Able Flight is a great program but it appears to suggest that people with disabilities can only aspire to be sport pilots and fly this type of plane that isn't practical for traveling or taking a passenger and a wheelchair at the same time. I have a C7 spinal cord injury and have 1500 hours mostly in a Cessna 177. I have a commercial certificate and an instrument rating. I use a Union Aviation hand control that is unfortunately no longer in production but used ones can be found occasionally for sale. It would be great to see an engineering class design a new hand control.

That’s awesome! I didn’t mean for it to seem like we should stop at a sport pilot license. That just happens to be what this program provides. Many of us want to continue in aviation and are trying to find ways to make it happen. Some of the graduates of Able Flight are currently working on things such as new hand controls and getting higher certifications. Able Flight is meant to jumpstart people in the right direction. Hopefully, through that more opportunities will open up for people with disabilities to go farther in aviation. I’d love to chat with you about your experience with flying if you’re open to it.
