This was so helpful! I’ve been going back and forth on whether to splurge and get AAR and after this video I definitely am. This helped me realize my son is a tactile learner too and isn’t a fan of worksheets. Thank you so much!

We are doing Abeka phonics and I just bought AAR to add a hands on component and thought thought I was crazy! I'm glad to see that they can work together.

Thankyou so very much for continuing to bring out such wonderful curriculum advice and reviews. As a new home schooling Mum it all gets very overwhelming sifting through the many options. And your videos have helped ALOT with doing that. We have just made the move to the USA this year so am starting to choose curriculum for the upcoming school year. We didnt get far through any Kinder work so will be continuing with that but having these videos to look back on and help make informed decisions has been super super helpful.

Great video! People do tend to run away from traditional curriculum, but I found myself liking them when I’m trying to do straight to the point and nothing else, of whatever I’m trying to accomplish. I use logic of English with my daughter. It has a workbook but it’s not overwhelming at all. Is more of a language arts instead of just reading because it includes; for foundations (phonics, spelling, handwriting and an intro to grammar)- for essentials it covers (phonics, reading, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and a bit of composition if it ties in with the lesson) is straight to the point and teaches everything very well. I am planning to add TGTB for review and to include the geography, art, poetry, literature, etc. and because I’m planning to use TGTB LA when we’re done with LOE. My daughter is an older child learning to read

I’ve seen many people use AAR and Abeka together which I think my daughter would have loved. My daughter used Abeka in her preschool (before we homeschooled) and learned really well from that program. Then we did AAR in Kinder and 1st along with Explode the Code. 😊

We are using Abeka this year for Kinder (just their phonics program) and we LOVE it!! I added in AAR after the first month of Abeka and we are just doing one lesson in AAR per week and I think there are parts of each curriculum that work well. Abeka is one of the highest rated reading programs and it really feels very complete.

We use AAR and my kid doesn't like the fluency sheets either, but they help so much. I just incentivize the fluency sheets by breaking them up over multiple days, and by putting candies at the end of the little sections as motivation.

We have been hard core AAR users for the past 6 of our 8 kids. I finally bought Abeka to try with our youngest when we start school next week. I loved your idea to use AAR as a supplement to Abeka. I never thought of that, but I suspect it will be a good fit for our little guy. Thanks for sharing!

We haven’t used Abecca but we use all about reading!!! We don’t just use one phonics program in our house even with the same kid!!! We prefer using the activities in all about reading along with readers!!! Phonics has helped my older kids read better!!! We haven’t started a reading program with our youngest so Idk how all about reading will work for her when she’s ready for it!!! We use all about reading as a supplement for our older kids and maybe we could do the same with our youngest!!!

I'm currently using explode the code we luv it! We've tried tgatb and it's good just a bit fast paced and a Lil hard with out extra help. Rn we r using explode the code 2 and 180 days of spelling and language arts book. I'm trying to decide if I want to go back to tgatb or just abeka workbook, or just keep with the 180 days etc. Whatever we do we r keeping the explode the code. I mostly just want sumthing to explain the rules give spelling words and like u said workbook.

We are converting from public school to homeschool, grade 3. He is still learning how to read, is AAR a full ELA curriculum or do I need to add more?
@ThisHomeschoolHouse

AAR does not include grammar, so no, not a complete ELA. :)

I hemmed and hawed about phonics for my upcoming 1st grader. We did All About Reading and she did great but she also hated the fluency sheets and would be super resistant to the whole thing. We got level 2, but I'm going to keep abeka in mind in case we need to make a switch. I know our kids won't always love everythig about school, but I dont want her to hate it!

How long did the lessons normally take for each curriculum?
@ThisHomeschoolHouse
@ThisHomeschoolHouse 2 года назад
No more than 20 minutes. I never went longer than that regardless. AAR actually says to set a timer for 20 minutes. With AAR you don't necessarily do a lesson per day.

I have used Abeka K5 for my daughter's kindergarten year, and overall I've LOVED it. I love the way Abeka teaches. However, my daughter is very easily distracted and takes FOREVER to get through the worksheets... she also hates marking special sounds. And when we got to the two-vowel rule, it became too much for her too fast (even with all of the spiral review). So I'm thinking of switching to AAR because of the more hands-on approach (and no worksheets). My questions is, as we move into first grade, do you feel like we'd be missing any of the language arts parts that Abeka begins in first grade by using AAR? Would it be good (or necessary) to add in another program in addition to AAR?
@ThisHomeschoolHouse

I wouldn't worry about it. I would just stick with AAR. :)
