Guys, you follow these two docs' teaching and do the exercises well! They are amazing! Got herniated disc 6 months ago and the pain was immense. And my doctor says he can introduce me to some surgeons rather than giving me exercises. I was quite depressed and found Bob and Brad. I followed their instructions and did the Makinze exercise quite seriously. Now I am completely healed (may be). I can even lift my leg while laying on the bed which is a very difficult task for people with herniated discs or sciatica. Cannot thank enough to these docs! They are like angels for me.

I’ve been living for months (maybe even a year) with what I thought was a tight hamstring. I’ve been going to chiro and working with a private yoga instructor and neither has helped. Your videos not only helped me figure out that it wasn’t piriformis syndrome but likely a nerve issue instead, but with only one round of the push up stretch from lying on my stomach, I don’t have any of the pain and tightness that has been haunting me. Thank you! I feel like I have a new lease on life. You guys are the best!

Guys I tried everything including exercises, stretching, going for walks (2hours daily, first 15 minutes was horrible I had tears in my eyes) went to a chiropractor, massages, hot springs, all these things helped but it didn’t cure my sciatica the pain always came back in short time. I didn’t want to get surgery because I read multiple comments how it made it worst. I had sciatica for 4 years it was so bad I couldn’t sit or sleep on a mattress I was sleeping on the floor (the hard surface made the pain bearable) couldn’t work or do ordinary things it was miserable to say the least. One day my friend asked me to join him for a boxing session. At this point I was desperate I thought it might be a bad idea but my arms worked so I decided to join him. We did stretches and exercises then a few minutes of punching bags and a one to one session total of about an hour. The next day I had tingling everywhere I thought I fcked up my body but then after a few hours, no more pain! It healed like magic I couldn’t believe it. After that I realized that I was doing everything wrong and that my upper body was where I had to focus on. That one session totally cured me and I no longer have it. I go for a swim time to time to keep my body strong. Also this may sound off topic but I cut out rice because it made the pain worst while I had sciatica, I had no idea i was allergic to rice so you might want to check out allergies and go over your diet. Vitamin C (pills did nothing I mean real vitamin C from fruit like berries pineapple etc) and black seed oil really helped with the pain. Anyways I hope this comment helps I know everyone’s different but for me the key was diet and upper body exercises. Good luck!!

@@what2904 No I’m doing great! I do feel stiffness after eating rice (or gluten) so I completely avoid it now unless I’m a guest in someone’s home and they prepared food for me. I exercise 3 times a week, focusing on my upper body. Most of these videos show exercises that focus on the back or lower body that’s not where the problem is. Unfortunately there’s not much information online and I felt lost and miserable so I hope this info could help some people. Sciatica could be caused by many things, deficiencies, allergies, weight gain, weak muscles (upper body), bad/unbalanced posture (from weak muscles) even parasites. Going to a chiropractor is useless because it’s only temporary you have to build muscles to support posture or it does nothing. It’s ridiculous how the medical community approaches the issue, and so many could avoid getting surgery that could make things worst. For supplements I’ll like to add and recommend MSM flakes it’s amazing stuff even for pets. Really helps with muscle stiffness joints bones allergies etc. I take it with lemon water in the morning or before bed. Hope this helps!

About 20 years ago, I had herniated disc that was causing me sciatic pain. A combination of a nerve block and doing a series of the Mackenzie exercises allowed my disc to go back in place. To me it was a miracle, because the exercises were very simple. Some of them were basically laying on the floor with a pillow in a certain position.

Also to those who may not be getting some results.... Ive studied a lot myself. The disc is mostly water.. So, dehydration is one of the causes of a bulging disc. So, guzzle some and watch it return easier... Most people drink no water that is (just water) its always mixed into something that is usually also a diuretic. So, this isnt water, water is water, hydration is from water only usually. I found moving back to plain water helped a lot.

The popping of the ball shifting back into the disc space has clearly worked ...this very evening in m now in 95% less pain !! I've struggled for years . It's working for me ...I'm the proof !! I meant to post this a couple of years ago when it happened, but you guys' videos on the McKenzie method actually helped me evade a lumbar fusion at the very last minute. My back was an utter disaster (two prior microdiscectomies/laminectomies going back several years), my hip constantly felt like it just took a 16" high-explosive shell, I was at a point where I had to wear a brace _even while sleeping_, had to go to ER for "hypertensive emergency" caused by off-the-charts pain levels, etc. Even showering or just using the can was a horrific experience requiring an iron will and supreme pain tolerance. The PT I was assigned to was old-school, really addicted to traction as a treatment for whatever reason, which wasn't really helping IMO. Out of desperation I started searching YT and came across your stuff and began trying it. My fusion surgery was fully scheduled for Dec. 21, 2018, but the neurosurgeon asked for a follow-up MRI the week before to determine where the disc fragment from my sequestered hernia had migrated to so that he could fish it out during the procedure. The results came back five days before my scheduled surgery; the neuro was surprised and said he saw substantial positive changes from the original MRI the month prior, and now recommended that I skip surgery and continue w/ PT instead. I did, mostly following these exercises. I'm nowhere near 100% and have accepted I probably never will be, but I'm 10,000% better than I was at my nadir, and can fairly easily do most all of the tasks I need to do on a daily basis. Seriously, thank you for the informative and helpful vids.

5 months ago I had a herniated disc. I had pain greater than anything in my life. I was always unsure on those forms "on a scale of 1-10 how is your pain?" this was a definitive 11. It felt like someone was ripping off my right leg from my hip and fire was shooting down my leg. I would pop pain pills and just writhe in agony until the pain went away or I passed out. I had 2 epidural injections and in 6 weeks, 12 sessions of physical therapy. About a week ago my sciatica finally completely stopped and if it wasn't for this method I would not be as well off as I am today. When I was first injured I watched so many videos, read articles, and so many stories and I feel like, for what it may be worth, it's my turn. I had a ruptured L5-S1 injury August 2007 and found a therapist who had me do 200 of these pushups a day in 3 divided doses, I had my arms farther out than these guys show though. On the 8th day I felt a strange sensation after doing them but it was the disc pushing itself back into place so yes this really does work! I recently was doing a lot of work where I was kind of torquing my left side and it flared up again, didn't think it was my disc but last night did 160 of these pushups and it did help so it must be something with it. I guess that I really should do them every so often, not 200 a day but maybe 50 or so just to keep things in check.

I would say obviously take it slow very slow but I have done this 18 months and my pain is now 0 to 1 on a scale of one to 10. my only pain comes from a day of picking up tree limbs in the yard or moving a heavy box in the garage or changing a flat tire. When I must do a heavier than average lifting chore or lifting emergency then I am very susceptible to re-injuring the disc and then the sciatic nerve pain follows. I feel with my back it is a life long issue. I think I can manage the problem (maybe) but never fully recover.

I tried 10 neuros and orthos and all of them only prescribed vitamin tablets (specifically for B12 which helps repair nerves) and sleeping as much as possible. - I ignored all of them and used the pushups prescibed by these gentlemen. It is now january 2018 - I run like im a teenager again and am able to ride my motorcycle like nothing ever happened (the pain or symptoms were down to 1% by September 2017 but i was too scared to exert too much so didnt push) . the mckenzie works. thank you sirs for your channel you have actually saved me and I would love to buy you a beer someday.

I have a question. McKenzie exercises used to relieve my sciatic pain, I fixed my disc problems through them before. But 3 months ago, I had another bulging disc, had sciatic pain but this time it was different. Mackenzie exercises and back extensions made my pain worse, when I hanged from a bar to decompress it hurt more, so I didn't (and couldn't) do them. Then the pain slowly subsided, but when I extend my back I feel numbness on my thigh where sciatic pain used to occur. In fact, when I round my lower back, the numbness goes away. So it is the exact opposite of Mackenzie exercises. Before, anterior pelvic tilt and keeping my lumbar spine's curve it felt better, now I do posterior pelvic tilt and stretch my lower back and the numbness goes away. It feels so weird. Any suggestions?

@@onurbole7921 To get the best understanding of his method I recommend ordering his book "Back Mechanic" I mean you could probably scour through hours and hours of interviews on youtube and piece together the big picture yourself but the book is the easiest way. Basically to sum it up simply; remove the pain triggers, stabilize the musculature that supports the spine, stop doing things that compromise the integrity of the spine (yoga, certain lifts, moving in certain ways), he refers to the general day to day as practicing "spine hygiene" similar to looking after your teeth. Best of luck to you.

My goodness. Thank you for the explanation!!! I’ve been waking up with excruciating back pain and my chiropractor home depot taken an X-ray and said there wasn’t really any issue with herniation or anything but man it hurts and I’m thinking it’s mostly from poor posture. I also have slight scoliosis now which is new. I’m hoping this helps me!!! I don’t have sciatica but I’m going to try it anyway

I watched and did exercises on one of your other videos and even though it was painful at first, i got immediate relief from two of the exercises, now i’m able to lay on my back with minimal pain in my lower back area. i’m going to keep watching these videos and do them everyday until i’m better! thank you so so SO much for this! my PT was an amazing therapist, but you two are definitely the best PT’s on the internet 😌

ok, you guys are the greatest! I began watching for tips for my husband who has neck and back pain and carpal tunnel. But THEN! I screwed up my back a few weeks ago by being overzealous about my new year's resolution to exercise more. I knew I pushed my limits when my back began hurting so I took a week off and did only yoga. BUT! I got worse one day to the point I could hardly move and my lower back pain was horrible. My husband suggested that I could have a herniated disk, so I checked out this video and all of your other ones related. I realized that doing my yoga exercises were exasperating my condition because of the forward bending. So I began doing the MacKenzie extensions every hour during my waking day, along with using our inversion table, sitting only with lumbar support, and icing periodically. It is day 3 and I am feeling some major relief. I must be on the right regimen, so thank you so much! I realize that I have not been diagnosed, but I thought doing the MacKenzie and icing and inversion would not hurt. I wanted to give it a try and if I didn't feel different, I was heading to the chiropractor. But things are looking good today, not 100% by any means, but I am more mobile and have way less pain. I have a brand new understanding of my back and which exercises to avoid and what to do when I make a mistake. I want to extend a big virtual long distance hug to you both!

Riicho Bamin took me a couple weeks of doing it inconsistently. My problem was not nearly as bad as what it sounds like you have. About 6 months before I found this video though I had actually been almost unable to walk some days (limping and only being able to go a hundred meters before having to stop) because the pain was so bad but then I got a new and better bed than the shitty old futon I was sleeping on. That fixed most of my problem then this exercise kicked the shallow lingering problems away. If I am working out really hard for an extended period of time and am stressed with school it will start creeping back but then I just do these exercises a couple of times and it goes away. I am almost positive it has to do with something in my exercise but IDK what

I have chronic sciatica...Sometimes my back is soooo tight, but the pain isn't in the spine it is usually in the IT band and in my left foot. According to you that isn't good. Arthritis in my left knee doesn't help. And spondaliothisis (sp? L4 and L5). I am a yoga instructor and it has affected my practice and my job. I' try this and add it to my other exercises.
@douglasgillarddcprofessoro5285
You've got to be careful, however, with these McKenzie exercises! I have seen them cause a disc sequestrations before and force the patient into surgery, so they definitely are not for every type of disc herniation. Make sure you have your physical therapist or chiropractor carefully check your MRI and just don't run out and do these on your own.

Thank you, sir, for your input. But....perhaps you can answer a question for me. For the past 3 weeks, I have been enduring severe....and DO mean SEVERE (excruciating) sciatic nerve pain....'have been to a Chiropractor....studied about the subject online, but I cannot fine anyone who can tell me if this torture is permanent? I've been told to only consider surgery as a very last resort....but, as it stands now, THAT seems to be my only way to get free from this horrible PAIN!! So, Dr. Gillard, I ask you, sir...'IS' there a permanent cure for this besides surgery? If so, what? How does one cure a herniated disk?? How does one keep a h. disk OFF of the sciatic nerve to eliminate the pain....without surgery? I know you are not obligated to answer me, but....if you will, please do. My e/m addrss.is: shoofly55@gmail.com .....and in the subject box, plz put "Back pain", so I'll know it's from you. Thanks for reading this & I hope to hear from you soon. ~D.

@@kimpanella1565 awesome just remember breathing is the key here . Every breath you take will relax your body . Eventually you'll have a sudden loud crack . Also remember that tense muscles will prevent you from realigning your spine so consider visiting a massage therapist !! My girlfriend is a massage therapist in training and between her and this stretch I'm now almost completely healed .
