Loved this type of video. It really helps when comparing how concepts are taught by each curricula. Even when curriculum companies give samples, this isn't always possible.

Does the Teacher Manual have pages of mental.math to give the student for practice? I've used the Singapore Primary Mathematics for levels 2 and 3 and love the mental math in the back of the teacher's guide. But the rest of the teacher book was so confusing.
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 года назад
They don't have mental math pages at the end of the Teacher's Manual. They do have mental math recommendations at the beginning of the chapter as well as individual lessons. I have a primary math vs dimensions math video in the works that I'm planning to publish in a few weeks that is planned to really focus on the differences in the teachers manuals. I have primary 3B and then dimensions 4A teachers manuals that I will be comparing. Thank you for the question!

I have been pondering about Singapore Math, as this seem to have more practical/logical example. I want the kinds to understand vs knowing. Do you agree.
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 года назад
Yes! I just recorded a video last night about why we switched from abeka to Singapore. Understanding vs knowing is a lot of what I talk about. I have to edit and am planning to publish it next week.

A Beka is very much spiral and doesn't dig too deep into the analysis of the problem set. It also focuses more on memorization of math facts. Some kids do very well with this approach until they are asked to problem solve and use different strategies to find an answer (upper elementary). Singapore on the other hand is mastery- based. The child is asked to dig deeper into the concept and analysis, and is trained to focus heavily on mental math strategies in lower elementary grades. I also like that advanced kids can incorporate the Challenging Word Problems and Intensive Practice workbooks for a first- class educational experience in elementary mathematics. I think Math Mammoth is sandwiched somewhere in between Abeka and Singapore, and is the cheapest of all three curriculums, though much less colorful and animated. Anyway, nice video. I gave you a thumbs up. The big question I have for you is why Dimensions instead of say, Primary Math series US edition or Standards Edition??
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 года назад
Thank you so much for the extremely well thought out comment. I really appreciate it. I totally agree that some kids do very well with pure memorization (it is the way that I was taught). I have both the Primary Common Core Edition and the Dimensions edition. We chose the Dimensions edition for a few reasons, the biggest one being that Dimensions goes through 8th grade. However, I think both Primary and Dimensions are great options. I believe that we would have been happy with Primary if we would have chosen it. I like that Primary has the Mental Math included whereas you have to purchase an additional Mental Math supplement for Dimensions. Again, thank you for your comment and please let me know if you have any additional questions.
@user-vg8ez9cu6u
@user-vg8ez9cu6u 3 года назад
@@HomeschoolwithJen really? I wasn't aware that Dimensions didn't include the mental math strategies? What did you end up buying to fill that gap?
@HomeschoolwithJen
@HomeschoolwithJen 3 года назад
Dimensions does have mental math, but it is not nearly as extensive as Primary. Dimensions incorporates it into some of the lessons, whereas Primary also has the worksheets included at the end of the teachers manual. We purchased a Singapore Mental Math workbook that we are going to begin in a couple of weeks. I have a video scheduled for Feb 3 to compare a number of math workbooks and there are 3 Singapore math workbooks included in the video.

Did you take the placement test or did you just choose the level for her grade?
@HomeschoolwithJen

Definitely recommend the placement tests. Singapore Dimensions introduces concepts at different times than some of the other math programs.

@@HomeschoolwithJen so my son has placed very low in Singapore math even thought he is moving into 5th grade Saxon and placed very well on a standardized test. Do you think it’s worth switching and starting back a few grades or just keep using Saxon?
