Today we talk about those orchids who require much more fertilizer than we expect, considering we are always advise to never over fertilize.

Some orchids simply have too big structures, or too fast growth to rely on the minimal amount of fertilizer we provide. In time they will deplete their resources if we don't fertilize at all.
One of the heaviest feeding orchids is the Catasetum orchid and its relatives. They produce impressive structures and fully mature a new growth in only 6 to 9 months, the other 3 months are usually spent of producing flowers. Many Catasetum growers use slow release fertilizer with their orchids and the success is evident.
Phalaenopsis orchids are actually heavy feeders as well, in particular the big or medium sized ones. The grow massive leaves and big roots and need to maintain them for a few years. Not to mention they can produce abundant flowers and long flower spikes.
Dendrobiums, deciduous and nobiles in particular are also heavy feeders, they need to fully mature a set of new canes and bloom, all within a year. Usually they are not very small orchids.
Generally the bigger and more complex structures, that mature in a short while, the more nutrient uptake. This needs to be accompanied by good light and temperatures, within the range advised for the particular species.
