I work at ulta; I was so hyped to buy these bc I don’t have many holo pigments, then when I was making testers I noticed that there is zero holo to any of them. I was so disappointed tbh, like why not just say multichromes? It’s what they are lol. I went to About Faces insta page to see if I was just tripping and don’t know holo shades since I’m more of a multi chrome person. Multiple people told the brand that it was not holographic in the slightest, and they kept insisting it was 🤦🏻‍♀️

So disappointing! If you haven’t tried touch of glam holochromes, I just did recently and highly recommend them! They truly are holo, still shifty too and don’t do that weird silvery thing some holos do unless you specifically buy one of the silvery ones. Some shades I’m currently loving bloodline holo, soda pop holo, lucid holo, and their birthday style multichromes! I keep wanting to try more lmao. I can’t be stopped 😂

It's interesting because 'multichrome'/'duochrome' do not actually have any legal or even industry-standard definition. They are usually termed 'speciality pigment: colour shifting', although some still use proprietary names like 'chameleon' and 'spectra' in their names. You also hear 'pearl pigment' a lot too. Technically, they are all actually 'iridescents' - even black-based ones. Weirdly, 'holographic' is actually legally defined because it has a longer history in anti-counterfeiting technologies as well as others. However, since it is easier to produce and has been used on so many types of item - it is not a regulated term, except for very specific industries/applications. I suspect the reason you won't find many mainstream brands using actual holographic pigments in eye products is because they are PET glitter (and often not the correct shape for use outside of nail products) and not allowed near the eyes or face in most countries. Side note: I have not confirmed with a microscope, but I am 98% certain Clionadh Dimensional Multichromes do not use actual holographic pigments. I think they use various different coloured pigments just mixed together to give that effect.

Im sure it will take a while for mainstream brands to launch holographic eyeshadows as indies have done. I have heard from brands that eye safe holographic pigment exists, and it’s not glitter. I used the clionadh shade for a multichrome reference that was somewhat of a similar tone to the Make Beauty shade, it was not an example of a holo, sorry if that was confusing in the video!

@badtothebrow I have heard the same from brands, but then I have checked their ingredients lists and found nonspecific 'polyethylene' listed in holo shades when it is not in their non-holo formulations. It *might* be another type of polyethylene, but it is strange. I do not have anything against PET (or similar) glitter - it is just difficult/impossible to market as an eye product in a lot of countries, so that is why we are less likely to see it. Also, I really really hope all small indie brands are doing their due diligence when it comes to holo pigments - especially those using labs they cannot visit.

Idk there was a polish company called Glam Shop I purchased from a few times during the height of the virus and she had the most stunning holo shades you ever want to see. The swatches are still on my Instagram, and these were true holo's. Smooth like butter, and went on like a normal shimmer shade. These weren't advertised as PET glitters, and I believed her. Unfortunately she doesn't make them anymore due to how expensive they were to make and people weren't yet familiar with them so they weren't selling. She made them before it's time and many trust "glitters". I personally snagged all 10

@justinejustice_league1857 I love Glam Shop and own many of their holos - they are very beautiful. They were still selling some until a few months ago, and polyethylene terephthalate was listed in the ingredients. I trust Glam Shop because they did not obscure ingredients, and they can visit their manufacturers. ColourPop sells some newer shades with PBT glitter and does not explicitly market them as 'pressed glitters' because they contain other large particle size pigments as well. I trust them as much as Glam Shop and for similar reasons - my point is that marketing terms are not necessarily same as industry or scientific terms. It can be easier for manufacturers/brands to be slightly misleading because consumers can assume 'not a pressed glitter' means 'no glitter at all' or that 'no PET glitter' means 'no plastic glitter of any kind'. I really don't hate glitter at all - I own many holos and other types of glitter - I just prefer it to be clearly labelled and for it to be cosmetic grade (for face, not just nails). It is understandable that larger non-indie brands might be less likely to use holo/glitter because they sell in physical stores in many countries where it is law to label as 'unsuitable for the immediate eye area'. Although, some drugstore brands seem to like glitter - maybe we will see from them first!

I completely agree with Richard here. I've steered clear of holo eyeshadows because when I was making eyeshadow, I researched holo "pigments" & no such thing existed. It could be that newer tech has figured out a way to spray the holo effect onto micas... But I'm skeptical. Also, as Richard pointed out, many of the brands who do sell holo eyeshadow, have a polyethylene ingredient. It screams PET plastics to me, but then again, I'm not a cosmetic chemist.

I hear the matte version of the liquid shadows are pretty good and long lasting but at 16 a shadow I’m always more tempted to spend my coin on one of the new palette releases or a even a quick quad because thus far I’ve never achieved a look with a liquid shadow on par with what I’ve achieved with a pressed and I don’t have time for redos

You've reminded me about the old (early 2000s?) L'Oreal "holographic" shadows... Completely the wrong name, but that bright tealy blue was my favourite for years.

I was able to test the about-face in store so I knew what I was getting. When I got home and looked closer I was like wait this isn’t holographic. Didn’t think much of it but you’re so right it is misleading. As a multichrome though I LOVE the about-face 😍

Also disclaimer! I just use them as a liner, never over my entire lid. So for my limited needs they’re wonderful.

They’re pretty, but the Gleam shade is a shimmer/metallic and the AF is definitely not holographic. It’s too bad because their other liquid shadows are really nice.

I’m not understanding why brands start with liquid multichrome shadows, it’s not an easy formula to get right and frankly I’ve only ever come across one liquid mc that’s good which is ND Chromium liquid shadow. I’d rather they do pressed shadows. Holographic and multichrome have just become buzzwords now

Hmm I was tempted bc I like about faces matte liquid shadows, but damn that’s disappointing. Honestly Sydney Grace has both of these types of items on lock and for a much better price.
