ajenant (if spelled right) property to build a new CVS a few years ago. Anyhow thank you for the interesting information.
I'm in Houston, and I remember when the Eckerd name just disappeared overnight and became CVS. A lot of the locations that didn't convert to CVS (because they were closed to a CVS already operating) were subleased out to other tenants. A lot of ex-Eckerd locations CVS didn't convert are Advance Auto Parts stores here.
@Dusk Raccoon CVS subleased a lot of former Eckerds that were too close to existing CVS stores to many different tenants, and Advance Auto was a major sub-lessee of them. As for Rite Aid, didn't Walgreens take over the pharmacy departments within some of the stores while the rest of store was operated by Rite Aid? (Kinda like CVS is doing for Target)
@Dusk Raccoon CVS bought Target's pharmacy business and also set up a store-within-a-store concept where CVS sells certain pharmacy items in the store in addition to operating the pharmacy. The deal also included Minute Clinic, which CVS opened up inside Target stores as well.
Christian Gonzales I know just what you are talking about as I’m from Houston it was sad just like you said over night with the name change funny some are still the BIG stores former then cvs evened up keeping some of there big stores lol
I work at McDonald’s and we have a shed just like that one. That is our maintenance shed we have all our maintenance supplies inside of them. It’s padlocked because it probably had very expensive maintenance stuff inside of it and they didn’t want people to steal
Interesting video. Was looking at the google street view in that area. That "bank" looks like it was a Chinese buffet in 2007. Also the Ames sign is yellow appears to say Lamas on it....
Long John Silver was divested by Yum Brands in 2011 so they haven't been the same company for about 9 years. The new company is LJS Partners LLC and it's 80% franchise owned.
The container next to the bank was left over from the crew that put in the steel curtain at Kennywood. In the future, the mon Fayette expressway will run through there.
Only speculation, but that notice on the door from the health department... I wonder if it was forcing them to secure the building (blocking off the windows) due to a health concern (like mold, etc)?
The BP In West View across from Willie’s snowboarding place is gone so if you get out there you should film it I know I am going to try to get out to film that soon
Wild1995 True that even longer now And I never noticed the Ames signs and actually the Eckerd store used to be a family dollar and before that he used to be a Kmart where my mom used to work before it closed
Did you know That roses was the Ames before it was a Ames it was a Hills and also to where that Eckerd was in the back of the parking lot used to be a abandoned Kmart which unfortunately got demolished how do I know this because my mom actually used to live in that area at the apartment complex
What's up man new subscriber. Conneaut lake (prob spelled wrong) was awesome I stayed there this summer for a few days. The park is a little depressing but it could be great again. I lived in irwin for a minute too. There's a recently closed Long John silvers in new Alexandria too. Right next to wendys.
Didn't Kennywood buy the land a few years ago? I think they did because they wanted to expand the park due to the Mon Fayette Expressway which is going to be finished down the road.
We have an abandoned Long John Silvers / A&W, here in Princeton, WV, where I live. It's been empty for about 6 years now, I think. It was in a bad flood zone. It's on Stafford Drive in Princeton, WV if you ever passing through the area, and want to check it out.
pothole like that isn't much. my local arby's in kingston pa has a huge pothol right in the drive thru. and can't miss it either no matter what. this state especially around the northeast part sucks in road maintenance.
Have you ever been back to the Ames/Walmart and various other stores built on that old landfill? I'm very interested in what's happened with that since you videoed there last.
Dude I literally was in Kennywood for holiday lights and I saw that and I really didn’t wanna film it and I do think Waldameer is better than Kennywood also love this video and the New castle Kmart one dude your the best 2 videos a day?!?!! Your crazy I love you and Nate
Hi Wallie That whole area looks rundown and even the amusement park looks bad. Really enjonyour videos Wallie. In my insane life I have going on, your videos keep me going. Stay awesome and keep the videos coming!!! Your Awesome!!!
That's like how people go nuts over cedar point. I liked geauga lake so much better and another we use too go to was idlewild park. That would be a cool summer trip. That's something too see that Ames sign.
It's opened but it's by far the worst McDonalds you can ever go to. No matter how many complaints are made management won't fix anything, they don't care since they make so much money from Kennywood patrons.
I wonder if the other side of the Ames sign is clear and not painted over since it was on the hillside? Might be worth checking out someday if you have on the right gear to go on the hill side Wallie. I know you don't like to take things and that is respectable, but if the other side is plainly Ames. You should take it and restore it since it is getting weathered and going to waste. Save a piece of history. Cuz like someone else said idk if u could get the black paint off of it. It might be worth contacting the owner of the property to see if u could have it for free. If u explain your reasoning for wanting it . Even if you don't light it up you could frame it as Wall art and put little Christmas light things behind it even... Just a thought
Wallie, Long Johns is owned by LJS since 2011. Taco Bell is owned by Yum Brands. A&W is owned by A Great American Brand LLC and IS NOT affiliated with the root beer drink also since 2011. I know this because I used to work at Yum/Pizza Hut IT in 2012 and witnessed the divestiture of LJS and A&W (back then LJS/A&W were treated as 2 brands that could be separate or combined (most commonly combined)). I think LJS and A&W worked out some agreement to keep combined brands together because more often than not, I see more combined LJS/ A&W than I do standalone. And I am in Louiavile, home of LJS and I am always in Lexington, home of A&W and founding home of Long John Slvers.
Theres only one LJS left here. There use to be so many. It's ok though, it always made me sick eating there. Probably the 10lbs of grease in the food🤢.
That was an old giant eagle Kennywood owns that now uses it I've been told as a ware house for freight nights and holiday lights the bank building was on deed a bank I believe it was eqibank then it was a Chinese restaurant and the building behind it Kennywood owns that too. And last but certainly not least the Long John silvers has been closed for vat least now I believe 2 years. The sign for the ames is just a sign the store was a Hills and now it is a roses store.
@@davidapalcseypalcsey7544 You are wrong I live in the Area We've never had a krogers. Eckerd yes. Never Kroger It was a Pat Catans foooorever ago. The building couldn't place was indeed a bank then a Chinese buffet. Long john silvers was just open this past summer not closed for the past 2 years That Ames sign recently got painted over like in the past year it used to be super clear and readable. The Ames I'm pretty sure wasn't where the Roses is I'm pretty sure it was where the beauty supply store ( the building with black and red paint you see)is next to Dollar tree dont Giant eagle has for as far as memory goes been on the top of the hill
@@danyellewashington9087 I never said that s Kroger grocery store was there giant was down there Kmart was on far end big lots in center giant eagle then eckard upabove in other was an old hills store then an Ames store then then closed for awhile then roses moved in. Upabove there was a shop and save where the auto parts store is
That was a Krogers before it became Giant eagle. I worked at the Giant Eagle before they built the new one on top of the hill. Shop N Save was where Dollar Tree was. I was born in 1962 ,grew up and still live near here. Hills became Ames before it was Roses. Eckerds was originally Thrift Drugs. ☺
They just closed ours in South Chicago heights Illonois, I'm surprised they stayed in business that long. Long john Silver company never promoted there brand in Last 10 to 20 yrs. my thought. Good job on videos, love the channel
Hi if you ever come to Illinois go to Stratford Square Mall in Bloomingdale Illinois it has a lot of ascetics and it is dying only anchors left are Burlington and kohls and former anchors are JCPenney Carson’s sears and Macy’s the Macy’s is being demolished for a woodman’s grocery store. If you want to see a video search mall aholic Stratford Square mall Bloomingdale Illinois. This is my local mall that I am telling you about and I am a subscriber and you should visit woodfield mall the biggest mall in Illinois. If you are interested in outdoor malls Oakbrook center and Westfield old orchard are good ones.
The looks of the vent (round) on roof I'm thinking was a restaurant. Yeah once you walked to where was a drive through does look like might've been a bank.
Can confirm..we lived in McKeesport from 1999 to 2014...was apparently a bank before we got there, then was a Chinese restaurant...which eventually closed
@@barrystorms6891 my condolences. Also loved in McKeesport. Originally from NY but found what I thought was an amazing house for cheap. Then I arrived in McKeesport. I had to abort the mission 😁
That Ames sign is awesome wish it wasn’t painted over and I guess that one of those places has to be an Ames I wish I can have that sign but too bad I don’t live up there I live far away from there but had to admit that Ames sign is cool and hopefully it stays there
