I like your methodical approach to repairing and replacing parts on the cars you rebuild. Glad to see you get things done and don't skimp on repairs. Two thumbs up

I am surprised that you did not paint the replacement radiator support before you installed it!!!

I concur. I would have slapped some paint on it...easy enough and cheap. I also would hav drilled drain holes at the bottom since it's easy enough also.

Great video! You know, people put those fans on thinking they're somehow gaining power, when in fact they're losing power. Best is to go to a clutched fan, but if you can go electric, it frees up quite a bit of power over the clutched fan.

This may just be my OCD speaking, but wouldnt it have been a good idea to wire wheel that radiator support cage and rust-treat and paint it so that it doesn't rust up like the old one did? Maybe hit the fan while you were at it?
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 7 лет назад
There is a slippery slope when it comes to putting new and shiny things in a dirty and original engine bay. Soon you'll be removing EVERYTHING to bring it up to the standard that you set with the one new part. I have seen it happen too many times.
@harleyguyinmilw

I was thinking the same thing, even though this isn't a restoration, I would have sanded and painted that used rad. support before putting it in. and I absolutely would not have used some crappy chrome thermostat housing for that matter........... just sayin
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 7 лет назад
It is better than the old T stat housing, all rusted in place with a broken vacuum switch sticking out of the top of it!

BUT, with this being the one major source of rust, maybe coating it with a sealant would have been a good ides even if the other parts are left as is. But, it IS your car, so....jus' sayin'.

Look to see if it's a Rochester or a Carter Quadrajet. Most GM cars use the Rochester, and pick up's and van's used the Carter. They look the same, but have some minor differences. The name is on the middle left side of the carb. A lot of people don't know Carter made the Quadrajet also. There an easy carb to rebuild... you should rebuild it yourself... but then I think all carburetors are easy to rebuild, except the Motorcraft Variable Venturi. That carb need dial indicators to set it up correctly... and there easy for me too.

I love what you do. I really do. That being said I don’t understand why you didn’t take the time to clean the rust off that radiator mount and paint it with a rust inhibiting paint. You had it out and it did have some surface rust. Why wouldn’t you take the extra time and make sure it is fully protected?

I love your videos I think they are awesome I am hooked on them I just wish you would talk about the prices that you paid for your cars and how much the parts cost you thanks great job
@TheCorvetteBen

I guess I can include parts prices, but I don't include prices of the cars (purchase price or sales price) because I don't want that to be the main focus. Too many shows about that already. I want to show the work done and the thrill of bringing something back to life.

There isn't a fan shroud installed. That Corvette will most likely overheat without that extremely important part of a complete cooling system.

I always use distilled water in my antifreeze. It's cheap so there is no reason not to. I also can't fathom why you didn't paint the new radiator bracket before you installed it.

Ever do any corvettes that are manual transmission? Have been really enjoying your channel
@kavinskysmith4094
@kavinskysmith4094 7 лет назад
I got a question, what makes a corvette a keeper in your eyes, as they really come and go on here, and I understand that's quite literally,your business on here, but I gotta wonder what set of options and engine powerplants would make you keep one of these turn around cars like this? as you sold that triple black (I think LS4) C4 that I gave you the video on, which really quite shocked me as it sounded like it was a keeper for you. plus with how many things they did to these things, it would be fun to know what to go for from someone like you, who's had your arm neck deep in all of them at some point or another. plus I must note given your love of the chrome bumper cars I'm heavily surprised you havent tried to add chrome bumpers to the front of the 73, along with the appropriate badges at some point or another.
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 7 лет назад
Well I do still have my73, so there is that. In my eyes what makes a C3 a keeper is the rarity. Keep in mind, most of these cars you see on my channel are small block, automatic coupes. AS for the C4, it was cool, but I ran out of stuff to fix, and I was not driving it as much as I would thought. Figured I would send it on its way and maybe one day later get another.
@kavinskysmith4094
@kavinskysmith4094 7 лет назад
ah so like if you found a Junked ZR1 lying around or something that would be the keeper then, and I gotcha with the other thing, so it just that at this time you wanted more project cars and it was too sorted to be that lol

I have noticed that there is no radiator shroud on this car. Is the shroud essential equipment, or can you do without it? The reason I ask this question is because I have a '75 model with dual electric fans (which I'm not a big "fan" of) and would like to replace them with a stock style clutch fan, but would rather not have to spend the money on a shroud and related parts if I don't have to. I know that many cars can live very well without a shroud, but because of the way the radiator mounts in a C-3 Corvette, I don't know how well it will cool. What say you?
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 7 лет назад
+Roger Lee it really depends on where you live. Hot places like texas yeah a shroud would help alot if you got stuck in traffic at idle for a long time. If your always on the highway, then you could be fine.
@rogerlee3941
@rogerlee3941 7 лет назад
Thanks, that helps. I live in Alabama which is very similar to Texas weather-wise, but most of my driving is open road.
@steves4639
@steves4639 7 лет назад
on my '74, it would do fine idling but get super hot on the hiway. It had the shroud but was missing the chin spoiler. what a difference it made to the car with a new spoiler!

You say you want to make the best job as possible. Good. I don't want to criticize but why didn't you wire brush the radiator support as it was out already, and give it a quick antirust paint coat ? It would have looked as new and future rust protected... Just my two cents.

………..hey Ben, does it really matter if the coolent installed is green or orange? As long as it's 100% coolant and does the same thing does colour really matter? Just asking. :) Mind you, I'd be wanting you to be working on my car because I like your thoroughness and your wanting to go by factory specs. I like that mainly because I like to operate that way. I just like factory direct, best way to go. :) Cheers, Steve
@TheCorvetteBen
@TheCorvetteBen 5 лет назад
Usually a good rule of thumb is go by what is already in the motor. For example, if you mix green and orange together it solidifies and turns to mud.
@deltaman3921
@deltaman3921 5 лет назад
….yeah, but there's no way you're going to mix the two together. Being as thorough as you are you'd make sure that all the old stuff was drained out before you'd put so much as a drop of the new in. I can't see it being blended together. C'mon, 'fess up, you just like the way it was originally, you're just like me. :)

There's an Aussie whose area is electronics. When he comes to a solution to a problem, he says "and Bob's yer Uncle!". Well, my nickname is Bob and I only have a niece and a nephew. I make no claims on being anyone else's Uncle! Oh well, I think the saying is out of favor in Great Britain, so that only leaves the Aussies and New Zealanders to irritate me.
