Above It All @ the USS Salem - Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, MA - 4K Drone Flight - DJI Mavic Air 2 

I served on the Salem in 1950 in the Mediterranean. As the ship's photographer, I could roam all over the ship when I waned to. One time I was walking alongside on of the 5" turrets when they let go a salvo. My ears have never recovered.

She played the part of the pocketbattleship Graf Spee in the movie Battle of the river plate. Looked much better then than now.

She, and her two sisters, Newport News and Salem, were the only 8" gun cruisers with automatic loading 8" guns. At max range, 32,400 yards, with all nine tubes in full automatic, she could have ninety nine 8" rounds in the air, before the first one landed! That's a lot of ordnance coming your way! Of course, they never would do that in actual use as it would just burn up the barrel liners, but it's a nice capability!

Wow, thank you for the memories, if you look at the land behind the stern of the ship, that's my neighborhood, born in 1960, that bridge separates North Weymouth from Quincy, my dad worked in that shipyard. That bridge you see isn't very old, the old foreriver bridge was a draw bridge, me and my friends would jump the bridge back early '70's, they'd call the cops and whichever town cops came we would hide behind the base columns in the water, great times.

She's looking a bit rough these days, but from what I understand she's still in remarkably good mechanical and structural condition. Could use a new coat of paint but it's good to know that her bones are strong.

Visited Salem a couple of times, very impressive ship. Really loved a bonus trip through the armored deck hatch and into the boiler room for a look see. Amazing to think of these being conceived and designed with pencils and slide rules, then coming to fruition. Heartbreaking to see the names of once great American industrial giants all over the ship’s equipment and now they’re building, or at least selling, junk that doesn’t last 5 years.

When I was in the Navy we shared a pier at North Island in San Diego with the USS Saint Paul CA73 during 1966, I believe that was the last "in Commission" heavy cruiser "gun boat". I never tired of looking at her beautiful lines...

Sally is such a beautiful lady, powerful, sleek, and just amazing...it would be unrealistic, but amazing, to refit her with a suite of launchers and ams, some CIWS, and cruise around the world showing how amazingly wondrous US Naval designs are...

This ship is in World of Warships, and was my first Tier 10. I enjoy playing her to this day. Those auto loading 8" guns make her a real damage per minute monster. Looking at all those fast firing 8", 5", and 76mm guns make me think this thing would have been absolutely AAA hell for a pilot in the 40's. I'm glad they saved her, I will visit her some day.

I remember walking by the USS Salem when I was in DC school in Philadelphia NSY in 1973, I seem to remember there was another sister ship tied next to it.

Former USN Surface Warfare Officer; I grew up looking at this ship in Philadelphia, along with her two now scrapped sisters. The ship isn't in the best location to attract people & tour revenue. The state of Massachusetts needs to step up and provide funding to fill the gap in the Association's revenue to get the ship properly preserved and located somewhere to attract people. The ship is sagging 6" midships between bow and stern due to the lack of weight compensation after defueling the fore & aft tank groups. That might create issues over time as it's been that way since 1959. The hull freeboard at/near the waterline is corroded and that's bad news, as that's where the decay will occur first and will eventually lose watertight integrity. Don't be too concerned about the superstructure as that can be accessed & fixed relatively easily with ladders and professional scaffolding. A lot of the rust there is cosmetic. You gotta worry about the hull, because hull repairs require dry docking and that's hugely expensive. Successful museum ships survive because of tour revenue streams and state government support. The USS Olympia on the Delaware River is a good example of this, enjoying neither of the aforementioned, she is likely to end up as an artificial reef off the New Jersey coast. Don't let the Salem end up in Brownsville like her two sisters.

She is in sad shape. The management seems apathetic. They should move it to Fall River. They seem to care about the presentation. The Salem is slowly turning into a rust bucket. I was told by a worker that the organization that runs it says that when they do scout sleepovers the city & county want to change the classification of the ship to 'Hotel" and tax it accordingly. Really?

Again a design to fight in the last war and not the era into which she was unfortunately born.

Why did they dock her in such a horrible location? She needs to be docked some where more fitting as a memorial than some junky looking factory complex. Also they better start doing some serious restoration repairs, and maintenance work on her. Or she isn't going to be the last of her mind anymore. Some of the gun tins are pretty rusted out which soon will be unsafe not only to support the guns in them. But for people to even walk in. Her main decking is dry rotting out and also soon will not be safe for people to walk on as well. The one thing people tend not to understand is when a ship is sold or donated to become a museum. It still falls under the Navy's descression on it's state of conditions. If a ship even as a museum becomes in such bad state of repair it is considered unsafe. The Navy will take it back and scrap it.. and from this video this ship is indeed in danger of that very possibility of happening.

This ship was obsolete when launched, it was only in commission for 10 years, and the Navy didn't want it. Outside that fact that it was built in Quincy, there isn't much historically important about it. Face it, unless people are really interested, an old cruiser isn't a draw. My guess is that it will be scrapped.
