Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I will guide you through chapter seven in ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 1 which introduces rests. I explain symbols which represent silence in values of a semiquavers/sixteenth note, quavers/eighth note, crotchets/quarter note, minims/half note and semibreves/whole note.
I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 1 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.
Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.
I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Sharon, these theory exercises are great!! I've done practical exams up to Grade 5 but never attempted any theory. starting back to basics from Grade 1 and this is really helpful! So I shall hopefully find grades 2 onwards just as helpful!

@11:19 a whole rest has 4 beats but how could you write that in a 3/4 Time signature ? Sorry I don't get it coz I'm a basic learner.
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
If you read in the information of your ABRSM workbook, or refer to the PDF you'll see that a semibreve rest is also used to show a complete bar's rest, regardless of the time signature.
