I did tower work for over 20 years. It's hard on your body. They show guys riding up in a man basket........lol........ That's only when your building a tower. If we took something down "antenna and line" usually the cable tray is not by the ladder. I've climbed the cable tray removing snap in's. They are usually about 4 feet apart. And full of lines. Try climbing a ladder with rungs 4 feet apart covered in 1-5/8 Heliax. Fun stuff. Working in the winter. We worked all year. Working in the rain. Usually on the ground but i did do a few antenna swaps in the rain. Cops got to be able to talk.........

Your videos- shot with drones I assume, are amazing. Never have I seen such breathtaking views of towers tops and sweeping landscapes. I hope the FAA doesn't mess up your business with draconian drones restrictions because it would be a pity to lose the ability to get such stunning photography.
@PrairieAerial
@PrairieAerial 9 лет назад
Nathan Kayle Yes shot with a drone. I'm putting my 2 cents worth in the new drone regulation public comments, since tower inspecting was one of the specific things they mentioned in the intro to the proposed rules. We need to get higher than 500' in the tower world.
@nakayle
@nakayle 9 лет назад
***** Well an airplane should be nowhere near a tower in the first place or they got a lot more to worry about than a little drone. It's why until now it's been hard to get good photography of towers because 'copter pilots were justifiably afraid of hitting guy wires. I recall this happened a few years ago.
@jasonpreston4297
@jasonpreston4297 9 лет назад
Technically right now the rule is 400 ft albeit somewhat questionable on enforcement as its only part of an Advisory Circular, but with the new drone legislation I'm sure they will concrete that 400 ft for Hobby use. If this is commercial then its definitely illegal as all 333 certificates come with a 400 ft restriction and initially only a 200 ft COA.
@nakayle
@nakayle 9 лет назад
jason preston A height exception should be made for professionals inspecting or photographing tall towers and buildings since no airplane should be anywhere near them anyway.
@jasonpreston4297
@jasonpreston4297 9 лет назад
The FAA has made a complete mess of the new rules anyway. Commercial use in Urban areas is not possible legally. You have to be at least 500 ft from non participating people, vehicles or buildings. So if you are shooting anything in the city and a car drives by then you are done. Enforcement will be another issue altogether, but why make the rules so unrealistic to start with.

Several years ago I was offered a job doing maintenance work for a small local FM station. When ask if I would climb the tower, I said sure up to the light controller, it was 10 feet of the ground. Need I say more. It was only 300 feet to the top.

Communication Tower Deaths. Tower climbing, an obscure field with no more than 10,000 workers, has a death rate roughly 10 times that of construction. In the last nine years, nearly 100 tower climbers have been killed on the job. More than half of them were working on cell sites.

The risk is not that you go this high, the risk is that you get within inches from the antenna when you should be at least 25 feet away. You are very unlikely to die of a fall, but you are very much likely to get tumors and other cancerous issues. How much is your life worth? The companies which hire you make billions every months from the job you do and they should pay you enough to cover chemo and make sure your family will never have to worry about money if anything happens to you. So the big question is how much do you get paid and what is the life insurance your partners and kids will get if you die ?
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 11 месяцев назад
Nobody is getting cancer, man. Stop it. The antennas are turned off before anyone gets near them. That's why most of these climbs happen at night.
