Built in 1891, this 500,000 sq foot warehouse / factory was one of Scranton best places to work. With over 1400 employees, it featured it own barber shop, bowling alley, gym, theater, and lounges for its employees. Scranton Lace manufactured napkin, table cloths, curtains, bed sheets, parachutes, valances, and other patterned fabric. Although only one Nottingham Loom remains, this building had a lot of these that would produce the product for their clients. It was an advanced piece of machinery in it time. Without computers, the machine would read a punch card that had the pattern layout on it. It would learn this pattern from the card and then produce it onto the fabric. Pretty cool for it time. Scranton Lace was one of the largest employment facities in the area. However in the later years, the company went through some financial issues. In 2002, the vice president of the company told all it employees at mid shift that they were closing immediately and to pack up and go home. Today it is privately owned and the building is currently going through clean up to prepare it for condos. Some information from Wikipedia and AbandonedAmerica.org

Thank you, Steve, for your wonderful work documenting the past prosperity of our country. I have ancestral roots in PA (McKean County, Bethlehem, Philly, Scranton and Rush) and have always felt drawn to that part of the US. Your videos give me a better understanding of our history. It is so sad to think that we once were so prosperous and self-sufficient, and now can't even make fabric to cover ourselves, or grow enough food to satisfy everyone. Keep up the good work!

I do enjoy videos like these.I'm glad to see that this place is being revived,but I've seen so many of these monuments of simpler times just being left to ruin and it breaks my heart.Thank you for sharing these videos.

This was of a company and a era when the owners believed in taking care of their employees and community would take care of the company and that mentality in most places died in the early 1980s in America

When Congress raised their taxes for export and import so high it was no longer profitable to stay in business. All mfg left the country. Lowering of those taxes are one of the corrections President Trump made in his 2017 tax act. So hopefully, there are enough capitalists left to resume manufacturing in America

@@lynlynch2168 Most companies left because they could pay their employees much less in foreign markets or a product could be made for significantly less in a foreign market.

Came here after viewing JP Videos explores of the site in 2016 and 2019. You were fortunate to get in there before noticable decay and missing interior items. Apparently, there is now selected demolition on site with hopes of repurposing the some buildings in the complex. Included in the plans are residential, commercial intetests and even a museum. Hope they saved some of the items seen in.your videos (gone by 2016) for the museum. Having the.looms and bowling balls included would be really cool. Thanks for the footage!

I think manufacturing in its self is an interesting process. I use to work building saxaphones for 18yrs and then they took the job out of the country. Before that I worked sewing infant and children clothes for 10 yrs they took them jobs out of the country. In my area in MI most of the jobs you did after graduation was go to work in the factories. Our biggest one GM we lost about 3000 jobs, nothing left but 90 acres of fenced off dirt. They say buy American made, where do you find anything made here? Does anyone know why the Lace Co. shut down? Interesting video I enjoyed it brought back bittersweet memories of places I use to work.
@AbandonedSteve

April Smith That is awesome. Thanks for sharing that. I agree. Not much is made on american soil anymore. It was shut down for money issues.

it's kind of creepy to see machines that ran constantly, for many, many years, are now still and lifeless. as huge as this place is, i don't believe an all day trip, would be enough to see the entire factory. this place is just unbelievable. really nice work.
@AbandonedSteve
@AbandonedSteve 10 лет назад
76southernpride you are correct. There was places we never got a chance to see.

Corporations are the cause of machines and massive buildings being abandoned. The average person is good and would want it re-used, re-cycled or demolished to return the ground back to nature. This is becoming the corporation way though - for a better planet.

Steve, I have the trolley yard and the Scranton on my exterior hard drive. I just have not posted yet. Scranton also had an abandoned school and mansion. Hopefully, you were able to see both of those. Tom

Very well captured. I know I've said it before, but there is just so much atmosphere in your videos. I think it's the extremely wide angle lens and the type of mic you have.
@AbandonedSteve
@AbandonedSteve 10 лет назад
AbandonedExplorationAdventure Thanks Ben. I am filming with my new 14-24mm wide angle lens. I also have a stereo mic that attaches to the hotshoe of my camera. I like the combo as the wide angle as you said gives you a lot more to see.

What a great set of videos. I'm a weaver; seeing those old industrial looms is a treat. I have to wonder; if there are all these abandoned factories being turned into condos...where are those potential condo buyers working? Has there been an economic boom in Scranton?

I think its pretty neat how at they were probably keeping the employees happy with the bowling allies, theater and basketball court. You don't see that anymore. Owners don't care the employee anymore just how little they can get by with pay them and you can forget anything nice after retirement like in the old day. No gold watch, vacation or retirement bonus.
@AbandonedSteve
@AbandonedSteve 10 лет назад
G RJ yea they had a lot of stuff in there for the employees. Obviously at the last day of it being open, all the employees got pretty screwed over

Wonderful video Steve. Did you pre-arrange permission before driving up there? One thing I've been thinking, since I am from your area and still maintain my main home there, but my job moved to Michigan 3 1/2 years ago, is about the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn which I have visited. One thing they do is capture American Industrial history and they even have NEW HOLLAND equipment on display. I bet they might be interested in a video like this! You might wish to contact them...
@AbandonedSteve
@AbandonedSteve 10 лет назад
James Henry Yes, i signed up for a tour here through a photography session. it cost money but was worth it in my opinion. Is that museum in Michigan?
@jameshenry8779
@jameshenry8779 10 лет назад
Abandoned Steve Yes it is in Dearborn, MI. It is gigantic, over 100 acres and it takes at least 2 days to see a decent amount of it. Much of it dedicated to America's industrial history, with locomotives, factory machinery, automobiles, historic buildings moved to the location (such as Thomas Edison's lab) but much more than that, and they DO have digital collections which is why I mentioned it. www.thehenryford.org/
