Abandoned Wal-Mart - Leesburg, VA 

I live in Leesburg VA where this is. Over the Wal-mart that is painted on the building used to be a lighted sign. This building was built in 1993. It was sold January 31, 2020 to MITCO SHENANDOAH II LLC. The reason it was open so long was that the Town of Leesburg Town Council and town government would not let Wal-Mart build a Super Center in town limits. Wal-mart finally bought land just outside town limits and built the Wal-mart Super Center with approval of Loudoun County VA. The new owner was going to rent the building to Floor and Decor a chain of warehouse stores selling tile, wood, laminates, stone and flooring. Then COVID pandemic hit and nothing was done with this store. All the windows used to be papered but it mostly all fell down. People have been dumping on the property and now big cameras on poles are on the property. It is really looks bad because there are still nice businesses and restaurants in the immediate area.

My hometown Walmart lol it’s supposed to be turned into a flooring supply store from my understanding. So many memories in that building. My uncle used to work at this location when it opened back in 1992. This location closed because they built a super center Walmart over by the Leesburg airport.

I left Northern Virginia in 2016. My cousin worked at that very store before she left the area. That little door where you couldn't see anything was to the eye doctor's office -- before the vision center.

That's probably from the early 90s. Wal-Mart hadn't expanded into Northern Virginia before then. EDIT: Yes, 950 Edwards Ferry Rd was built in 1993.

Wow your pretty lucky to find abandoned Walmart’s, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack trying to find these.

Just to let everyone know, there is a guy in Minnesota who is selling an exterior Kmart sign on eBay for $2,300.

Our Walmart looks just like that. When they built the supercenter in the next town over it was closed. Then used by another store. And now empty again. The supercenter was supposed to be built across the street, but a church complained to the town.

I miss the old school Wal*Mart logo. This is something you don't see everyday.

That is a cool find! It is neat that the old Walmart logo stayed on there for as long as it did. In most Walmart stores, you don't see this kind of stuff anymore. This place is full of nostalgia!

Went to this Walmart for years. Early childhood memories are the toys and Legos that were bought from here.

Great find Kayla! I have never seen a tan walmart with a blue sign. I remember dark brown Walmarts that are in plazas with blue signs, they had a long rectangle shaped lobby. The lobby had a bench to sit on, 2-3 arcade machines, claw machine stuffed animals, and the quarter gumballs/toys machines. 80's style building.

Nice find Wallie. We had one of those style WalMarts here in Lockport NY until it moved into a super center location where the Lockport Mall used to be. A few years ago the old WalMart building was sold to Runnings and is now a Runnings store.

There's a former Walmart near me that looks like this (Lima, OH), one of my family members actually helped build it. Relocated to a Supercenter around 2014-2015. There's also the Findlay, OH Walmart which has been remodeled, but they didn't move to a supercenter and the building itself still looks like this.

I remember that Walmart when it was open . Also in leesburg is a former Kmart on market street. The now closed Graydon manor is cool to tour. The main house architecture is really cool .

This particular Walmart moved to a super center across town back in 2019. The plan is to gut it and split it into smaller units.

That is cool you guys found another one of those stores! It brings some nostalgia finding these old Walmart stores. The one in my hometown closed in 2005 to move to a Supercenter and the old building was renovated into a church. Still think to this day it is one of the oddest type of thing to move into the retail space size of a building!

My theory on this building is it's an older Walmart that was added onto to make it a Supercenter. I don't recall any older-style Walmart having a vision center. Back in the day, Walmart was often an anchor store for a shopping center, which is what this one appears to have been. Two things about this one: No evidence of it having a restaurant and there is no Tire & Lube Express. My guess would be that this particular store built a larger building. An increase in sales is a basis for building a larger facility to accommodate growing needs. Hopefully someone who is from the Leesburg area can elaborate.

I know that around 1995 the dash in wal-mart turned into the star in between the Wal and Mart. Probably a 1990's store.

I live near a Walmart that still has the previous logo up but the weird thing is how it was remodeled in 2015. You would think they would change the sign 🤨?

Living in Leesburg and having shopped at this particular store for years, let me tell you, it was straight late 80s/early 90s. The smell, the feel, the leaking roof and tiles with water stains. I swear some of the clothes and merch were from the 90s.

There is an Abandoned Neighborhood Walmart on Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach, VA. Everything around it is still open.

The Walmart in Greensboro North Carolina has speakers outside the building and plays music and is still open . Thanks for sharing

When I worked at a Walmart in Elkton Maryland in 2001 my store had that logo, and yeah I agree I wouldn't risk going in through the door in the garden center.

We had an old 80s Wal-Mart like this in East Dundee, IL that was open up until 2016 or 2017.

The 1st Walmart I ever went to looked like this. In the early 2000s, it closed and became a church. The 1st Walmart in my home area looked identical to this store. They upgraded it to a super center before ultimately closing. The former Walmart down by my office looks identical to this. It became a Malibu Jack.

Omg I can’t believe I found this video. I used to worked in that vision center years ago. That small door was the entrance to the Vision Center.

It looks like this wal mart had a garbage chute type thing up in the air that was the compactor. I have never seen that before.

Leesburg is growing a lot. I lived there from 1980 to 82. Loudon county is the wealthiest county in Virginia.

We used to have an abandoned Walmart that followed that same interior design with the drop ceiling, and same 80s logo that was white but have since been taken over by a locally owned business

I've seen this Walmart location while on US 15 when I have a destination involving the use of US 15 north of Leesburg, Virginia after using VA Routes 7 and 28.

I used to shop there, they had just remodeled to self checkout maybe 2018-19 before moving .Prior to that the had actual cashiers, very old school. That new location on Compass Creek is around the size of Costco maybe larger.

One of the Walmart's in Springfield Illinois still has the front look that the building has. It's still in use as well. Have built on it a couple of times.

We’ve still got one that’s open that looks like that in Tampa, but they changed the logo out front.

Kind of reminds me of what Wal Mart looked like at the West Manchester Mall back in 1993 when Wal Mart opened there which then expanded to a super center in 2003.

Believe it or not we have one exactly like this that’s still open in Rochester NY! But they did update the logo to the newer one. It’s store #1610 in the Elm Ridge Center in Greece.

I’m convinced this store was the last of its kind at the time of its closing. Sure, there are still a handful of non-superstore Walmarts of this style left, but this one I’m fairly certain was the last to have that particular logo.

Here in Roanoke Virginia they moved our Walmart about a mile down the road and made it a super center. That was in 2010 and they put a kohl’s and pet smart in its place a few years later. This is exactly what the old one looked like.

Fairlawn, OH (suburb of Akron) is the one you are referring too. I used to work there. It was going to relocated as a supercentre, yet controversy developed given the land purchased was inside Copley the next town over, so the plans was abandoned, not sure if any developments since then.

This Walmart is now Floor & Decor, and the facade changed and painted gray.

There's an old Wal-Mart in Frederick, MD that is now an "At Home" store off Rt 26. It was closed when the built a super center basically across the main road.

Our old one got turned into Hobby Lobby and Tractor Supply.

In Big Stone Gap Va our Wal-Mart here was the first one ever in Virginia and is now abandoned and they never owned the building, they leased it! The building was redone with the new Wal-Mart logo only to shut down 6 months later! It was the old logo until 2018

A great video, Wallie! I've never been to Walmart in the 1980s. Walmart opened for business here in Weirton,WV in 1995, and that was the first time for me to shop in Walmart. Our first Walmart store was the smaller store and was located on Three Springs Drive across from the old KMart, where the current businesses are presently open for business. Walmart Supercenter opened for business here in Weirton, in 2009. Have a KMartlicious Day! Stay awesome!

It used to have a little cafe in it back in the day, but it was renovated in like 2008, and the cafe area was turned into the bathrooms up front

It's a bit of a bummer that another older model Walmart is defunct. I know that a Walmart like this in California actually had groceries put in years ago when everyone almost was getting them. But this one they made it into a supercenter without changing places or even did anything to expand the structure. I did learn that some had some structure built for the groceries but this one didn't. They only moved the groceries in as considered a full supercenter.

Looks like our old division one store .It was only 89000 square feet . We moved to a Supercenter iin 2003 . Miss that old store !

Medina Ohio Wal-Mart used to look like this back in the 90s. Our parents would take us there shopping quite often then. Remember playing Game Gear and Sega Genesis on display in the electronics dept.

We have an old school Walmart in Aiken South Carolina that instead of rebuilding a super center they added on to one side. The ceilings on the original building are low clearance and the hardline/softlines side of the store. The side they added on the ceilings are higher and are the grocery side.

That's the look of Walmart from my childhood.

If you face the building, behind the block "pushout" is the management office and cash office.

This is the walmart where I live. It was very small because it didn't have a large grocery section, mostly some frozen foods and boxed food. I remember shopping here on its last days.

I worked at the old school Walmart and I loved them better.... it had small grocery area and I was department manager over foods till I went to pharmacy... got to meet Sam Walton and his family and ole’Roy... to me they had so much more and way better merchandise then... I also live in Sam Waltons birthplace...

Walmart tends to stop doing remodels when they're trying to relocate a store. This would be consistent with that, since they'd been trying to relocate that store for a while.
