Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another ABBA reaction made possible via PATREON with RING RING. ABBA brings out the ammo on this track, catchy melodies, benny slaying keys, Ana and Frida looking fabulous, and those sounds obliterated. A highlight thus far from their self titled album. The sax in a song like this reminds me of a typical swedish phenomenom called Dansband and that style of music make me cringe. The sax free version? Yes, please! ABBA are flirting with all kinds of music and, unfortunately enough, they occationally bump into the slick and cheezy.

@@flugsven What?? I adore the sax. It's not a dansband sounding instrument at all. It's JAZZY, like all the greats! Makes me think of Benny Goodman and sing sing sing (it's got everything from trumpet, to sax, to clarinet)

ABBA is great, my mother who grew up to ABBA forever a loyal fan made sure that i grew up to their music. Great story, 1980 when my mom was 13. ABBA released a competition for their fans in Sweden. (Whoever collected the most pictures, flyers, from newspapers and other sources of ABBA during the whole summer of 1980, could choose anyone from the ABBA team to spend a whole day with). And guess what, Frida was the one she looked up to more than anything in the world. Believe it or not, my mom collected around 2300 pictures etc during that summer and won the contest by miles, which really wasnt an easy task back then.. Just a few years ago i watched some video footage with my grandmother who recorded parts of that day. And there really is some beautiful stuff in it from Frida.. She literally was the one who conviced my moms to follow her dream of becoming a famous ballerina in Sweden, which she eventually fulfilled. Great vid btw, genuine reaction i love it!

Michael B. Tretow was a genius. I have read that he suffered a stroke in 2001 and he has lost his speech and his memory for a long time. That's really sad.

Thank you for do "Ring Ring", when ABBA wasn't called this I remember that in my young time (I'm 63 years) there was no cell phone (or internet) and not everyone had a phone and when I was dating my parents protested because I hung up on the phone to talk to my girlfriend or was waiting for her call and did not want them to use it and occupy it what times those hahaha "Ring ring" was composed to go to Eurovision 1973 but it was third in the Swedish preselection there they went with Agnetha with a very advanced first pregnancy (at eight mounths, seen in some photos) "Ring Ring" is the third single of the future ABBA (at these time called theirself as 'Björn & Benny; Agnetha & Frida') This Official video is from 1974, after the triumph with "Waterloo" and the costumes they wear are superheroes (You see these costumes when did a reaction to "Honey honey" in TV perfomances) ABBA remixed the original and applied the 'wall of sound' technique to it first time ABBA decided to release it again in 1974 as the next single in the UK after "Waterloo", but it barely reached #32 For me it is a very good song and it had its success a little beyond Sweden in 1973 and another countries of Europe It is glam rock style, such as the following, not in its chronology but in the Swedish preselection for Eurovision: the glorious and iconic "Waterloo" I wish You a great day My best regards to You see you in the next GOD bless You!

Yay Dereck you're getting it. The Ring Ring promo was filmed in 1974 at exactly the same time as Waterloo. Ring Ring had been released in the UK in October 73 but didnt chart although it did well in some European countries and was a huge hit in Scandinavia. It was re-released as the follow-up to Waterloo in the UK but with virtually no promotion, failed after hitting Number 32. the saxophone was added to the remix of Ring Ring but isnt on the original version which is faster in tempo. Ring Ring was recorded in English, Swedish, German and Spanish. Please review 'Gonna Sing You My Lovesong' and 'He Is Your Brother' soon.

It's still beyond me how on earth they could possibly lose the Eurovision nationals with this rock-n-roll banger. It screams HIT HIT HIT. (to be fair, the public vote was in their favor, it was the jury who put them third (facepalm) ). And, by the way, the Spanish version of Ring is HOT!

National judges used to be very conservative. When a new sound hit the scene they wers always super scared about it. If this made it through to Eurovision I feel like it could have won, but then we might not have had waterloo!

I had actually checked them out cuz I was curious haha those were the years of good music in general, even the short lived radio hits were kind of cute and mostly melodic or dancy. But ABBA's Ring Ring was a galaxy away from the selected song, in my personal opinion, as far as the hit potential and energy. But I do agree the winning national song was quite lovely, I enjoyed it.

@@VasiliyKomendant Yeah, I’m also pretty convinced ABBA would have experienced an earlier breakthrough, had they been able to bring this song to Europe’s attention, although I feel that in their development it would have perhaps been a bit too early, so I think ‘the gods’ just had a different plan for them. By the way, in my home country of the Netherlands Ring Ring already made it to the top 5, which is almost unbelievable for a song that hasn’t even won the national contest of a different country, so the writing was already on the wall!

And I do totally agree with you, it all happened at the exactly right moment, when its was supposed to. It just still surprises me how short sighted the jury and some other skeptics were at the time :)

I had this YT video playing with the captions on, and around 3.50 and 7.00 where Dereck says "Bjorn is also glammed up", both times the caption said "the urine is also glammed up" .. LOL ! 😂

Yes, this translation programme is really funny. There are often such errors in almost all videos with subtitles. But for deaf people it could be irritating as they not hear what is really said. :-/

You haven't done the official clip of Bang A Boomerang. There are quite a few versions of Ring Ring. A more rocky version was done to suit the American market as was the additional brass. The album cut is more tepid.

Derek, I just recently found your channel and love it!! You have to do Man In the Middle and Dum Dum Diddle!! As many people have already said, this song was their Swedish qualifier for 1973 Eurovision. Agnetha was VERY pregnant with Linda at the time and they even had a back up singer to sing with Frida if she went into labour. She didn't and was able to perform, but they came in third. 1974 they came back with Waterloo and a music legend was born!!

Hi, Dereck! Oh no, you reacted to the remixed version. You simply. MUST do the album version from 1973 in SWEDISH. That's the original. It's soooo much better. This version here is a remixed version for the U.S. market.

I love these earlier songs as they have a kind of childlike innocence to them. The videos to them also give off an air of simplistic yet charming ambiance to them. The wardrobe is bang on for the time this song was made, coming out of the, 'Glam Rock', era, and the small nuances of certain actions of the 2 girls is so endearing. (The circular motions with their hands emulating the action of ringing a number on a dial phone, in particular.) You can't help but grin from ear to ear listening to this song. How this was never a major hit is baffling, although at the time they weren't a household name having not yet entered or won the Eurovision Song Contest, that would happen a year later. How this song wasn't the one to do it will always remain a mystery as it has all the qualities of, 'Waterloo', written all over it. Have you done, 'Nina, Pretty Ballerina', yet?

This is ABBA's first try at Eurovision. There is this series called Melodifestivalen and their they presented this song "Ring Ring Ring". And since Eurovision allows 6 people on stage, so they have the extras as part of ABBA. By the way the song didn't win even in Melodifestivalen and came third and Sweden sent in the winner Malta with the song "Sommaren som aldrig säger nej". By the way the song Ring Ring was in Swedish and called "Ring Ring (Bara Du Slog En Signal)". The very talented Neil Sedaka wrote the English version you put

Hey Derek. This was their very first great hit. It appeared in 1972, two years before Waterloo; but they were'nt chosen to represent Sweden at the Eurofestival. It was composed in a time when the phone was still hanging on the wall and by the way this tune is also my ringtone in my phone nowadays. Please note that I only have ABBA music in my phone. All of it: their entire discography.

this is the remix version from 1974. the waterloo album in the USA had a separate remix of the song. the original english version of the song had different vocals. they also recorded the song in spanish and in german languages.

This version of Ring Ring is a remix of the original version from 1973, and it was done after their Eurovision victory with Waterloo in 1974. The original version of Ring Ring is quite similar but without the sax, and it has a slightly different mix of the vocals. It was performed the first time at the national pre-contest for Eurovision (Melodifestivalen) in 1973, but ABBA only came 3rd and thus didn't qualify, but it became a substantial hit in Scandinavia. There is a wonderful video from 1973 filmed outside the Danish Broadcasting Company building in Copenhagen. 7:14 I hate to be that guy again, but it wasn't Janne Schaffer and Ola Brunkert on guitar and drums here. It was Lasse Wellander on guitar and (I belive) Roger Palm hiding there behind Agnethas hips. The bass player wasn't the usual Rutger Gunnarson either btw. I can't recognize him. He looks a little like fretless bass player Stefan Brolund. But it might also be Mike Watson from England (that sometimes played for them when Rutger was busy with other engagements).

Love the video but love the tighter arrangement of this song that came out after this version, I think it first appeared on Greatest Hits volume 1 but I might be wrong. Love them miming dialing a ROTARY PHONE, yes that song is THAT OLD!! And so am I. LMAO.

The contrast in the girls' outfits is amazing on this one - Frida's is gorgeous and Anna's looks like something her mom made for a school talent show. (And yet she looks gorgeous obv.) This is a less known song - it wasn't a hit in the UK and it's not on the Abba Gold album, but it's still so cute and full of pizzazz. Plus we get to see the band, and the drum break is neat. (I'm not too keen on the sax they added to the chorus though.)

Another great songs from this album are "Love isn't easy (but it sure is hard enough)", "He is your brother", "Disillusion" (only song not written by Benny/Bjorn but by Agnetha) - may also listen to Agnetha's swedish version of this song "Mina Ogon" (My eyes) (different arrangements) and maybe "Santa Rosa" (sounds like hommage to late 60s).

Ahhhh the FIRST , world release song as ABBA and what a song ,full on pop and dance ,exhilarating, beautiful costumes a feast for the eyes ears heart and mind .Dereck you stand on a calm serene beach looking to sea, and with THIS song in 1973,the ABBA tsunami was on the horizon and would change the landscape FOREVER ,they would overwhelm the world and drag us back into the ABBA SEA and immerse us in their beauty and love and we would see and experience such joy and ecstacy as we have NEVER felt before ,and with this our better angels of our nature would possess us and radiate out of us to all we meet and care about and be lifted to new heights of existence. I am from the uk and is only fairly recently i found out how popular Abba are worldwide and not just in europe and how very nice Agnetha is .I am old enough to remem ber watching the eurovision song contest in 1974 i think it was when i was a child.

They hired Neil Sedaka, America composer and singer with hits in the 50s and 60s to translate to English lyrics. It did not make it to Eurovision 1973 but I love it. One of my favorites. Glad you love it. ❤

You should really listen to the Swedish version of this song. It was their entry in the 1973 Melodifestivalen. It's hard to believe that it didn't won, but it was probably fate. If they had won, they might not have won the next year with Waterloo. And that might have changed the whole course of their career. 🎶🎵

Ring Ring is ABBAs entry to represent Sweden in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest and failed to be selected to represent Sweden. They entered again the following year and were selected to represent Sweden and won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 with Waterloo.

ring ring and waterloo videos were not filmed at the same time. the songs are from different albums and different years. that was just the style and glam look they went for back then. after the 3rd album they were not as glam looking.. good early rockiish glam song is taken from waterloo called KING KONG SONG (unofficial video) this song has agnetha screaming in the song twice. thats worth a listen!. the song was originally titled MR. SEX. it got some airplay in sweden but no other place. this song is not a masterpiece but a fun uptempo rocker track from their album waterloo. check it out. thanks dereck

With Ring Ring they wanted to take part at the ESC in 1973 but they only reached rank 3 in the preliminary decision so they tried again in 1974 with Waterloo. What came next is music history. I like the album version more than this version in the official video. Without the saxophones it’s better in my opinion and I think the album version is also a little bit faster. Now there is still one song with an official video left: Bang-A-Boomerang. React to it and you will get in a good mood immediately. :-D
