Went out and cleared a couple of local drains a few days ago during a flash flood. Armed with wellies, a rake, and hours of watching Post10. It was glorious.
Nature has built a better classroom. Truly a beautiful area. Thanks, Post. Poison ivy doesn’t affect you because it doesn’t want to make you get out your rake! It has seen you in action and doesn’t want your wrath!
Listening to him explain how everything works and what various plants are is what makes these videos so interesting (or at least I think so). I also love how he points out small things like flowers and a bunny and what a spider is doing. It's just so wholesome
I really like that place, I try to imagine how it would look like with restored walks and everything, but the best part of this video was that you are in a wildlife sanctuary, and a small little wild bunny and a beaver in the same video in there, shows that it is working exactly like a sanctuary for wildlife :) Good one!
Even though you're not allergic to poison ivy, you still need to be careful. My mother wasn't sensitive to it, and she over exposed herself to it and became hypersensitive to it for the rest of her life.
Fascinating! Thank you, I’m so intrigued to learn about past landscapes....what it was and how it is now is so very interesting. You are an archaeologist of urban and rural hydrology and I’ve learned a great deal from your videos. Be safe and well.
6:49 Milton Bradley’s Heroquest is the game that started my group of gamers that is still intact after thirty years. Nice to see this MB reference in one of your great videos.
Thanks for posting this park. In Braeside, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia we have a similar park with wetlands a trails to walk and ride. Loved to play there as a kid and is still a good walk/run.
🌻🌿🐾🌱🍅 ☘🌶Glorious... you are a true explorer... thank you so much for sharing the history and structures of this beautiful property. You help us get a nature fix during this pandemic.
You are a true leader. You not only set an Outstanding example of what just one person can do and accomplish you also are a Great educator. You are such a Great role model. Thank you for all you do. Much love. Stay safe out there💗
Post, great job as always. 👍. Here's a suggestion. The house museum where I serve just had some wonderful outdoor improvements done by a young man doing his Eagle Scout project and other work done by a Scout troop. It's a terrible shame about the fire, I hope that firebug did time. Maybe you could do outreach to some scouts (Boys and Girls) about organizing some clean up projects. The scouts earn badges, local business right off their donations for supplies. The town gains an eco-friendly attraction for families. Best of luck with Fay, she walloped us in NJ today.
I hate to see places like this just wasting away. If I had money I would donate all they need to make it happen again. The kids are the ones who suffer.
Post 📫 🏤 🚩 📯 📫 10, the video 📹 is so interesting 🤔 😀 I learned a lot about wildlife and culverts I did not know. Your explanation of how things work are helpful ✨ 🙂 😊 ☺ 😌 👌 👌 keep up the good work.
Thanks for the nature video Post, very interesting. The best time to water the Garden is after the Sun goes down, that goes for grass as well as flower beds. Watering a Lawn during the day will burn the grass and turn any lawn brown.
Be careful of the poison ivy regardless . My grandmother wasn’t allergic to it either but she finally did develop the allergy in her late 80s . She used to pull it up in her yard with her bare hands . She had to use gloves after that.
What a shame such a great teaching facility for kids is gone. Important that they learn about their local flora and fauna, guess it's down to post10 now.
You should restore the abandoned boardwalk. It would be so amusing if you just suddenly sent an email with a video series of you clearing all the brush and reopening the boardwalk.
CrazyChickenDude , and Fay is dumping on us here in Northern Jersey this afternoon, I hope she keeps some for Mr Post 10 ! Plus it seemed like just yesterday when he showed this spot to us a few months back ! It’s really cool to see this place in both summer and winter !
CrazyChickenDude , that’s true and even here in NJ it varies from year to year such as this year, very little snow ❄️ but other times we can get pounded !!
I wish he had told us why the firefighter burned that building. Was that a criminal act on his part or was it a controlled burn by the fire department to get rid of an old and unsafe building. If it was a criminal act, what did they do to the firefighter? I'm very curious about that. I also wish Post would tell us what his day job is. I would like to know what he does to make money because all of this stuff he does with clearing drains is just for the fun of it. I just wish he would tell us if he is married and if so what his wife thinks of all his rambling around. Guess you might say I am just nosey. Well, I enjoy his videos so I will stick around even if he never answers any of these questions but I sure wish he would.
Interesting spot..started when Author Thornton Burgess (he wrote the Peter Cottontail books) gave the original 18 acres to the town. The bldgs destroyed were the original Burgess family homes & bldgs. Apparently local guy - vol firefighter - was also a firebug - he set the House a blaze cause he liked Fire so much. He was 22yrs old. More land was added to the original 18 acres, so now it's so big. Gotta love how this place is described on the Mass website: 'The educational aspect of the property eventually led to creating a sizable nature center. This effort was a continuation of Thornton Burgess' wishes, as he had originally willed his land to the town to use as a nature reserve and for teaching about nature and animals. Unfortunately careful demographics and population studies were not carried out and the center was, for its size and staffing, underutilized.' and thus shut down.
7:21 You should place a wooden stake at a discreet (so no one moves it) place near the edge, to know how much erosion is occurring. When you visit again, you can look for the stake and measure. i.e. Wooden Stake is 2 feet from edge. Next visit, measure and if less than 2 feet, it has eroded so many inches since your last visit.
The fire is a sad story, but it’s strangely peaceful with nature reclaiming the land and abandoned structures (almost magical). It felt like going on a relaxing nature walk, and you provided so much information for us. Seeing the beaver and spider was also awesome! Thank you for sharing this with us, Post 10!
Post, such a beautiful area. A real shame that they don't at least take the kids on a field day out there. Some kids get stuck in the city all their lives. Sure they'd always have nice memories of that place. Suppose no toilet facilities since the volunteer firefighter burnt down the big bldg. Also because of the erosion may make it to dangerous. You know kids. 🙄 Least we can remember those days ourselves. 🪵🦫🦫🪵. Definitely looks like the beavers were awaiting your arrival. Kept their 👁️👁️ on you the entire time. Probably felt relief that you didn't bring your rake. We went to a park for picnics when young. There was a small pond there, used to go check for frogs and turtles. So exciting! 🐸🐢. They even had buffalo and deer. Bring bread to feed both. Just had to be brave enough to feed the snorting, tail slapping (for 🪰) buffalo. They were enormous, then they'd snort and scare us. 😳😭🙄. Bet it is very pretty in the snow, of course slippery? Oh what fun, sliding down the steps! 🏂 Thanks again for the visit, take care.
Fay is on it's way bro. Get ready for some big time culvert and drain clearing! I remember watching the wintertime video you did of this place and I thought ' I wonder what it looks like in the summertime' and lo and behold you posted this. Bravo Post 10. Thanks for sharing another adventure!
WOW, that was a brilliant video. You are so good at making them - could watch and listen to you all day. You are so informative and interesting. How lucky you are to have these beautiful places to explore. Thank you for sharing your adventures - they are FAB :-)
poison ivy is a weird plant. I am not affected by it either,,but Im told anyone can have a reaction to it at any time even if has not bothered them their whole life. Still have to be careful with it.
Post 10, another nice piece of work, we never know why people do what they do but we should look at the good that comes of it ! Hopefully no one was hurt in the course of the arson !? Keep up the good job 👏
I loved this video. The place must have been absolutely beautiful, though it is pretty now, and a great place for youngsters to come and explore nature. I see all your views and am saddened that this country cannot find funds to restore this public park. After this pandemic, people who jobs were lost could be hired by a University and private Millionaires who could fund the restoration. Create a fantastic place for school kids in 2022 to learn about our precious Environment !
Omg, the gnome...my aunt who has moved out west from Mass is so in to that kind of thing. I think the one she follows is Slim Stanley. I don't know how people have time for those things.
Loved seeing the summer look here after seeing the winter look in another video of yours. You do know the beaver(s) were scoping you out, right? I realized in this video that I had never seen a beaver before. Seeing them at 4:40 and 15:50 was really great to see. Thank you Post10.
Deck = Gazeebo River = Stream Laughing Brook or somebody should clean that boardwalk up. Cut the shrubery and rake the boardwalk. Maybe some drain cleaning guy?
My mother’s family was from Pittsfield and where they owned their farm was eventually bought by Westinghouse ! I remember going back to Pittsfield as a kid and it was one of my favorite summer spots back in the day !! BTW this video was very cool and hopefully Fay will dump some H2O on you this very wet Friday here in Northern NJ !!
Hey Post 10!!, I just skipped 6 minutes into the video!!, because I do not want to get DEPRESSED!!! I'm sure 30 years ago it was a nice sanctuary for wildlife!! And a very interesting place for people that were visiting (there)!!!👍👍
That's a meandering river (creek?). It's normal for them to undercut banks on the outside of a curve and deposit material on the inside as a point bar/gravel bar/sand/bar. This is one of many ways water sculpts the landscape.
one thing i like seeing on like nature trails. besides the beauty. is seeing like simple lean-to structures. Something when rain kindof comes along there is bit of a overhang to get you out of the weather. or perhaps just simple bench seat under it to just take bit of a break. Think during winter time, I would want to go there, bring a handsaw and some pruner shears with me and a rake so can just clear and open up that boardwalk path again.
Same with me. I'm even OK around poison oak. Next time you come to PA, you should go to State College and then go check out Shavers Creek. It's an environmental center. It has trails that go out to a lake where you can go boating on it. You could also go up to Seven Mountains and go down into Poe Valley where there is another lake and then Poe Paddy where there is an abandoned railroad tunnel.
It’s a bad year for Ticks! Which means it’s a great year for those not wanting to get ticks. It’s a shame they didn’t rebuild the learning center, since the type of education you can get from a place like that can’t be taught in books. The hands on approach of being out and taking samples is the best. Had a college science class where we went out and took samples from ponds and other areas. Learned a lot from that. Still remember some knuckle head pulling up wild flowers and the prof yelling at him since it was an endangered species. So lesson is don’t just pick flowers you think are pretty or odd unless you know what your picking.
Sad, I went to day camp there as a child and got a good science/ environment education. Later volunteered in high school. I never heard about the fire.
