ABC's What Would You Do? - Extreme Couponing

What Would You Do if you were stuck in a checkout line behind a crazy "Extreme Couponer"? And no, you can't switch lines...we closed them all!
I won a contest held by What Would You Do where viewers submitted scenario ideas. Three winning ideas were chosen, and the winners were flown to New York to watch their idea come to life! I've added some BEHIND-THE-SCENES annotations discussing the trip, what John Quinones is really like, and what you DIDN'T see on TV!

Yeah, but then you also hear that being said by people who spend their time playing video games all day, drinking, sitting on their @$$. So yeah it's still true...that's time they're wasting and missing out on earning money.

Dude, honestly I wouldn't mind at all if I had to wait in line for a lady using coupons, if she's using a lot of coupons is because she actually really needs to use them, and I'll respect that. However, if she starts going back and forth for more things, then I would get upset, because you have to be organized and also think about other people, not just yourself.

Exactly! I am a couponer, but that scenario was ridiculous. I would never hold up a line to go back and get more items. I would come back in after taking my groceries to the car to get the other items. That is not extreme couponing. It is just plain rude. I'm assuming that they did not get the reactions they were hoping for with just using the coupons, so they added in the multiple times of going back for things. I've never had dirty looks or anyone say anything to me about my coupons. It does't take long to scan them if you get exactly what the coupon specifies.

I used to work in retail like this and some people would have full baskets with all these coupons for everything. People would put all these excess and bogus coupons, even for items that aren't in their basket, in an attempt to annoy you and get you so frustrated that you accept them all and override them through. I took my time, though, and checked each and every one. If they were gonna waste my time, I was sure gonna make sure they wouldn't swindle me. There was always a large clump of expired or unnecessary coupons in a pile that I would hand back to them at the end.

I was also a cashier for years. I had certain customers that would do this type of thing - extreme couponing, but I never had one that was so disorganized. Actually, it seemed that the couponers were more organized than the average customer. Anyway, I would swipe the coupons, but if one didn't go through, I would take my time with that particular coupon to see what the issue was, then let the customer know the issue, and let them decide what they wanted to do to correct it. Personally, I never had a couponer in the store I didn't like.

I work at a retail store and this is what I have to say; each customer deserves their transaction to be courteous and patient. I really get in to a case where I get a line building up but I can call back up but never would I say anything directly to the customer regarding coupons holding up the line. Just offer to suspend the transaction for the moment, most people realize that they are holding up a line.

I do "extreme coupon-ing" and I can tell you that the most "extreme" part about it is making sure you've selected your rebates properly before cashing out.. I always have the coupons in line and ready and if people get in line behind me, I let them go ahead if I can so they aren't inconvenienced (or if I'm experiencing a glitch, I tell the cashier to void the entire transaction, which usually prompts the manager to come up and they tend to ring me out then so we can overcome the issues) I have walked out after paying nothing but tax or with rebates that make me money in the end. I bought 24 bottles of shampoo for $0.25 each and 16 bottles of conditioner for nothing in one transaction(no limit coupons that are rare nowadays). I don't pay more than $0.99 per bottle for laundry detergent... I've gotten countless tubes of toothpaste for free or less than $0.50 each.. I email mine and my husbands razor maker once a year for coupon(which they always send out at least $40 for new razor sets and cartridges so I pay next to nothing for them...) Maybe only 3-5% of the time does a transaction run over 5 minutes, and I hardly purchase more than 8-10 items at a time either unless I have to hit a certain subtotal to get a discount or use a coupon.

I love this scenario idea!!! As an Extreme Couponer featured on TLC, I've experienced my fair share of holding lines up with coupons (definitely nothing like this though) It helps make it more tolerable for those behind me when I strike up conversation & usually wind up helping them save money by giving them coupons =)

I agree. If they can't wait in line they should go to another one or just leave the store and come back another time. I even got chewed out by some other customers when I was paying for my purchase with loose change. Anything we do will set people off. They are the ones with the problem

1. Seeing someone sticking it to the man by getting free stuff always makes people happy LOL! 2. Contrary to popular belief almost all extreme couponers know what they are doing and know how to shop without "forgetting" something and when to shop like busy hours vs non-busy hours/days. 3. Stores that know they have extreme couponer customers usually will open a separate line for them as to not annoy regular customers.

love this segment. awesome idea. i started couponing (not extreme but somewhat dedicated) a few months ago and this, THIS is my biggest fear EVER. I'm always scared my coupons would have some issue and i'd hold up the line and people would get annoyed/mad at me. i always double/triple check all of my coupons and my cart before even hitting the register. always think about how you'd feel if you were in other people's shoes and have to wait forever because someone just could not get their sh*t together. this would never happen if people learn to be more considerate. as one man in the video said...saving money is important but remember that time is also money. couponing is fun though. my favorite part (besides the saving money) is the look on the cashier and other customer's faces when they see me walking away after paying only $0.10 or something... or even nothing lol

The same goes for college kids with their ramen and all that. that's why I hit the grocery store most days. Spend 10 minutes grabbing things, another 10 in line with with your 10-30 items. Nobody's held up this way; it's called being considerate of others. The problem with extreme couponers it that they have to buy 30 packages of toilet paper and 5000 bottles of mustard to get their deals, and they don't care a lick who's behind em. They leave the line I'll move their cart to the end myself.

Hah, my mom's an extreme couponer, but she's quick because she organizes them all in a binder and gets them ready before hand. Trust me, if there was a zombie apocolypse, we would easily survive!!

I'm speaking about towards the end when they moved everyone over to one line and that's when people started to get upset. At first they did have more than 1 lane open (2 lines open I recall) but they were both backed up because 1 line was packed with people not wanting to wait for "coupon lady" and then the line with the "coupon lady" was not moving. So thats why at the end they wanted to see how people would react when the only line open was the "coupon lady".

I completely agree. I am a fellow couponer and I do not act like this whatsoever. I am very considerate of others and I think that this segment of WWYD just encourages people to think of couponers as bad people. I am sick and tired of people hating me once they see that I am carrying coupons. It only takes me about five minutes longer than anyone else that doesn't use coupons and I easily save $70.00 a week. People need to stop judging couponers based on the stigma that has been shown.

The show wasn't about coupons - it was about "BOILING POINT" which is already a TV show! A real SUPER COUPONER would have all the stuff there and just present the coupons. This was about a unorganized lady who was taking people's patience to the limit. Asking for extra stuff from customers after she was in line...hell no. I would have said GET ME A MANAGER IN 30 SECONDS OR I WALK AND ALL THESE PEOPLE WILL WALK WITH ME. ---MANAGER: open a second register and run it yourself!

Nope. As soon as you leave for any reason you're not in line anymore, go to the back.

All you gotta do is not get into a line with a black cashier. They would not put up with all that couponing .😂

the only thing worse than the use of a bunch of coupons is the arguing over them with the clerk especially when the line is getting longer.

The thing that gets me is not one single person came up with the idea of telling her, “finish up this round of shopping. Then go back through the store again.” Simple solution.

Once in Walmart the lady in front of me had so many coupons she actually got money back from the cashier instead of having to pay anything. It was pretty crazy seeing her make money from shopping. Took forever in line also so I couldn't help but watch.

This happened to my mother once at a local GIANT, and I swear to god and back I wanted to slap her silly. But when you are getting the groceries, get EVERYTHING not just what you can carry.

Lmao I used to be an extreme couponer but thank God they never closed any other lines. I never used to go back for stuff though.

Thanks for adding the commentary of random tidbits. It made it interesting. I've watched about two dozen of these WWYD clips on youtube so it was cool reading about the inner workings. Ya know I had a feeling that John Q would be a really nice guy. Even though he doesn't necessarily do or say anything particularly nice or mean on the show, you can just tell.
