ABB Robotics - Picking and packing salami snacks

High-speed ABB FlexPicker robots equipped with specially developed
grippers are making sure that Peperami salamis are packaged at the highest
cycle rates at Unilever's plant in Ansbach, Germany.
The robots are fitted with triple grippers which are able to pick up three randomly positioned salami snacks one after the other from a conveyor belt in a one step process, and place them individually in a rollstock machine.
The positioning and location data required comes from an upstream image processing system which is positioned to capture the information on the individual sausages and pass it on to a master computer.
Unilever commissioned ABB Robotics partner, robomotion GmbH from
Stuttgart, to plan and design the fully automated solution; and install
and commission the entire system at Unilever within 10 days. "This
high-speed technology is not only of interest in the foodstuffs sector, as
it can be used anywhere where small items have to be handled at high
speeds" says Andreas Wolf, a director of robomotion.
Unilever's chief engineer, Carim Gad, concludes "With the new system,
we're running the packaging machine at full capacity, giving us a
performance increase of up to 25 percent compared with manual loading. The ability to cover peak loads is of particular interest.
For example, in the run-up to the Football World Cup, special production shifts were operating at the weekend. This alone gave us a competitive edge, enabling us to deliver Peperamis to our customers on schedule".

The most amazing part of this to me is the Peperami salamis are just poured out all over the place and the packing robots have to 'see' where they are.

@MitchMb14 The robots are loading a packaging machine which is working intermittently, not continuously. That´s the reason the robots have to wait today. In order that the robots never has to wait for incoming products we overfill the input conveyor. Our customer saved money this time because he did not need additional regulation for this task. Hope this helps.

Think about all of the jobs that it TOOK to design the robot, along with all of the equipment and the entire machine. And all of the companies it took to make all of the parts that go into everything, and all of the jobs it takes to maintain the equipment. People always look at who the robot is replacing - look the other way around.
@chasl3645
@chasl3645 3 года назад
If those robots wherent able to run 24/7 and replace the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of man hours a year. Along with not having to pay HR and employees for vacation sick leave and all the problems and responsibilities that employers forced to have to shoulder because people are to demanding. Then they wouldn't be used or deemed necessary. The problem is The local C-stor the car wash the grocery store auto parts store the beauty salon barber Shop the restaurants dont have an upwardly mobile clientele to do buisness with. And the higher skilled jobs dont have anyone with work experience to cost effectively run their buisnesses.And it destroys the tax base which isn't available for social programs that are now more neccessary because no jobs are available. So no one can afford anything but beef jerky. Maybe.

I wonder why so many people are worried about robots putting people out of work? This has happened since the start of the agricultural revolution when hunter gatherers were put out of work, or when horses replaced people, or then when tractors replaced more people and horses, etc. Not to mention there are plenty of jobs created for servicing and designing those robots.

You need to consider that the limiting factor might be the machine that is downstream in the line, eg: the sealer maybe uses a cutter that does need the pause in motion. I do think that's the case if you notice at the start of the video how the roll of wrapper film pauses at periodic intervals too.

If it didn't outweigh the costs then they would have never purchased the robots. No question. Unilever is a huge company, with teams of people to figure all that stuff out...they're not making random purchases.
@xEePiiCzZ
@xEePiiCzZ 8 лет назад
+Jordan Maslin Researching a robot like this costs a lot. BUT, it'll pay off. These robots are lightweight and very cost effective. They are faster and cheaper than conventional robotic arms. Research is also worth it if it's implemented on large scale. Also, robots can work almost 24/7 and are more reliable than people. Running a robot the whole day will only cost the electricity, while a human is much more expensive and probably slower. With your logic, GTA V should have never been made because it would be too expensive, but they did get a lot of revenue of it. And they can use the engine/research for newer versions.

@Warhamer116
@Warhamer116 6 лет назад
Probably not the easiest way to do it, but the benefit or robots over linear feeders is that robot is easier and cheaper to program for new product over machining a new linear for the new product- you just need to replace jig where the product is placed and the gripper the robot uses to snatch the object and you can use the same cell to pack just about any product to any package be it sausages, batteries, pills, ammunition, lettuce or anything else.

@ABBRobotics nice machine does ABB make a MAP machine for jerky that wont break the bank? I have looked into theremoforming rollstock machines (which produces a nice package and I could use it in a wide range of applications (jerky and vacuum sealed custom meats))the problem.... in my mind..... a high mill plastic is used for jerky to prevent puncture but the heated seal is very difficult to open. So for jerky a zipper to MAP bag is more customer friendly but the machine has fewer applications.

@ta8077
@ta8077 8 лет назад
+Dan Royer The packaging line which presents the cavities operates intermitently because it is performing processes upstream and downstream which you don't see in the video. Whilst 'stopped', the packaging line forms the cavities upstream (prior to salami loading), whilst downstream (after salami loading) a top layer of film is overlaid and vacuum sealed, followed by cutting laterally and longitudinally to create an individual (or multi tear-off) package. The plastic film needs to be held stationary for 4-5 seconds, so that the dies on the packaging machine (forming, vacuum sealing, cutting) can open/close to carry out the necessary process steps.
