ABBA in the Ted Gärdestad Movie

In 2018, a movie was made all about Ted Gärdestad's life, and despite the fact that I hardly knew any Swedish when I first watched the movie (I still hardly know Swedish, but I've been doing Duolingo now for over a year, so I know some things), I found it to be a pretty nice tribute to the singer. Of course, it has its flaws, one of them being the fact that they have the same late 20s/early 30s actor playing Ted throughout his entire career, including when he was just starting out in the music business as a TEENAGER, and also surely there were some over-dramatized scenes that probably weren't all that accurate.
Of course, seeing as ABBA played a big part in Ted's early music career - Björn and Benny were involved with the production, and Agnetha and Frida amongst other artists sang backing vocals on many of Ted's songs, the members do show up in the movie. I'm a very picky person when it comes to people trying to play ABBA, be it in tribute bands or films, and the majority of the time, no one ever does a good job getting people who even resemble ABBA. Usually, they just slap bad-looking wigs on them and call it a day. Honestly, while the acting choices weren't perfect, I think they did a decent job, HOWEVER, they seemed to ignore the fact that ABBA's looks changed a ton throughout the early/late 70s, and as a result, you get ABBA in their 1971 look about to go on tour in 1977. So for funsies, I decided to compile all of ABBA's scenes and while I was at it, compare how they look in the movie to how they were supposed to look in the actual year.
Anyways, let me know what you think of this video. I made it almost two years ago and never got the chance to upload it, and honestly, it was fun to do. Hey, maybe someday I'll do a video like this with that terrible, stupid documentary ITV produced a few years ago which makes this movie look perfect hahaha.
No copyright infringement intended of course. I do not own the audio or video footage.

Some historical inaccuracy that by 1976 Frida wore her hair either long and straight parted or in bangs

Thanks for this. Benny & Bjon played a big part in Ted's early success and together with Agnetha and Frida contibuted a lot to his early Polar success. It always seemed to me as ABBA gained popularlity and had their own music and promotion to do they had less time for Teds career, and the same with other polar acts like Lena Andersson and Svenne & Lotta. I think its easy to forget the ABBA boys were initially employed by Stig as Polars in-house producers. There arent many scenes with 'ABBA' represented in the music simply because its Teds story, and what a tragic end. Nice to see Stig, Gorel, and Michael Tretow represented as part of the story. If I recall correctly Ted died in 1997 and Agnetha along with Janne Schaffer, Michael B Tretow, and Barbro 'Lill-Babs' Svensson were among the mourners at his funeral. I think as an artists, Ted was sadly unappreciated and remains pretty unknown outside Scandinavia despite doing Eurovision a few times. In 1979 he had his own spot on the 'ABBA in Switzerland' TV special (as did Kate Bush and Roxy Music) when it was broadcast in Scandinavia.

Well, the reality is that the only reason ABBA even exists to begin with is due to Ted.
@123billydog
@123billydog 2 года назад
@@treetoon_ can you explain that please. Its my understanding the ABBA couples were already formed and they'd been working together on and off since 1969 on various tracks. By 1972 the first ABBA records were made.

@@123billydog Sure thing, Ted began producing his music in Polar Studios around September of 1971. Prior to this there were no plans from the part of the foursome to actually form a group, nor were there any intentions to even produce pop music. Ted wanted to produce pop, so Benny, Björn and Stikkan called in Agnetha and Anni-Frid and a few others like Ola Brunkert and Janne Schaffer. After roughly 6 months of production on Ted's debut album Undringar and after his success with the song Jag Vill Ha En Egen Måne, Björn began considering pop, especially after Ted had suggested they should form a group. For whatever reason this had not crossed their mind at all. So they decided to try to make one pop song, which became People Need Love in March 1972.

I believe"The Abba story" was bound to happen one way or another.Twas inevitable.As if it was a cosmic meeting and co-existence.Besides B+B-as they've said,decided to quit folk and start pop music since they've heard The Beatles.In their "Abba-in their own words" book i've read they also had in mind The Mammas and Pappas as an "image influence" for a start, as a 4some.Thank God things finally rolled they way they did.A gift to modern musicfrom Swedish "outsiders".

Yes it's on STAN streaming now however it seems mostly only the Swedish script is subtitled and the English is not (this seems to be a quirk particular to Nordic TV and film, not helpful if the viewers first language is not English or they have hearing issues, etc, but one day they will subtitle the whole thing).
