Two KC-135 Stratotankers of the 100th Air Refueling Wing with callings 'LAGER' at RAF Mildenhall are cleared for take off as a two ship flight. However, as LAGER52 rolls out for takeoff, one of the engines fails and aborted the takeoff. It was lucky the engine failed before the aircraft was airborne. LAGER53, was able to take off, but ended as single flight.
The KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refueling capability for the United States Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 60 years. This unique asset enhances the Air Force's capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach. It also provides aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft. The KC-135 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations.
Four turbofans, mounted under 35-degree swept wings, power the KC-135 to takeoffs at gross weights of up to 322,500 pounds. A cargo deck above the refueling system can hold a mixed load of passengers and cargo. Depending on fuel storage configuration, the KC-135 can carry up to 83,000 pounds of cargo.
Primary Function: Aerial refueling and airlift
Prime Contractor: The Boeing Company
Power Plant: CFM International CFM-56 turbofan engines
Thrust: 21,634 pounds each engine
Wingspan: 130 feet, 10 inches (39.88 meters)
Length: 136 feet, 3 inches (41.53 meters)
Height: 41 feet, 8 inches (12.7 meters)
Speed: 530 miles per hour at 30,000 feet (9,144 meters)
Ceiling: 50,000 feet (15,240 meters)
Range: 1,500 miles (2,419 kilometers) with 150,000 pounds (68,039 kilograms) of transfer fuel; ferry mission, up to 11,015 miles (17,766 kilometers)
Maximum Takeoff Weight: 322,500 pounds (146,285 kilograms)
Maximum Transfer Fuel Load: 200,000 pounds (90,719 kilograms)
Maximum Cargo Capability: 83,000 pounds (37,648 kilograms), 37 passengers
Pallet Positions: 6
Crew: Three: pilot, co-pilot and boom operator. Some KC-135 missions require the addition of a navigator. The Air Force has a limited number of navigator suites that can be installed for unique missions.
Aeromedical Evacuation Crew: A basic crew of five (two flight nurses and three medical technicians) is added for aeromedical evacuation missions. Medical crew may be altered as required by the needs of patients.
Unit Cost: $39.6 million (fiscal 98 constant dollars)

strange that they let the 2nd aircraft take off with out checking the runway for FOD if it was engine failure

Being as all the engines were still running I doubt it was an actual engine failure but likely a sensor/indicator failure.

Funfact: The 'D' marking on the tails of the 100th ARW aircraft at Mildenhall is the only WWII marking still in use. Its kept as a mark of respect to the 100th Bomb Group that flew from Mildenhall in WWII.
@Jimmythefish577
@Jimmythefish577 Год назад
The 100th BG never flew from Mildenhall, they flew from Thorpe Abbots for the entirety of the war. These aircraft carry the ‘D’ because they’re the modern incarnation of the 100th BG, but are now the 100th ARF Wing.
@1chish
@1chish Год назад
@@Jimmythefish577 I stand corrected and always happy to be so when I am wrong. But as you are a stickler for accuracy my use of 'ARW' is correct. There is no 'ARF Wing'. ARW standing for 'Air Refuelling Wing'. Have a safe weekend.
@Jimmythefish577
@Jimmythefish577 Год назад
@@1chishI wasn’t trying to be a stickler, I was just passing on information about where the 100th BG was actually based during WW2. I guess in future I’ll just not say anything and leave people to labour under whatever misapprehension they like. It’s not like being historically accurate really matters at the end of the day. 🤷🏽‍♂️
@1chish
@1chish Год назад
@@Jimmythefish577 I said I stood corrected. I owned up. What more do you want? Sack cloth and ashes? And yes history is important and why I mentioned where the 'D' came from and why in the first place. Names (or rather acronyms) are also important hence my correction to you. Which I see you chose to deflect with sarcasm rather than accept your mistake with the same good grace I did.

Yes absolutely. I think it was Engine 3. When it gets closer, the swirl on the engine 3 seems more profound as you can see it unlike the others. But, great decision from the pilot

Why is there a Royal crest on the vertical stabiliser of a USAF aircraft?
@arjenav5968
@arjenav5968 Год назад
I suppose it has something to do with these USAFE airplanes being based on an Royal Air Force Base, leased to US. Or maybe it's a conspiracy. One never knows.
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Год назад
Because it once was a RAF base, that is the original station crest. In fact, as Lakenheath was a satellite to Mildenhall, Lakenheath technically has the same crest also.

@TedConingsby Год назад
I’m just going with what the pilot said
@nonamenameless5495
@nonamenameless5495 Год назад
Nah you re just taking the term engine failure too literally. There s a plethora of relatively minor issues that lead to aborting (edit: or you cling too much to what you expect an engine failure to look like aka no, most engine failures aren t of the catastrophic kind but yet, good enough reason to abort/check, funny enough mil reg are actually stricter than the civ ones when it comes to abort procedures in "normal" environments). The pilot here already made the call to abort very early, I d say approx 2-3s after the clear. Looks very much like when he was about to go for take off thrust, he instantly aborted. An insta abort translates into appearing as if he had pursued take off for 5-10s depending on load for any outside observer.
@davesmith6734
@davesmith6734 Год назад
The second aircraft shouldn't have been given clearance to take off as the first aircraft hadn't vacated the runway, it's still 50% over the stopbar/ holding point so technically it's still on the runway, just saying 😂
