In this Ableton tutorial I'll use stock midi effects to create probability.
Ned Rush is an infotaining universe of ideas for ways to make music, including areas of music production, music composition, sampling, synthesisers and sound design in software like Ableton, MaxMSP, Reason, and on hardware such as eurorack modular, Elektron boxes like the Octatrack and Analog Rytm, also visual art strategies using Jitter, focusing on music genres such electronica, IDM, glitch, jungle, breakcore, electro-acoustic, musique concrete, as well as discussing music via interviews and podcasts, and music performances via livestreams.

you know what? I'm still using this rack...even in Live 11! I love how it lets you modulate probability, like, over time. Really helps to keep a generative piece "alive" so to say! So good!!!

Still love this idea. thanks a bunch. I also made a version of it with an instrument rack with two channels. Each channel contains a rack with the 127 channels set to different velocities. However, one channel has the velocities reversed. I hope that makes sense. This way, instead of the random velocity deciding if a note is either on or off, it will select between two different instruments. these can be panned differently or set to different octaves or whatever.

What I've done before is put the Random plugin in a MIDI Rack or Instrument Rack, and then follow that up with a Pitch plugin set to 0st with range set to 0st and Lowest to whatever note it being triggered (usually C3 for drums). You have to remember to set Chance to the opposite of how often you want it to play (if you want it to play 25% of the time, you need to set it to 75%).

Or if you want to have the Random's chance to actually be the chance of a note playing (instead of the inverse), all you have to do is put a midi rack after it, create a chain and modify the Key range start one note above the trigger note (if C3, then start at C#3). Set Random choices to +1 and inside the midi chain use a Pitch with -1. Now you can group all of it and set a macro for chance and it will show the correct percentage.

I may be wrong, but you can use the "jazz module" , without "sacrificing the velocity". It is available on the lite version

You can always just chuck a velocity plugin in again after the midi effects rack, you just wont be able to play it.

It' is "Forced Jazz" a native Ableton Live plugin (not ''module'', sorry got lost in translation a bit ^^) And yes you HAVE TO FIND IT(you will thank me later j/k) Forced Jazz with drums and the "Beat repeat" native plugin will allow you to macro the grid function from the Beat Repeat (or any other ""glitch" type of plugin ) . Simply paired with the on/off "Forced Jazz" function and you can make some crazy stuff, almost like some free jazz computerized solos/breaks. You just set the number of choices on the number of drums you use in your Drum rack + 1 (+1 being the choice of the silence). Try 75% chances, a low scale value (3 is nice) set the mode to Random and the Sign to "bi". Have fun ;)

The only thing is you'll have to use a midi foot switch if you're drumming with both hands and want to control the Forced jazz presence and the grid value playing live at the same time(I don't have a Push yet). If you use composed drum rack clips instead, you can use a midi controller with faders/knobs and on/off buttons. It's a kind of "controlled randomness". I like to fill my drum rack with realistic drums but you can use this method with any type of samples and even use the Scale native plugin for melodic purposes.

I need help, my probability rack starts playing the sample at around 98 on the macro dial. Anything under that it doesn't play the noise. I did everything you did and yours plays all velocities from 1 to 127. Why does mine start playing the sample, operator or a snare at around 98?

I had the same problem, i solved it by making sure that the Velocity effect is on fixed mode and with the random button turned to 64

Hi ned I have a problem. when the random hits lower velocities the sample is lower and when it hits high velocities it has gradually an higher volume. how can i fix it to make it always the same volume?

Turn off velocity to volume.

My MIDI effect rack continues to be placed before my drum rack and it’s acting as if the drum rack is not playing anything when there are obviously notes in the sequencer. Any help with this?

The distribute ranges equally function on the CHAIN tab of the MIDI effect rack does not work for me in the latest Ableton 10 release or the 11 Beta I currently have installed so I cannot make the rack. I'm not sure if its a bug but I'm wondering if anyone has a Dropbox or WT link for this rack. Not being lazy and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Works ok for me in 10 and you don't really need it in 11, as the probability function is built into MIDI clips.
