Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this music theory lesson I explain the eleventh Chapter in ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 4. In this tutorial I explain how to understand ornaments, including the trill (shake), turn, upper mordent, lower mordent, turn, appoggiatura and acciaccatura (crushed note).
I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 4 ABRSM Music Theory in Practise workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.
Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.
I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Thank you so much Sharon ! I do online theory classes every week, and I’m too scared to ask the teacher for help, your explanations really helped me understand each section and helped me check over my answers !! I’m so great full for your videos :)

I'm so pleased that my videos are helping. I'm sure you can ask your teacher for help - that's what teachers are for, and that's how you learn. Even so, I'm pleased that my videos can help support your lessons. Enjoy your studies 😊

Hi Sharon I love your tutorials, would you perhaps consider giving some tips on Trinity Exam preparation?🙏🏿
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 3 года назад
Thank you! I did make a start on releasing tutorials on the Trinity syllabus. However, I had to remove them as Trinity contacted me and prohibited me from showing portions of their tuition books and I had to take the videos down. As such I can no longer offer lessons for this syllabus.

I got confused when studying mordents vs trills. Other people weren't explaining well, and then I thought of you. I STILL picture Yvette Fielding when I hear your voice with no face.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful. It would be even more helpful that you clarify what you mean by "evenly written" because in the exercise related to mordents: upper and lower...you chose an answer based on it being evenly divided and disregarded in the lower mordent example an evenly divided option. So that was confusing. Please clarify. Also note that an acciaccatura is pronounced: achakatura. Thanks again.
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
I've not heard it pronounced that way here. However, I take your point.

Hello! I’m having a hard time telling which symbols go to which notes played together. Is there an easier to remember this? Have a good day!
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 3 года назад
I think it's easier when you've actually played them. Try playing them so that you fully understand how they are realised. :D

Why do I always get confused about ornaments!? My flute and piano teacher is always explaining about this subject but I am soooooo of the line
@SharonBill
@SharonBill 4 года назад
It may be just because you don't use them often in your playing? If you don't come across something regularly it stays a bit alien. Just keep refreshing your memory :D
