A video of an old abandoned Routemaster bus on the Isle of Wight.
The AEC Routemaster is a front-engined double-decker bus that was designed by London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC) and Park Royal Vehicles. The first prototype was completed in September 1954 and the last one was delivered in 1968. The layout of the vehicle was traditional for the time, with a half-cab, front-mounted engine and open rear platform, although the coach version was fitted with rear platform doors. Forward entrance vehicles with platform doors were also produced as was a unique front-entrance prototype with the engine mounted transversely at the rear.

The majority of the 2760 Routemasters were scrapped after general withdrawals from 1982. They all can't be saved.

I love the Routemaster. The standard 27' is my favourite. This is sad to know it's heyday has long since passed and now rotting to pieces. Could be ripe for preservation back to it's original LT livery. This one heavily refurbished in the latter part of it's life. RML 2685 new in Aug. '67 at Hanwell garage. Re-engined with Cummins in 1990. Final service 2005.

Very sad to see this, however these buses can take time and a great deal of money. I worked on RMLs in 1973 as a newly made up bus mechanic at Bow garage. We were fortunate that we had the pit facilities, skilled staff and all the spare parts required to keep these running to PSV standard. I will say though that ive seen a number of restored buses in my time, and i'm sure that many of my old colleagues would be astounded at the level of workmanship that has been achieved. Good luck to you one and all.

I remember them at Fairfield Road, before withdrawal, used them a lot on the 8’s, Stagecoach RML’s, these days they are boxes on wheels with no styling, even the new Routemasters are failure, bodywork in a bad way, it was nice to ride them in that condition on the 36’s around Paddington Sussex Gardens, by then, they were in a hell of a state, as the operator knew of their withdrawal.

@@jacksugden8190 Hi Jack, I worked for ' Stagecoach' from 1994, till my resignation in 2004. I was extremely glad to leave, but sorry too. As for the buses, the times were changing, and buses Like our old Routemaster didn't really fit the bill. I do agree that modern vehicles, were not a patch on the old types we knew. The modern types, were certainly here to stay, but unfortunately for us engineers they were not 'mechanic friendly' in anyway. Perhaps we had the good times, when we think back to it. I don't know what many of my old trolleybus workmates would think these days. Many of those blokes are long gone, now and so has all their old knowledge and experience. Shame when I think back. Kind regards.

It's very sad that I see this again as I see our UK Buses goes to places like the Isle of Wight and there's no respect for our vehicles and the transport Government is to blame and its disgusting

Just an old bus to me, the love and romance was long gone, loved them in 1962 on the Green Line service at Brentwood, and in 1967 on the Country Area 339’s, read that the 15 Heritage Route was to loose the class, a sign of the times in the modern age.

Alfie, the above video was filmed on 04/12/2016, but only uploaded this year. It may have been moved for restoration, but it hasn't been sighted on the island since the filming.
