This video reminds me of a lab class in a college course in introductory botany that I took in 1963. It dealt with identifying different groups of plants. This video would have been would have been in an advanced( sophomore or junior year)) course because it deals with a very specific group of plants and care issues. Your knowledge of orchids astounds me since you imply it is self taught and based on experience. Your videos are very well thought out like that of lessons of a good college professor. As with all you previous videos, thumbs up on this one too.
I just started taking care of oncidiums and have a few oncidiums that are sprouting new growths! I'm so proud of my girls. was curious what materials you use to train the pseudobulbs to grow upright. They always poke through at a wonky angle at first, don't they.
Very good video!!!,i really like your accent!!! I think the right way to define the term of the word that you use( "distinct species ")is the plant genus and not simply saying "species". For example,Oncidium is genus,Oncidium sotoanum is one of its species. The genus Oncidium is different from the genus Brassia, Miltonia genus , Miltoniopsis, Gomesa, Rynchostele etc. in the same way as genus Phalaenopsis and genus Vanda are different. The hybrids resulting from hybridization between species and hybrids of these genera are just what we call intergenerics. Keep giving us usefull informations!!!

Also: Miltoniopsis orchids are mean. Mean mean mean. I killed them all and all my nelly islers. What else have I killed? A few that were obviously outside of my skill and environment, but I easily murder every miltoniopsis. I will still buy them, though, because the flowers are so numerous and beautiful!
Hi Danny, really nice video as usual ;) But, for me, Miltoniopsis are so easy to grow, unlike Oncidiums... Miltoniopsis seem to do great with one watering a week unlike Oncidiums, which are always bone dry when I comme back home the week after ... :(

Dani, I have to say that I watch your videos religiously. I have applied your imparted wisdom to my ever-growing intergeneric collection and your guidance has never failed me! However, within the last few months I obtained an intergeneric specimen labeled Zelenkocidium "Kukoo" (zelenkoa onusta x oncidium cheirophorum). I was curious if you have had any experience with this particular type -- there seems to be a lot of contradictory information about its maintenance online. The oncidium parentage, I assume, would dictate that it needs bright light and consistent moisture, but having found that Zelenkoa is actually a desert-dwelling orchid native to South America, gardening centers and nurseries suggest that it requires a drier period during the winter months. Since its blooms fell back in late January (I live in Cleveland, Ohio), my Zelenkocidium has "staled" -- it has not produced any new growths/roots, nor have its existing pseudobulbs perked back up (some information online says that Zelenkoa will actually shrivel, naturally, during the dryer winter months). Any thoughts or suggestions on where I can obtain more consistent information in regards to its maintenance? It's such a charming plant; I'd hate to lose it! +Erik Hellgren Hi Erik, I'm glad you enjoy my videos :D ok about your orchid, I've never owned it but I came across people talking about it so I will tell you the impressions I was left with from their talks. It appears that this orchid is a pretty sturdy Oncidium type orchid, more drought tolerant than others apparently. However the care is pretty similar to an oncidium, with the exception of the watering aspect. From what I understand people have better success with it in a well draining medium that doesn't retain all that much water (such as bark, but not sphagnum moss). I think if you make a watering regime where you let the medium dry between watering it should work well. Just look at your orchid as it grows, excessively wrinkly pseudobulbs and pleated, accordion shaped leaves means dehydration, so that should tell you that watering is needed more frequently. If the plant grows good though the watering regime is good. There are many orchids that don't experience heavy rainfall in their habitats but do experience high humidity or abundance of dew, that pretty much counts as watering :) hope this helped and good luck!
+MissOrchidGirl Fantastic! Thank you, Dani! I have it in a small, non-glazed terracotta pot with pine bark, so it rarely retains water for a full 24 hours. I've read that Zelenkoa, in its natural habitat, receives most of its water from heavy mists and morning dew, so I have tried my best to emulate that set-up. Though its leaves are still green and firm, I was just worried about its apparent lack of active growth and shriveled pseudobulbs. Your suggestions affirm my suspicions, however, so hopefully with some more patience it'll perk back up. Thanks again! Can't wait to see what you post next!

I mean like any small babies either catts or dens/oncidium ...they take too much time...for me some of the growth are stagnant!! How to grow them faster..any tips pls!! Love, Puja

Hi, maybe somebody can answer to my comment. I am not an orchid expert. I ordered from Germany, Wichmann Orchids, 7 orchids, among them 3 beallara, all in good shape but 1, I am not sure about the beallara Patricia Mc Cully, most of the bulbs are soft and dark brown an wrinkled (not looking great at all) am I right? It has even to new growth (young bulbs) that looks green and ok, could it means that it wasn’t in great shape but now is recovering, because of the new bulbs? The others are really looking good and different (the Peggy Ruth Carpenter Morning joy and the Tahoma x Miltonia Honolulu).

Hi Danny :) I have a pests infestation!!! I looked on the internet, because the pests were very big, not tiny at all, and it turns out that I have longtailed mealybugs on all of my dendrobium nobiles and epidendrums! HOW CAN I GET RID OF THEM?!?!?!!? I tried hydrogen peroxside and it doesn't work! What should I do? When I saw them I almost died, because they look so freaking scary O_O
i know this is completely a different topic and or video but i need your help!! i have a keiki from my grandmother. and it looks super dehydrated its a phalanopsis orchid, i have it potted and it has really healthy looking g roots but the leave look dehydrated and one looks like it had something puncture it😕 can you please help me i wanna know if this keiki will be okay.i can't attach a picture im sorry
Hi Dani, my Oncidium leafs are curling up and the flower buds are dropping after purchasing from an Orchid show. On the leaf level, the foot candle is around 400 on the top of the flower spike it is about 1500 foot candles. It is being lit by two T5 light bulbs. Please advice.

Orchids are not mean. YOU are for growing them inappropriately. They like cool temps, humidity and have fine roots. Know what you are growing and you will have less problems and anger issues. Aren't you the same poster that called a friend an "asshole" because they gave you an orchid, you killed it and had to go buy more. You accused them of driving you to financial ruin. Have you considered plastic flowers or silk arrangements?
MissOrchidGirl I do not understand your reply. Her original comment was posted on your channel and that was what I replied to. Not you. I only watch your channel and not Astrid's. She is very negative which is what I wanted to bring to her attention. Clearly you are a master grower and I doubt anyone would every say anything bad about you. Sorry for the confusion.
