We explore an abandoned school to find out what 7 years of decay look like...
This grand building with its iconic clocktower was established as a grammar school in 1931, it saw 81 years of education before closing it's doors in 2013.
It's original features and design are a memory of what schools were like before modernisation.
There are many reminders of what once was left inside the walls of this school, lets step inside and take a closer look…

I thought it looked familiar!!!! I went to Doncaster Grammar School (before it became Hallcross Comp - spit...). we played rugby against Maltby (and other schools...) I fairly sure the layout of both school was pretty similar. Hallcross is still in use, however.

I am 73 years old and remember going to a school like this in a small town in Virginia, USA. The windows were so tall that a long pole with a hook on the end was used by the teacher to raise the bottom half -- of course there was no air conditioning. The ceilings were very high and heat rises. With the thick walls I never felt hot.

I'm the same age and I went to a school like this in Ontario, Canada. Right at the end 37:30, Jesse pointed out a pole at the top of the stairs that looked like the kind of pole used to open the windows.

I went here from 1978 - 1986, the top left window was my history class. It became an academy around the time they closed off this part of the school. I don't know who is responsible for this building but there was a community backlash when they wanted to demolish this building and have been forced to renovate it. It is currently in the process of this. If you looked at it now you would see it has nice new windows. I have no idea what it is like inside but it is good news that it's being restored.

@@alxgu198 That's a possibility. Way back when we had Home Economics classes where we learned to sew so maybe they were learning to knit but it's odd to use a machine to teach that. I'd assume they'd use knitting needles for that.

In the 1950's there were Secondary schools which were trade orientated, High schools which were for academically brighter kids and were more technology orientated, and Grammar schools for those able to go onto university. Where you went was governed by the 11 plus exam, failed mine and to make matters worse my best friend went to the Grammar school. At that age it really affected many children.
@claireb4259
@claireb4259 3 года назад
Yes, that was a biased system. I didn't do well in examinations as it caused me to panic. I couldn't focus. I failed the 11 plus too and my parents sent me to a private boarding school. Secondary school was out of the question as they wanted me to go university.

@claireb4259
@claireb4259 3 года назад
@@vulgivagu Thank you for asking. My father's work took us to another area with a Comprehensive school which I attended. I got my O and A levels and went on to university. That old system was a perpetuation of the British class system. A motivated child who ended up in Secondary school didn't have a chance at higher education. How did you get on after Secondary school? Were your hopes dashed?
@vulgivagu
@vulgivagu 3 года назад
@@claireb4259 I am afraid that after that I gave up and did not do very well academically. I did become a photographer and later in a director of a furniture company. There is still hope even after a bad start. Amazingly the 11 plus did not end until 2008, I took mine in 1957 which seems to me now to be an awful long time away. Most kids then left school at 15 and 16.

Thanks for showing a great building, just curious to know why you didn’t find the fire/smoke source first…for safety safe. Look forward to the next adventure

Great building! Must have been grand with students running around. I kept thinking I would have been looking out the windows instead of paying attention. This may seem like a "dumb" question but I am curious, did the schools have auditoriums/gyms? In the US most schools have a large room for sports, school concerts, community gatherings. Another cool explore!

@claireb4259 3 года назад
Yes, they do and they are also used for morning assembly. Well they did have assemblies when I went to school. We'd all gather together first thing to hear announcements etc.
