This, in my opinion, is the magic of youtube - having access to wonderful moments like this that would otherwise not be accessible to humble everyday people like me.. Thank you!
They had a big hit with Does Your Mother Know with Bjorn doing the lead. They used to sing more leads in the first few years of the group. They always did backup vocals on the albums.
When they really want to, Abba can cover all genres. To think that Abba knew opera, classical before pop with all the range necessary, it is no wonder popular bands feel constrained doing only their song. This is a very generous sharing of abilities wonderful to see and hear.
I just realized something: Olivia has a nice voice, but what made her a star is the quality of her musicianship and the way she often approached a song. Pretty cool!
2:49 Frida: "I don't know many songs, just a few" 2:50 Frida looks to Benny...C'mon Benny, do something!!! help me find an opera song!!!! 3:01 Frida glances Benny, she is relief she knows what to sing 3:06 Frida rescuing Lyrics from her memory's database 3:40 Frida shows a mezzo-soprano unique glamurous and SO POWERFUL!!! voice Bobby Fisher: Frida, I have a genuine feeling of Love on you...HOW GOD I LOVE YOU!!!!
honestly this sounded more like benny wanting to embarrass frida by saying that she had been practicing all week long for this. she sounded genuinely hurt when she said "that's not fair"
Thanks for putting this up. So cool! They all seem like such sweet people, especially Andy Gibb, with that soft-spoken way of his. Frida sounds like a legit opera singer.
The only Abba song sang by Benny is "Suzy hang around" you should check it ! :") And also about girls' vocal range - check their preparings to the show in "Abba. The Movie"!
I remember seeing Abba in Chicago in 1979 and watching this show when it aired. I'm eternally grateful to have lived the seventies!! My God Abba and The Bee Gees and Olivia were and are the BEST!!!
ABBA, Andy Gibb, and Olivia Newton John did a wonderful job singing Help Me Rhonda (originally sung by The Beach Boys). Feel like dancing in the 1960s and 1970s in the family.
This is music heaven. My favorite groups were the Beach Boys, ABBA and the Bee Gees - all represented here! Olivia/Sandy and Grease was one of my favorite movies. Thanks RU-vid.
This is like meeting these talented people round the campfire. It's enchanting. Abba are a tiny bit nervous because they are so used to singing in English, not conversing in it. But everyone enjoys themselves: no rude or blockhead of a tv host or interviewer sapping the fun and gentleness from proceedings here, thank God!
Anni- Frid (Frida) is stunning in this video and she has a wonderful sense of humor as well! Her opera training stands out along with her beauty! Agnetha is ever the ravishing blonde with an amazing sense of life direction that she ultimately chose to follow, despite the fame from being one of the world's most incredible quartets!
Notice how polite and restrained the audience is, no-one getting out of order or interrupting, just listening probably in awe at these mega stars actually just being themselves and clearly at ease - aside from Frida's 'solo'were she does feel a little discomfort but shouldn't. You just couldn't have this kind of set up these days, absolute golden times and I feel lucky to have been a child of the 70s
Real beautiful voices... live music... no lipsing... on TV in the 1970's !??! WOW!!! Even today in 2017 it's still impossible to ask for live performance (not lipsing) on TV
Incredible that I didn't even know about Andy Gibb until now. So nice to see Olivia, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid in opera mode, awesome lovexxxx
A lot of great talent here. I love the Beach Boys, and seeing their music performed by ABBA, Olivia, and Andy is a treat. Thank you for sharing this with us. George Vreeland Hill
They did a lot of covers in their solo albums. Only chek Frida's Ensam (Swedish covers of David Bowie, 10CC etc.)and Agnetha's My Colouring Book (covers of 60s tunes). Believe me, Frida did enormous vocal work on that album !
"And then in '71 ..." says Olivia NJ, in 1978, referring to the beginning of her career 7 years previously. It's just the way she says it in abbreviated form. Time keeps ticking, and ticking very fast. I know: '71 in 1978 was so close. I think, with this piece of tv history, you relive the 70s. The way ONJ says '71 makes you feel you are actually there. You get a taste of the 70s through the conversation. That's heartwarming. Very much so!
This was fun! Just goofy fun jammin' on the spot. A lot of people I know hate the Beach Boys and think all they did was sing about surfing, but musically speaking they had some really catchy tunes (as well as many songs about other topics besides surfing). This special was just real and that's what makes it rock!
Wow, it really was a completely different era, wasn't it? I love this grouping! It's a bit surprising how shy and awkward they seem here... these were amongst the biggest stars in the world! Well, poor Andy Gibb would've been had he lived longer, but ABBA & ONJ definitely were. Such is the allure of nostalgia, folks! 😀
Sometimes I feel like Andy Gibb, ABBA, and Olivia Newton-John all had something special with each other. They’ve been around each other a lot. Like UNICEF and the ABC Television special with just them again. I love them together.
***** The general populace in the 70's were so much nicer looking than today. Few fat people, tattoos only on vets & circus freaks,no steroids or growth hormones in meat and neat dressing was more common.
vanillaexplosion99 From what i've seen in images, movies and TV shows from that era i'd have to agree, i was born in 79 but i've been drawn to that decade since i can remember, all the way to the early 80's, there was so much beauty and style back then, and Olivia's beauty was like unparalleled at the time.
+vanillaexplosion99 Fully concur, even if i was too young in the 70's to realize that, but it's more or less the same for the 80's when i was a teen. Especially about fatness: Actually the ones who were fat, were either "professional eaters" or fat because of medical reasons. But what i miss most is that life was so uncomplicated then compared to nowadays, less information, less technology, less expectations, MORE FUN !
IT is so hard to put into words how much would I have given to be there, with such superstars, and that is the least bit of everything...The memories from hearing Olivia, Andy, and Abba are just so precious that that happens to be the true treasure that I carry with me. Is there anything else to say....Maybe the musicians, in all their fame and madness, never realize how they change lives, help you forget your problems, make u fall in love with their music. I could go on and on....
How great is this! An informal, playful jam. Thanks so much for posting this. How terribly sad that Bjorn probably remember this, or much else, from then.
Andy Gibb... I think my crush has never gone away, for such a beautiful soul, and Olivia Newton John, I remember as a kid, in Xanadu, I was in awe and of her, I just wanted to be her, getting around on roller skates 🥰 and who didn’t love ABBA?!!! All of these people, were so influential, growing up. I was devastated, when Andy passed. I don’t know any person, who wasn’t 😔 O.N.J, just had SO MUCH innocence about her♥️🥰 #love #classics #wishicouldrewindtime x
What a reunion! I like how they just sit there and talk and sing and laugh naturally, apparently without scripts or pressure to do anything special just for the ratings. Now that's something I'd like to see more often.
Isabel Galvez very But at least he did make a few good/ great songs and videos like this will mean he will be rediscovered by people who weren’t aware of him...
