there was some furry matrix in the colour that simply had to be rubbed off, otherwise I would have pulled up sooner. I don't like watching gem colour go down the drain so I fully understand your sentiment.

I'm glad someone is getting good deals on opals somewhere In the world. I can never seem to get a break. I either get chipped, cracked, sandshot garbage, or the stones I order just never show up. Starting to wonder if I should just give up on opal

53Frogs on Opalauctions. Or seda opals. Out of the 5 shops I’ve tried. Those two come exactly as advertised. The others are very hit or miss on each lot. I’ve stopped shopping anywhere else except those 2 shops.

@@DefinitelyNotBlackOpalDirect Riley is a great guy. But I can never find rough I want that isn't on auction. I don't like bidding. I've bought a couple stones from the Sedawis, and have never been dissapointed. I should have been more specific. Accidentally omitted the point I was trying to make. Which was, there's a lot of sheisty stone dealers online. Wish there was something that could be done about it.

Village smithy is a great guy for opal as well. If you’re serious about buying opal you gotta start with the cheap stuff. Good luck man!

Beautiful colour. You are a patient man. Are carvings the least desirable way to go when all other options fail? and is there a ready and keen market for carvings?
@absoluteopals7262
@absoluteopals7262 2 года назад
Interesting question. For me opal carving is it's not about a back up plan for an oval cabochon failure, its about matrial conservation and maximising returns. The oval cabochon is usually my first priority when buying.This attitude is largely because of local tradition and the resulting instant local trade demand. Opal Carvings have been an increasingly impotant addition to our stock over the last 22 years. Many consumers prefer the freeform flowing carving to the regular oval cabochon as they offer a higher level of creative expression, higher potetial for value adding and often more visual affect per dollar cost because of the weight conservation. Yes there is a ready and keen market for carving, it only has to be accessed.

Well I am trying so hard to be nice here. $300.00 is a steal . You know it and so so all of us here. Everytime I see a video or read a story the vendor/cutter has ridiculous prices on opal. So either they are all pricing opal at crazy prices for entertainment purposes or these opals are actually worth what they all say? And the poor miner, the one who really is in the riskiest part of the opal trade and who happens to usually have the most overhead to deal with like fuel, maintenance and buying expensive machinery. Well he is one of the parts of this equation that takes a beating. Then there are the customers who also take a beating when paying for what the vendor sets the price at. So let's take a look at this. You paid $300.00 and from what I could see right back at the beginning was a super purchase on your behalf. Even if you just took the one area off and cut 2 stones then you had already made a killing. Tell me if I am wrong? Are the prices I see per carat real or is it just ky imagination? Please set me straight because I hear cutters and vendors all the time talk about th he risky stones they purchased. But to be quite honest I first of all prefer the specimens as they come out of the mines. I do not like cut stones. Second of all I would never pay the price that most in the Australian opal trade charge. I agree , Australian opals are the best. But like most people I have no problem purchasing opal sourced from other countries because they are at a more realistic price point for opal per carat. I just happen to believe the opal miners deserve a much more reasonable price for their hard work. Opal miners could almost be considered as working in a sweat shop. Like I said if I am at fault here with my points of view then please straighten me out and I will gladly apologize for any misconceptions.

I mine myself. This piece in the rough looked very risky and could have qiute easily have ended up in the potch and colour bucket as a lower value offcut. Sometimes you really do win and sometimes you really do loose.

$300 was needed fuel money? That sounds like a dire situation.
@absoluteopals7262
@absoluteopals7262 2 года назад
It could have easily ended as a $50 opal specimen in which case the miners would have won by $250....

People need money for fuel all the time there . Not just for there cars but the equipment they run . It can be a long time between drinks when you do a bit of opal mining . Gotta do what you gotta do

That is a beautiful knobby wowwwwy, I would love to buy something like that for 300. I'd even pay American 300 for that piece all day. Hahahha. Who am I kidding, I'm a yank, I'd pay much more for that piece of rough.
