Sir Richard Rodney Bennett studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Howard Ferguson and Lennox Berkeley, then privately with Pierre Boulez in Paris, France. He was enormously prolific and versatile as a composer and was also well known as a jazz pianist.
Thjs piece is taken from A Week of Birthdays- seven short piano pieces based on the anonymous poem Monday's Child, which links a person's character to their day of birth. It reads:
