One thing I'd like to add is that it only took me about a day or two to learn to read Hiragana... but "reading" really meant slow and painful reading with the occasional "is that me or nu" doubt. This is totally fine and expected, I think. The more you read, the easier it will become and the faster you will read. Almost half a year later, I can read much faster (even though it's still not as fast as Latin characters). For Katakana, it's unfortunately worse because of a) it being much rarer and b) シツソン

Came here to say I finished my one year of basic Japanese at my University with an A. All thanks to Andy! I put in a lot of work obviously, I payed extra attention to his videos and re-watched them when I struggled. However, he is the king of explaining grammar, I couldn't have done it without him! A tip I would give in studying all parts of the Japanese language, is to write everything out by hand so you remember it. Keep all your notes in an organized notebook. Thank you Andy! Good luck to everyone else learning Japanese! You can do it! がんばて!

I learned hiragana in a few days before starting out with learning anything else. I was too lazy to learn Katakana, but I’ve slowly and surely picked it up, too now. What definitely helped me was having the strict rule of never writing or reading in romaji, and I think thanks to that my reading speed is pretty good already. However, Kanji is going to take some time… 😅

I agree with most of your points, however for me personally...? I needed to apply the kana for it to stick. Learning vocabularly alongside learning hiragana has helped me tremendously. Every time I attempted to start learning and focusing ONLY on hiragana and katakana, I eventually would give up and not touch it for months after feeling like I was getting nowhere. I felt incredibly overwhelmed by doing so and worse I have extremely bad short term memory due to longstanding learning disabilities. So please don't say that you should only learn kana before doing anything else. ESPECIALLY when most learners are not memorizing and understanding kana in a couple hours as claimed. You CAN learn and apply what you've learned with hiragana/katakana alongside vocabulary; and it is 100% okay to do so, especially if you're struggling. I found learning the kana alongside vocabulary much easier for me to grasp and remember. Admittedly, like some of the others, this has turned me quite a bit off from the content.

I've been doing Anki to learn Kanji and strengthen my kana through repetition, because I taught myself the kana before starting repetition. It's been slow going, but I'm sticking to it. I'm about 400 or so in. I REALLY want to start on vocabulary, it's kinda driving me crazy, at points, but then I see all that I've been learning and it calms me back down about the process. I'll do vocabulary when I'm ready. I may still have over 1800 kanji to learn, but I've been enjoying it. Especially since when I learn new kanji, I write them, and I've been intending to draw more visual stimuli for kanji. That has helped me cement certain kanji in my mind, just by drawing a simple piece of art for them, and remembering that art and what it's associated with.

In the past few months, I've been watching your videos (I'm still at lesson 5 Genki 1 because I'm a slow learner, and English is my second language!) I appreciate you writing both Kanji and Katakana using Hiragana on the side, so I don't feel that I'm missing out on some verb forms, grammar, conjugation, ...etc. Once in a while, I have to refer to my Arabic language to figure out the Japanese grammar since sometimes the English one does not always stick 🤣😉

I learned my Hiragana and Katakana by forcing myself to do Sporcle quizzes over and over, I found it to be very effective. I made up my own little story or “meaning” as best as I could, about each symbol. Like how I remembered the difference between ぬ(nu) and め(me) wasn’t quite what someone would expect. I said to myself that ぬ(nu) has that extra loose “tail” at right side but め(me) doesn’t, so that shows that め(me) is closer to itself (less loose), in other words yourself or the word ME (as in the English word me) became my device to remember the difference.

That depends on how much time you HAVE. If you only have 1 hour per day, it's always going to be better than 0. It also depends on what your goals and timelines are like. You can do quite a bit with 1 hour per day though, if you can focus for the whole hour. =)

Anyone who says that you can learn Hiragana in just a few hours is either full of shit or has an incredible memory better than most people. I hate hearing that because it always makes me feel like crap in the fact that I can never remember every single character within a “few hours”. Of course, I’m not studying six hours a day and if I were I probably would be able to. But his comment also presupposes that you are reviewing that information every single day for weeks on end (if you aren’t then you really are a savant). Then you could truly say that you remembered it and thus you have “learned” it. I’m always looking for information about learning Japanese more efficiently but it turns me off when RU-vidrs say that about learning Hiragana. How many people have the time to master something in another language in a “few hours”… please.
@ToKiniAndy
@ToKiniAndy Год назад
That's fair. But, if you use stories on things like the Tofugu blog post, it really does only take a few hours of focus to get the gist of it. Of course you're going to forget them over time, but if you keep going and never go back to Romaji, each character gets reinforced for every single word that you read. This makes review much less necessary for hiragana than for any other part of the language. Katakana took me longer to learn, possibly because many look alike, but with a good story for each hiragana character it doesn't take too long. Of course, this will be different between individuals, but I see no reason to lie that it took me longer than it actually did. I'm sorry for turning you off, though. =(

....Of course, in actual reality, you literally never need to learn kana or kanji, or hirigana unless you are learning it specifically for a job that involves writing, because all Japanese can read romaji. So you sow distrust on your video after approximately 3 seconds, since obviously you can learn Japanese much easier if you aren't trying to memorize complicated letters at the same time. And if you are learning for personal interest, then you have the ability to learn kana much easier when you already speak fluent Japanese so that you don't have to try to learn two different things at the same time and one of which is something you will never need in daily everyday life.
