This now famous scene was entirely Tom and Lis's idea, and done without permission. And they knew that they had to get it right, because they only had one take.
From the 1975 episode, "Pyramids of Mars," Part 4.
I own no rights to anything in this video.

Continuing: Lis had the talent to be a hugh international star, of that I have no doubt. But her family was more important to her. What comes through the autobiography loud and clear, is the solid character and genuine down-to-earth-nature of Lis. The very character of Lis that made "Sarah" so loved worldwide is what had her turning down worldwide stardom. The sad part is realizing that this treasure of a lady is no longer with us, and feeling so sad for Brian and Sadie.

Tom & Liz improvised this based on a Marx Brothers routine.

Continuing: I have always felt that Tom's temperamental behavior immediately after Lis left was due to him feeling lost without her. This is the first time I ever heard Tom admit it in public though. I have noticed that Barry Letts set up the Pertwee / Baker transition using Lis as the foundation. She is the only cast member to appear in all episodes of PLANET O/T SPIDERS & ROBOT. In Part 6 of POTS, SJS is the central character, and most of ROBOT's action revolves around SJS, too.

Continuing: The agreement to not socialize off-screen was to keep the interaction between their characters fresh and spontaneous. Overall Lis' autobiography is charming, warm & adorable. You can almost hear her reading to you, as the words are clearly "Lis". As much as she loved "Sarah Jane" & her fans, Lis loved most of all being Mrs Brian Miller, Sadie's mom, & husband Brian is a big part of her story. "I wanted to be with Brian" had her turning down International stardom. CONT

@63DW89A I hope to read her autobiography sometime. I usually find such books depressing, but all I've heard about this particular book sounds wonderful. I've never heard that about Tom either, but Lis/Sarah Jane was an almost inextricable part of his character during her tenure, so it's easy to believe. One thing I'd noticed about their fantastic chemistry on-sceen was that it seemed so genuine; he really seemed to have a deep, real-life affection for Lis. (cont.)

@EmmaJaneMurdock Glad to hear you had a wonderful, full Christmas! Concerning ELISABETH SLADEN: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY, it is a heart-warming and charming trip through the life of Lis. It is as if she is reading it to you herself, as the written words are very much "Lis". There are many wonderful stories that I wish Lis would have gone into more detail on, but she told us what she wanted and I respect that. I DO find myself hoping that Brian will do a "Life with Lis" sequel!

EmmaJaneMurdock, I've been reading ELISABETH SLADEN: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY. I hope you get a chance to read it, as it is about the most charming biography I have ever read. Tom Baker was a panel guest at the book's official launch on NOV 26, 2011. In his remarks to the audience, he credits his time working with Lis as permmanently changing his life for the better, as she guided him in creating his character, and helped him overcome his self-doubt. He said he was devastated when she left. Cont:

@63DW89A (Cont.) Unfortunately, I have yet to see Planet of the Spiders, but it doesn't surprise me that she was made a foundation for him during his change. I always thought Robot was a particularly good episode for her. Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! I love discussions like this. :)

@63DW89A What I usually hate about biographies is that the person is almost always revealed to be less than the inspiration you thought they were. But it sounds as if Lis really was what we believed her to be. Thank you for the recommendation; I will definitely try to pick it up sometime. And I apologize for the late reply; my Christmas schedule was very busy!

@63DW89A (cont.) This was confirmed for me by the interview with Lis where she described the going-away party he threw for her and the fairy lights he had put up just for her. There's a particular scene that pops in my head; it's very small, and I think it's from The Android Invasion, but their heads are very close, and he puts his just a little closer to hers. You can't really fake affection like that. (You can see it in this video, at about 1.25: /watch?v=Blu05klLvfc) (Cont.)

@EmmaJaneMurdock The first 6 shows for SJS from TIME WARRIOR thru ROBOT look much like a preview for SJA, as Sarah gets as much screen time as the Dr. The scene you referenced is from Part 6 of SEEDS OF DOOM. Early in the PLANET OF EVIL DVD commentary Tom says to Lis, " I've never been as happy as I was then....with you Elisabeth". He also says he fantasized about adopting her! Yes, Tom & Lis were genuinely close, BUT they both agreed to socialize ONLY @ work. CONT:
