Roger Maynard reports on issues facing Australia's indigenous people. In this excerpt from a longer programme he visits Aborigines in the Alice Springs area of central Australia

I built houses in aboriginal communities for years , the most depressing thing I've ever seen .After building a new house and seeing it completely trashed before your eyes then they cry out for more I'm getting depressed even thinking about my time in the apy lands

I too built houses in APY. lots of them. The biggest issue was corruption. The gang running the program was terribly corrupt. We tendered for a job of seven or eight transportable homes. It was directly to the government. We lost the tender. The person who won, came to us and had the exact same houses built and he added his own margin on top. Question: How did we lose the tender? There's more... We built the homes and the fellow who set up the deal, took off with the cash. The government paid this fellow without any checks and balances. They hadn't even been delivered yet. The government then came to us looking for their houses. We said, "when we get paid they will be delivered". This was then they realized they stuffed up. Long story. It didn't go to court, but it got a bit ugly. still not the end... We agreed to sell the homes to the government. To that they replied, "we can't give out money without a tender" (NOTE: the tender was written specifically so we couldn't lose) We lost the tender. The person who won, brought the homes off us and sold them back to the government. True story. Cant make this stuff up. South Australian Government 2009.
I'm a aboriginal living in a community, my house is clean my family's well looked after ,not everyone's the same , look into city's to ,drugs and abuse

The government doesn't want to spend money on them because they know it's going to be wasted, which is why they're promoting this whole idea of white Aboriginal people so that the welfare budget gets spent all over Australia not on these people where it's going to be wasted

No mental anguish ,no mind altering ,drugs, better health, a more nutritious diet of fresh food and vegetables, all supplied by the land,no more deaths in custody all we desire is the land back and racist people to leave. The problem is the white Aborigines who are handling the 40 billion dollars every year know there's no point giving it to these people because they don't want help they want to live like this . And they can't just return to tribal lands because it's all farmlands now all cattle stations . But basically they're doing exactly what they would if they didn't get any help attacking each other and living like very violent stone Age people
Well as i see it, being on a disability pension with heart problems, never to work again and on the scrap heap. i cant even get any government housing as there is a12 year wait. Plus struggle to stay afloat with rent and rising prices all the time. The aboriginal people have problems and us white on the scrap heap also. I might be living under a tarp in the bush also soon the way things are going. I don't drink or gamble, do drugs or go out. I think the white have been forgot also, i got pay for heart test etc, makes it hard on the budget. The aged need a big raise of at least $50 a fortnight, not $2 and $6 ones here and there. So we all got it a bit tough indigenous and all races really. The government waste that much money on enquiries and royal commissions and shit over seas. That they could build housing for every one with that.
Roger you forgot to mention the extra welfare benefits aborigines receive due to their racial identity. Now a lot of the aborigines do live in poverty, however this is more to do with poor lifestyle choices. I myself didn't come from a well off family, have been on welfare for 3 years due to layoff,have to pay private rent(I share with others) and don't live like this in the dirt. I don't receive as much help as the aborigines, the big difference is that I budget, I don't blow my money on things like grog, drugs, gambling etc. I cook my own food, all these things are personal choices. I get annoyed by films produced by certain journos who make out the aborigines have no other choice then to live in the dirt. Nothing could be further from the truth. A bit of personal responsibility wouldn't go astray. Yes I know this is a little foreign to a lot of people, any problem is always caused by someone else and therefore not their own responsibility to fix.

Police Asian No one makes anyone drink. Theres a few bottle shops just down the road from where I live. I only earn a very modest income as a cleaner, I choose not to waste it on alcohol, but on rent, good food etc So please don't crap on about white privillege..Everyone has a choice, including aborigines.To suggest aborigines have no choice in the decisions they make is incredibly insulting to aborigines, are you suggesting aborigines have no free will, because if you are you are just some left wing idiot. Actually, Indigenous Australians life expectancy was much longer around 80-100 years old. Why? Because, they lived a very traditional lifestyle of lean meat and bush fruits. Indigenous Australia’s were never exposed to disease or serious illnesses therefore their life expectancy was extremely high only illnesses were cuts, grazers and sore eyes from the harsh environments they use to be able to survive in. However, infant mortality rates were extremely high bringing down the average age of the Aboriginal life expectancy. But the government don’t want to teach you that because they were only “flora and fauna” and how could we seriously have a race that has a much longer life expectancy than us? Because, we need to make Aboriginal look bad so colonisation is a “good” thing. If you disagree I accept that however I have been studying Aboriginal studies for 6 years now and I am apart of the Barkindji nation where my grandmothers and ancestors use to live much long than what they were perceived to be.

Alberto Fuijimori Yes, they do live in extremely poor conditions as a result of the missons, dispossession and dislocation of colonisation. Indigenous people were forcibly removed from their land that they called home for thousands of years and put into settlements often with similar environments to the camps that you see on the video. So over 120 years of them living in these conditions it does become a generational effect. You see your parents living like this therefore you begin to live exactly the same. It’s only recently that we have begun to try and fix this issue which will take I believe generations, as it does apply to us all that we are a product of our environment and being born within these camps as a result of the missions. You may ask why do they just move away from this environment? However, How can they simply move away from this lifestyle? As they do live in remote areas hundreds of kilometres away from any health centres, education and employment opportunities. Not here to say that Indigenous people at current don’t live like this but previously they did not and had extremely healthy lifestyle, but as a result of colonisation it has impacted their lifestyle and it’s truely sad to see. Also, not here to start an argument only here to educate people. Thank you.
This pommy should do one on housing estates in Liverpool and Manchester UK. All he described is going on there. It’s ludicrous to judge a group of people that were seminomadic who were totally dispossessed and put together in large groups with tribes from other places. This created turmoil for them.
