How do Asian men in the West respond to statistics suggesting they're "less desirable" when online dating? Being biracial (Chinese and white) how should I navigate the phenomenon of “yellow fever”?
In this episode I chat to Brian, an American Chinese guy, about interracial dating and how our views have shifted since moving to Shanghai. We discuss Wong Fu Productions’ 2006 Yellow Fever video, and Brian shares how he and ABC friends have navigated dating in the US and China.

Why is it called "yellow fever" when it takes two to tango, why not call it "white fever" as these Chinese women are so eager to date white men?

White fever makes more sense as it's the woman that ultimately decides if the relationship happens or not, not the man.

Yay! She's back! :D Good video! In the next chapter of the series should we expect a full roundtable talk? Heheh. SJ: "So I posted this in a reddit thread called Asian Masculinity..." Me: [Knuckles voice] "Oh no!" In all seriousness, I don't think that was a bad idea. It's just that there are definitely some land-mines in that thread. I have a question, which is if Australia has had a similar history to America in generating an emasculated image of Asian men. Thanks to the Chinese Exclusion Act and various other laws, East Asian immigrants in America were almost exclusively men, and the expat communities they formed were without women. Also, the types of jobs most East Asian laborers did in America were things like houseboys or launderers, traditionally feminine jobs. So, even though before the CEA, East Asian men were depicted as hypermasculine threats, afterwards they morphed into the emasculated image we see today.
@yulanjack
@yulanjack 4 года назад
hey mark, always great to hear your thoughts!! in terms of the aussie context... all i know about early chinese immigration to australia is that a lot of chinese people came over for the gold rush, and i believe it was mostly men. i know there was a lot of anti-chinese sentiment throughout that period and later, but as for emasculation, i'll have to do more research! and yes, posting in reddit always brings about some interesting opinions!

I watched Yellow Fever when it came out and I could very much relate to it and still appreciate Wong Fu for having it put out there. I do want to mention I have gained more insights about this and think it's especially the females who are very sensitive to status and the popularity of men and make the decision in the beginning of the dating process. You can nowadays see this by the lot more attention towards especially Korean Asian men. Thinking back again to Yellow Fever, I would be inclined that White Fever was at least just as prevalent as we now know from the stats from dating apps and the behavior in China as you have showed in this video as well. The positive thing is that on an individual level, any guy can overcome this disadvantage by improving himself and therefore gain a higher social status.

"Asians who try to not be Asian" is a really good observation, especially for foreign-born Asians. For one thing though, we should normalize Yellow Asians as a race regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or culture. I think Asian-born Asians don't have as much understanding of Asianness as races (eg Yellow or Brown Asian) and understand it only as a nationality or a culture. But fluency and cultural literacy, mixed status, nationality, and performance (ie how much a person acts "the right way") doesn't change a person's race. This is clear for Blackness in America, where their personal relationship to Africa or even to Black culture doesn't change an individual's racial identity. But Asians don't have that philosophy or language, and when they leave Asia, this change of place creates more layers of identity issues when it shouldn't. Interesting convo, and shouts out to all us mixed Asians 💪👋

When I was living in Shanghai I was offered a role at a large Chinese company where all I would have to do was dress nice and sit around looking "busy and efficient". Apparently it's common in China to hire "pet white people" to make local companies seem more Westernised and approachable. A lot of my Chinese friends who worked at multinationals in Shanghai were also given random 'Western' names like "Thom" or "Charles", so foreign representatives wouldn't have to try to pronounce Asian-sounding names. It's quite a city... Great video btw Steph!

I am an Asian man living in U.S. So.Calif. I have never dated an Asian woman, partly due to Yellow Fever. There were lots of Asian women in my area but they were more interested in white guys. My sister married a white guy. Most white women preferred their own race. Those who opened to date other races were flexible to all races except Asian men. I have dated white and Latina at ration of 25/75%. Latina were less racist. I also found limited opportunity to marry with any suitable Latina in the U.S. so I looked elsewhere. I am happily married with a Latina from South America.

First of all, “fetish” is an anthropological term that refers to an object that’s imbued with some kind of mystical quality. Karl Marx famously described the commodity as a fetish, whose power is to make the social relations embedded in it invisible. So we could think of the idea of “the Asian fetish”-the symbolic representation of the sexualized Asian woman / feminized man-as having the power to make the histories of colonization embedded within it disappear if you would only post your feet pics.

This is a subject that really "hits home" for me. Not me personally but my two WMAF mixed boys and what it will be like for them to date white girls, (if that is what they choose), in the future. I have been traveling all over China for several decades so I can certainly confirm that many of the items you addressed are true. As a young, well dressed businessman I was constantly approached, photographed, etc. when I was in PRC. If not approached I could tell when I was the subject of conversations in Mandarin. (And my "Handlers" would inform me of the dialog later".) I learned many new terms regarding eye shape, ("big eyes", single or double eyelid, etc.), that I had never heard in the USA. Also discovered that though I loved tanning on the beach during the summer, that my "winter complexion" was preferred. My ego loved the attention and with some frequency dated Asian women. However, the cultural differences were substantial. With all of that said, I hope things change for the sake of my boys. They look very "western" and receive high praise when we are in the 99 Market and other Chinese dominated locations. My focus is going to be on raising them to be confident, polite, well dressed, etc. and as strange as this may sound, to know how to communicate. I will be watching this subject with much interest in the future.

My ABC ex girlfriend’s brother was married to a white woman for many years (AMWF). He served in the Marines for two tours in Afghanistan, lifts weights regularly, and works as an aerospace mechanic - so he’s a very masculine man by any standards, and never had a problem with the ladies. Compare that to her other brother who is tall, but very lanky, and it’s obvious that attractive ‘manly’ qualities in a man are brought on by choice, rather than simply genetics. Bruce Lee was also one of my huge icons growing up, so I never understood this “emasculation of Asian men” in the media stuff.

So is it wrong to be attracted to Asian’s more than another ethnic group? I am a primarily light skinned black American and it’s all really strange enough. Irish+ Israeli+African=... I liked the video but I didn’t get the negative stigma on yellow fever which is a crude way of saying you like Asian’s? Should we stay segregated in choice of people we love? I mean if you date someone because your attracted to them and you both like each other’s personalities then who cares about ethnicity right? Thanks for making the video😋
@yulanjack
@yulanjack 4 года назад
Hi Austin! Thanks for watching and for your thoughts. I don’t think it’s a simple enough issue for there to be a yes or no answer to your questions. My parents are White/Asian and they are my favourite people in the world, so I’m definitely definitely not saying anyone should “stay segregated”. But considering the disproportionate number of Asian females I meet who feel fetishised, and the number of Asian men I talk to who feel that they are at a disadvantage when dating, there’s clearly some imbalances and issues that need to be discussed so there is some awareness. As with everything, so much is dependent on motive and character. But I do think in a general sense that it is great to date diversely - personally I’ve learned a lot from dating outside of my ethnic group(s). I’ve also learned a lot from dating people of the exact same ethnic mix! There aren’t rights and wrongs but I think discussion around this is important :) It might shed some more light on the issue if I was to interview Asian women about their dating experiences. Would also be interesting to see how this manifests in a less heteronormative context.
@austinbarnett2610
@austinbarnett2610 4 года назад
I would really enjoy seeing another interview done as you suggested (that being a female Asian). I would like to know what kind of behavior we men do that makes a woman feel like she being fetishized. I can’t speak for all men but I think 🤔 most men would want to avoid that kinda behavior. If you get a chance to ask multiple Asian woman this question please don’t do it with them all in a group. I have seen way to many great interviews ruined because people who don’t actually have an answer or opinion for a question just go with what someone else is saying which can be just a mainstream idea or form of propaganda. Thanks for your reply
