Olivier Habex NA and NB yes, I’d have an Abarth 124 spider over an ND all day long. Looks better, sounds better and easy to modify if that’s your thing. As for the NC well Nobody likes those so who cares😁😁

Not enough rpm on the 595, it bogged down quite bad! If launched well it would be quicker in this test.

I may be wrong but I believe turbo'd cars benefit from a lower launch (around 3k rpm)!

I would've thought the traction of the FWD with the weight on the drive wheels would've won the day. The 500 missed a shift, but the 124 bettered the advertised time of both cars. 6.67 better than 6.7 & 6.8. and the 7+ second 500 run demonstrates the driver's mistake.

6.67 rounds to 6.7, and the RWD car has better traction on dry tarmac because the weight is transfered to the rear when accelerating. Also I doubt the weight distribution is actually very different. Sure, the 500 probably has a little more over the front than the 124 has over the rear, but probably nowhere near as much as you mught expect

1. The 125 is called 124 in real life. The 125 was a Fiat saloon in the 60s/70s 2. The 124 isn't just a rebadged MX-5. The only share the same platform (which was developed together by Fiat and Mazda). Also the Fiat/Abarth has other brakes (by Brembo), a sport suspension (by Bilstein/Koni), a vintage design (clearly inspired by the old 124 Spider from the 60s/70s/80s) and a 100% italian engine. So please stop talking bullshit you read on some bullshit-pages on Facebook...

One of my neighbours has got one, it sounds like a Spitfire fighter plane. Practically useless for driving around town, though - stop / start, stop / start. The hatchback is far more suitable.

Testing every car on the Top Gear Test Track was an honest race of acceleration and handling. There, you could really test the car. A drag-race is just shit and boring. Just hope that one of them messes up, and you win...

Why did Fiat engineers put the elemental oil filter under the air intake UPSIDE Down ? What a mess. My MX-5 is right where it should be making oil changes very easy especially with a Fumoto oil drain valve.

Well as said in the beginning it all came down to driver skill and the guy in the 595 totally messed the first gear change up .... just compare the theoretical 0-60 and the measured one for both cars... Didnt top gear have enough money to make a second take on this one ? 😂

Hmm given that it was faster off the line run that a few times to avoid driver error and the 595 would win but I presume this was sponsored by the German marketeers of RWD that all Brit journalists love so the result is what they wanted. I also hope TTC was engaged. Standing starts of course are nonsense in the real world anyway

It's obvious they did this race twice with a different spider or using someone elses footage because at 1:01 the Arial shot is of a white spider not a grey one. I've had both cars and the spider hands down is the better car

Of course the Fiat Abarth 124 Spider won, it's partially a Mazda. It was probably more fun to drive too. I wish I could test a Mazda Mx-5 and Fiat Abarth 124 Spider over a weekend. I love the look of both, but the Fiat just looks a little bit cooler.

the 500 was named after the first gen 500, wich had a displacement of 500cc, the abarth was a bigger version of 595cc. No idea how the original fiat 124 got its name, but the name was later replaced by the fiat 2000, wich showed displacement again

I love it. You can have a cheap car that's light and agressive named competitione, performante, stradale or something like that. It's just automotive fun, I miss that with other manufacturers. The 695 biposto is a 'car to own one day' for me.

This is why automatics are superior, they won't "mess up" a shift like a human. If either one of those guys would have had an auto with paddles, they'd have beaten the other hands down no matter what.

Umm, the 595 is at least 100 kg heavier. FWD wouldn't make the car launch better... rwd for that but if they WERE equal hp/weight still the aero of the 595 is worse.
