There's no mistaking our "Sunday Morning" theme music, no matter how many different ways it's been played over the years. Nancy Giles tells the story of how 18th century German composer Gottfried Reiche's "Abblasen" became our signature opening tune, and talks with musician Wynton Marsalis, whose recording has been trumpeting the start of our show every week for almost 15 years. (Originally broadcast on January 27, 2019.)

Marsalis is one of the most well-rounded musicians that I'm aware of.

The way Marsalis plays it, it's much smoother and slower, versus the original one where it was not too bad, but sped up a little. Even so, there's nothing that matters more than hearing that trumpet play that song, every Sunday Morning. It almost feels like the sun is waking up with you, to watch the show through your windows.

He is an amazing human being. To be such a superb classical trumpeter truly sets him apart- in that regard alone he is deeply respected. Such crisp perfection! But to at the same time to set that style of music to one side, take off the tux, put his axe in his gig bag and play jazz, which is completely different? Nothing but talent, hard work and humility at play. He has always impressed me not only with his level of musicianship, but with his most thoughtful approach and hard work to everything he puts his hands ( and chops!) to. Nice video. Loved it.

I love the music, and am only familiar with the version as played by Wynton Marsalis as recorded for CBS Sunday Morning! I'd love to have a clip as a ringtone.

Here is the piece played on the original, no-valves natural trumpet by Don Smithers. It was composed by J. S. Bach's trumpeter, Gottfried Reiche, and is depicted in the portrait of Reiche from 1727 by Elias Gottlob Haussmann, who also painted the only authenticated portraits of Bach. The painting is the only source we have for this fanfare. The original, natural trumpet is a much more majestic instrument than the modern "piccolo" trumpet, as it is twice the length and plays only the natural harmonic series, as did all trumpets up to the time of Beethoven and Schubert in the 1820s. That is why the piece lies so high in pitch: it is only in the high range that the harmonics lie ctaves and fifths. This is the fanfare played as the composer intended: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-483AdTgZP14.html

One of my early childhood memories is of my dad watching the Sunday Morning show and hearing that music. That and the theme for NBC’s “Meet the Press”. Also, impressive sun logo rendition by Takashi Murakami at 3:17.

The internet is very much home to the "Weird Al effect"... One moment you're minding your own business googling about some random music/showbiz trivia, you click on a video not thinking much and BAM! His face is staring right at you.

Interesting how Wynton talking about the same thing Doc Severinsen did; intonation (playing in tune) piccolo trumpets are very difficult to play in tune. I guess great minds think alike, as apparently do great players! Also, how much Wynton is looking more like his father Ellis all the time. Love and respect

Not only is he a phenomenal trumpet player, he is also honest. 1:56 "I feel like I'm outta tune on some a da notes." He is indeed out of tune on a lotta notes. I cringe when I have to listen to that on Sunday Mornings. Here is what it sounds like when played in tune: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0ziwwRhqgqk.html. Marsalis is such a phenomenal player; I wonder why they let him embarrass himself by using that awful, out of tune, recording?
