The ammeter was bypassed because this era of gauge is notorious for getting hot, melting and starting electrical fires under the dash. Bypassing the gauge is pretty common in these trucks.

I find that you do repairs the same way a lot of us do... if it ain't broke, don't fix it! You make good decisions on how you spend your money. I watch your videos for the entertainment AND to see how you fix things. I mean I've never worked on a 80s Dodge W100, but I find it interesting to watch you do the repairs. There are a whole hell of a lot of folks who wish they had your mechanical sense and abilities. Keep up the good work!

At $4800 you shouldn’t have any trouble selling it. $1800 on your dad’s gas pumps is a good deal also, all lit and ready to show.👍🏻

Great video! I just acquired a 78 C200 Prospector, 3/4 ton. I was wondering what to do with the gas tank. Your video gave me a lot of ideas for how to take care of the old gas(which isn’t much) in the plastic tank. I really don’t want to drop the tank, so I’m considering, siphoning it out, adding fresh gas, and changing the filter often, until it runs clear.

19:51 Ford power steering pumps whine when the wrong fluid is put in them. They were designed to use transmission fluid, not power steering fluid. Car owners and Jiffy Lube employees who don't know that put power steering fluid in the pumps when they are low which makes them whine.

" I don't what you could have hit that would bend the pick up tube like that" A car dolly perhaps? Just kiddin'. It's not unusual on a 4x4, especially since this one has no bash plate under the tank. My '86 Ramcharger has a bash plate, sender still got bent. It now has EFI with an in tank pump, I reworked the Aeromotive pump assembly to be spring loaded so hopefully the pump won't get knocked off.

Great video, but hold on a second...lol. I think I know what you were doing when you tested the gauges, but be careful about the terminology. The way that Mopar and most other clusters work is that the cluster is supplied with key on 12 volts, which is stepped down to about half by the IVR...Instrument Voltage Regulator. One side of each gauge not including the ammeter is supplied with IVR voltage. The other side of the temp, oil and fuel gauges is the ground side through the sending units. Each unit is a potentiometer that allows varying amounts of "ground" through, just like a fuel sending unit operates. There is NO power present at any of those sending units. You did in fact test the circuits for continuity, which is good work. As another viewer mentioned, those ammeters are a fire hazard. Mopar foolishly routed ALL the electrical load through those undersized ammeters on all their vehicles into the 80's, so when the lights, wipers, fan motor etc are on, it goes through that ammeter. I've seen them get so hot they melted the lens and the needle fell off. As a mechanic, NEVER assume someone just didn't know what they were doing. I would go back in there and reconnect those wires pronto. There are fusible links in the harness but those are the most durable part of it unfortunately. Last thing, try to avoid saying "honestly" and "to be honest" so much because that gives people the impression you might not always BE honest. Keep up the good work.
@jdpinbaytown
@jdpinbaytown 10 месяцев назад
I thought Chrysler changed the Ammeter wiring after 1973, Maybe they didn't on Trucks, They also didn't wire them that way on models with a lot of electrical accesories and ones for police use.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 10 месяцев назад
@@jdpinbaytown You are correct in that vehicles with high electrical loads and high capacity alternators like the Chrysler 100-amp units and the Leece-Nevilles used a shunt around the BULKHEAD connector, because that's the second most likely spot for a failure, but I have no knowledge if they bypassed the ammeter somehow. I've never seen one of those vehicles in person. I'd like to though to see what they did.

The main power feed on those mopar vehicles are feeding off the back of the ammeter or alternator guage and when they lose connection it won't crank and that was a common hack to bypass it so it would start as it should, but I always wanted my truck to have working guages and start as it was designed course that was not exactly true since under the hood it mounts and the inner fender aprons and the frame had been hacked up, modified, cut out and welded in because the truck had a 66 Plymouth fury or satellite wagon poly 318 in the truck ran great and sounds great...

I have an old Chev mini van that can take a 4x8' sheet of plywood on the floor - actually about 50 of them...try and do that with a modern pick up. I agree a van is more useful unless you want to tow a large load or carry half a ton.

@rambleon2838 10 месяцев назад
Pick ups are more versatile especially if you get into the 3/4 and 1 ton range add 4x4, 4 doors and a flat bed or a service box with a pipe or lumber rack. You can't tow a goose neck trailers, a 5th wheel campers or haul a heavy or bulky load like sand gravel, a pallet of bricks or water with a van. The light service industry in the US is usually using vans. Heavy duty mobile mechanics and utility companies use 1 ton or larger pickups with huge service boxes that may carry a crane, welder and an air compressor to start with.
