RIP Abbey Simon
American pianist Abbey Simon in a 1966 Tokyo concert performance of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto No.3 with the Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Akeo Watanabe.
Simon was a pupil of David Saperton and Josef Hofmann, additionally having lessons with Leopold Godowsky and Harold Bauer, and would go on to win the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1940. While having an international performing career, he was also very active as a teacher.
This performance finds Simon playing one of his signature works with great gusto, with a full-bodied sonority, forged phrasing, and wonderful timing.

A phenomenal pianist who didn't get the public recognition he deserved!

Such an amazing recording. This is by far the clearest I’ve heard and it’s surprising the recording technology they had in 1966. The piano is so clear and beautiful. My favorite interpretation thus far. Thank you abbey for this amazing gift and glimpse into your world of music.

Thank you so much for finding this thrilling performance!! I'm so honored to have been able to call Mr. Simon my teacher and friend. R.I.P.

Abbey had a very fine performing career and taught all his life. Wonderful pianist. His Vox recordings of Chopin are really terrific. Just imagine being in school with Shura Cherkassky, Jorge Bolet, Ruth Slenczynska, Eleanor Sokoloff, and Samuel Barber at Curtis in the 30s. He had an extrordinary ear and could play most anything very quickly. There is a great biography published a few years ago on Abbey. It's a great read.

The first time I listened to Simon was in a recording of the Brahms Paganini Variations. I was a teenager and kind of expected an etude-like virtuoso performance, but what I heard was just powerful music. What a loss...

That was wonderfully done, thanks Mark. It’s with this kind of performances the revised cadenza makes sense to me. People have been telling me since I was in my teens I should listen to Simon. Never have.

My favorite version ever! Ashkenazy is a little bit too slow for me.

Nice performance by Abbey on this Rach 3. On a side note Abbey lived just 21 days short of his 100th birthday.

Was Abbey the last of that lineage to go? Perhaps only Ruth Slencynskya remains now.

Indeed, Ruth may be the last one ...

It has been a while since I talked with Ruth, but she is still doing well far as I know. I hated to hear of Simon's passing. He was a gifted pianist.

@@MrClassicalMusic1 I met Ruth by chance - the first and only time so far - after a Benjamin Grosvenor concert in San Jose in March, and we had a really lovely chat. She seemed to be doing great, and a friend of mine had lunch with her recently. A shame about Simon's passing too. I'd planned to celebrate his centenary instead of his departure...

Oh I’m so sad to learn of his passing. I had so hoped he’d make it to 100. Phenomenal musician and pianist. May he rest in peace
