Absolute Zero run (No Augs, No Items, No Takedowns) - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Stealthy speed run of Deus Ex: Human Revolution with no augs upgraded, no items or weapons used and no takedowns performed.
------------
RULES:
1) No augmentation upgrades aka "Factory Zero". Using of the Hacking: Capture Level 1 available by default was allowed.
2) Empty inventory throughout the whole game. No weapons of any kind and no energy or healing items either.
3) No takedowns, lethal or non-lethal (and no exception for Namir). No killing of regular enemies through any other means.
4) "Dirty" ghosting: distractions and brief detection ("alarmed" from humans or bots and "suspicious" from cameras) were allowed as long as no one got hostile and I received Ghost and Smooth Operator bonuses.
5) "Give me Deus Ex" difficulty.
SPECIFICS:
1) Physics glitches were allowed. The clipping glitch was used twice: for Fedorova's fight (mandatory) and Hyron project (unavoidable under "no detection" rule). "Fire extinguisher landing system" (TM) was used several times for fun and giggles.
2) Using physical objects (crates, fire extinguishers, explosive barrels) to deal damage was allowed.
3) For my own personal amusement I tried to lead as many story characters to their demise as I could -- without killing them directly, of course.
EXCEPTIONS:
1) I missed 1 Ghost bonus because of the bots in the TYM hangar. Avoidable, but would require ~90 minutes of throwing a crate / hiding from a bot for 30 seconds / repeating. Letting the bots see me allowed to do complete this section in about 10 minutes.
2) I had to lower difficulty to "Tell me a story" for the fight with Yelena Fedorova. Technically it is possible to defeat her on "Give me Deus Ex" difficulty with the same strategy I used in the video, but that would take 2-3 hours instead of 5 minutes, because her health points are almost doubled on GMDE. And hitting her with a crate does veeeery little damage (like 1/50th of a single hit from a stun gun). I decided that she wasn't worth my time.

Number one rule of Deus Ex Human Revolution: There is always another way. Dont have high enough hacking skills to get past a door? Theres probably a ventilation shaft around here somewhere. Dont have any items or augs at all? Just grab the closest companion cube and youre set for life.

@LOUIS11233333: There is an exploit in the original version of the game that allows you to instantly knock out Namir with a single takedown: Deus Ex: HR - Namir Boss Fight [No Bullets] [One Punch] [Hardest Difficulty] I wanted to avoid using it (even though it makes the fight with him significantly easier) and find another way to beat him.

You know whats interesting ? The opening section in the Sarif HQ feels pretty scripted if you first play the game. Pretty much like your everyday shooter. But seeing this, it kinda baffles me that you can find routes to sneek past these enemy waves, and that they are indeed not scripted. Now i feel bad for playing that part guns blazing.
@chrism3611
@chrism3611 9 лет назад
their patrols are scripted if they don't see jensen they do the same things over and over.
@MaverickHunterXZA
@MaverickHunterXZA 9 лет назад
Chris M Sure, but thats not what i meant. The whole section is layed out as a confrontation. From the setpieces to enemy placement, everything is aimed towards direct combat. And yet, enemys spawn without the knowledge of where or "if" you are there. You trigger their spawn by entering the room, they could have very well been spawned while aggro by default.

Don't beat yourself up for your play style. The Deus Ex franchise is built around giving players freedom and options. Wanna go in like a Terminator and slaughter everyone? That's cool. Wanna be the sneaky guy and ghost your way to the end? That's cool too. Want to do some kind of mix? Why not, it's your call. You played it once and slaughtered lots of people. Reinstall and play it again, just find a different way. That's what makes it such a great game.

I originally played this through a few times back when it 1st came out & I never saw this kind of run done for this. MOST IMPRESSIVE! Granted the A.I isn't the brightest tool in the box here but still, you gave it a nice touch for a "don't harm civilians" objective quite gracefully. Really shocked me a few times where I thought for sure they'd seen you & how you slipped past guard inches from them when you'd make noise n swivel around them..KUDOS! Best thing ever though, your trademark fire extinguisher jumps to nullify dmg..epic tip. Shame that didn't unlock something awesome/secret. Still stopped me from playing the rest of the night to watch this video n be left jaw dropped @ how smooth n easy you made it look, specially the bosses. Can't wait for the sequel coming out. Joygasm!

This is the best game I have ever played. I had asked you about your most favourite stealth game before, and "Thief" was your answer. I haven't gotten my hands on Thief, so I have to say this is my most favourite game thus far. Thanks for taking the gameplay onto a whole new level, it is really amusing to watch. :D Are you going to replay this game without any restriction like DTD-only? I'd like to see which augmentations you think are necessary, and in what sequence you unlock and upgrade them. For me, I like augmentations which enhance Jensen's fistfight, hacking, weight-lifting/wall-breaking, and aiming capabilities. I also pump points into inventory expansion to carry more useful items and weapons (though tranquilizer rifle and stun gun are more than enough), Typhoon for overpowering bosses, and Icarus for cushioning falls. Noxious gas tolerance, enemy radar, and EMP resistance are essential upgrades, too. The rest are all optional.

Arius Spaxxor I have no plans for replaying the game. I thought about recording a playthrough showing how to acquire every available aug by the end of the game after doing this run, but it would have been too long for my tastes (50-60 hours), so I decided against it. Besides, this guy had already done it by then: ru-vid.com/group/PLCF1A02384A34BB46 If you are intersted in my build for a completitionist/DTD-focused playthrough I talked about it here: deusex.wikia.com/wiki/Experience_by_area_(DX3)#Augmentations_build

+Neuralhub Spaxxor Thief: The Dark Project was the father of the modern "stealth" genre of games. I want to say it came out in 1998. Thief 2: The Metal Age around 2000 is still somewhat playable on a modern computer. Two of the best pure stealth games ever made. Probably the first games that rewarded the player for not killing opponents and even forbidding it at higher difficulty levels.

It's impressive how it takes controls away from you at 1:22:17 (waiting for you to Accept/Decline uploading the data) right as you are flying downstairs on top of a fire extinguisher - and yet you land and walk away as if nothing happened. I also like how the 'adopted crate' you kill Fedorova with says "Handle with care" on one of its sides. Cute huh? :P I wonder what's up with the thug behind you not seeing you at all at 1:34:22?

Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope it didn't dissuade you from trying something like this on your own, though. Try this kind of run in some other game -- it can be a lot of fun coming up with non-standard solutions to standard problems. As for the guy at 1:34:22 -- he was asleep, that's why he didn't react to me, just as the other guy on the couch at 1:34:40. They would ignore you unless you wake them up with a noise.

Man, I'm seeing sides of this game I never saw before. I always went straight for the emotion-manipulation aug ASAP and used it for every possible encounter. Weird to see things play out late-game a bit differently than I'm used to. A great playthrough and amazing skill! You make me look like a chump trying and failing to go unnoticed by guards; you manipulate them like puppets.

A huge part of these videos was the commentary aspect written by Prenatual in his annotations. Since RU-vid disabled them, that aspect of the videos is gone. However, if you have FireFox, you can download an extension that searches a database with 1.4 billion videos worth of annotations archived, and this video is one of them. Here's the extension: tech234a.bitbucket.io/AnnotationsReloaded/ And if you're interested in the project, you can read about it here (it also links to the extension, so you don't have to worry about me linking you a virus or something): www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/b7imx9/youtube_annotation_archive_annotation_data_from/

Thane Krios It's a plush lion toy from Human Revolution. You can find several of them throughout the game. This one is from van Bruggen's apartment (I visit it at 34:10 in this video) and it has a not-so-well-hidden red button in its belly that opens a door when you press it.

This was one of the most amazing speedruns I have ever seen! Are you a member of SDA or have you ever played during an AGDQ/SGDQ? If not, I think being a part of that community can help get you more of the audience I feel you deserve
@prenatual
@prenatual 9 лет назад
Mayer Yedid I have an SDA account, but I haven't posted there in years and I never participated in AGDQ events - mostly because we have a rather different interpretations of what "speedrun" means. For those guys the completion time is #1 goal and they are ready to sacrifice everything to improve it, even if it makes their videos boring to watch. While for me "speedrun" just means doing things efficiently and elegantly. Spending countless hours optimizing routes or finding new glitches that let you skip parts of the game is not what I consider fun. Plus, if I see an opportunity to do something weird/challenging I want to be able to do it, without having to worry about how long it would take. With a few exceptions (like my Batman videos), the completion time is usually my last concern. More than anything, it is just a way to advertise what I'm trying to do here. I am mostly interested in playing games at the highest possible difficulty or showing how to solve challenges in interesting ways under extreme restrictions, but I'm not sure how to better communicate these concepts. So I'm stuck using the word "speedrun" because this is something that most people understand. As for reaching a wider audience, you are overestimating what the sites can do, believe me. 2-3 years ago I tried sharing my videos on various forums (SDA included), but then, looking at my views statistics, I'd noticed that their contribution ended up being very small. At most it was about 5%, and usually much less that. Ignoring the the subscribers, the absolute majority of new views was coming (and still comes) from the youtube/google searches and when people click on the related videos on the sidebar. Take this video, for example. I posted it on SDA: forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/deus_ex_human_revolution___no_augs_no_items_no_takedowns_ghost_speedrun_233302.html - but I've only got 150 views from them in total since 2012, and people on there criticized me for doing things the "wrong" way, like not skipping conversations or hacking the devices instead of using codes. I also wasted several minutes getting to Sarif and Taggart at end of the video since I haven't seen anybody do it stealthily without the use of augs, and things like that are a big no-no for speedrunners. So this is why I stopped caring about reaching that crowd. And anyway, as far as I'm aware, my channel is already one of the biggest when it comes to stealth games and everyone who knows how to use RU-vid's search function can find me if they want to.
@ChubbsRN
@ChubbsRN 9 лет назад
***** That's a very fair point; it is hard to label exactly what you were aiming for. I suppose you could call it a "challenge speedrun" At the end of the day everyone's got their own interpretation. You were also right about me overestimating the speedrun sites. In retrospect, if someone takes the time to see how many subs/views speedrunners get on YT and Twitch, many of them have very low numbers.
@prenatual
@prenatual 9 лет назад
Mayer Yedid I did try adding the word "challenge" to tags and descriptions on a few of my videos, but as it turned out there are two problems with it: 1) No one actually uses the term "challenge" when searching for videos. If RU-vid's analytic reports to be believed, most people just type the game's name + the name of a mission they are looking for, and about 30-40% add the words "speedrun" or "stealth" to that. Very few write more elaborate search queries. 2) Some games (like Absolution) have their own in-game challenges (like "kill 10 enemies with a screwdriver") and when you also refer to an entirely different thing (self-imposed rules) as a "challenge" that gets people confused. So, not an ideal solution, unfortunately. Although if you have some other ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears.
@ChubbsRN
@ChubbsRN 9 лет назад
***** Maybe you can get your followers involved in a run plan. For example: There's a RU-vidr/Twitch stream named Lobos Jr. If you're not familiar with him, he does and has done a large variety of challenge runs in Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. Many of these challenge ideas are suggested and developed between himself and his followers. Not only do the new challenges help keep the games fresh and exciting, but it also adds a layer of fun from community involvement. Now I know you don't bother doing runs that have already been done before by others on youtube, and I'm not familiar with what you do outside youtube so at the end of the day it might not be worth your time, but maybe you can survey your followers for some interesting challenge/handicap runs. If feedback is large enough and original enough then it might be worth a try. Are there any challenge run ideas you've wanted to try out in the past but haven't?
@prenatual
@prenatual 9 лет назад
Mayer Yedid I could see how the democratic system might work for someone like Lobos, who basically threats playing Dark Souls as his job, and who has probably truly ran out of ideas after beating these games dozens of times. Besides, he makes money off his twitch channel, so it makes sense for him to involve the community as much as possible, whether he likes it or not, since it directly transforms into donations and paid subscriptions. But for me this system would be a bad fit. I do all this stuff for my own enjoyment and without any monetary compensation, so I'm not really concerned about pleasing people. I already have well-defined preferences of how like to play games and I only care about advertising these preferences clearly to others. And anyway, I usually have enough patience for one playthrough only. I can't imagine doing a 2nd playthrough (never mind a 3rd or 4th) for any of the games I have on my channel that would be sufficiently different from what I've already done and equally fun. DXHR was a lone exception in this regard. With that said, there is actually one idea that I wanted to try out for a few years and that is very similar to what you are proposing, but I just couldn't find the appropriate game for it. What I want to try is to complete each mission on a *single* playthrough in several distinct styles of stealth by combining different handicaps and using different gear. Lethal or nonlethal, using close-quarter or long-range weaponry, with or without distractions, and so on. Maybe also give a catchy name to each style, sort of like Hitman: Blood Money did: archive.hitmanforum.com/index.php/topic/31761-blood-money-ratings-collection/ I may prepare a short list of styles, ask people to provide their own suggestions and then decide what to go with. If I'd like the suggestions I'll use them, if not, I will stick to my own list. Of course, I wouldn't want to do this for *every* game I play, but as a one-time thing it could be fun. I hope I would be able to do this in The Phantom Pain, but until I play the game it's impossible to say if it can support this kind of approach. We'll see.

@prenatual
@prenatual 9 лет назад
rautamiekka About 35 minutes. I cut ~4 minutes from the intro, ~2 minutes from when I was waiting for the funicular, ~5 minutes from the fight with the bots in TYM, ~17 minutes from the fight with Namir. Plus a few other places, mostly conversations or when I was breaking through weak walls with crates.

When you think about it, jensen does not once go home to sleep, sign off for the day or something else that reflects that Jensen is an everyday man. All content of the game consist of a linear stream of quests and tasks that you must solve. It makes Jensen unfamiliar to me and he ends up being a identity-less robot than some cyborg. Main point is that it breaks the immersion quite a bit since it makes the world and protagonist feel unnatural and rigid.

+Niko D Can you name a game where you have to eat, sleep, drink, take a shower, take a piss, take a dump? AFAIK Fallout:NW came closest with that you need to do first 3 thinks. Anyway, Jensen can sleep during his travels (to china and back). And some animations skip time, so he presumably had a time to take a leak, shower and sleep.
@cakemaster10
@cakemaster10 8 лет назад
+Malisman77 I'm not trying to say I want to see Jensen take a piss, haha, I meant that his character is not that well built. I love the opening sequence of Deus Ex because it gives us some insight in Adam's relationship with Megan Reed and the story about how he became augmented and all that. But after the opening sequence his character development is left as it is and then the linear stream of quests start and he just follows this stream like a robot. Afterwards it's all about Sarif Industries and job-assignments. It doesn't really return to Adam's character later on - only slightly in the shape of player-choices and boss-fights against Megan Reed's murderers. Player-choices can't make his character alone though, as that would place him in some kind of gray area. Fallout 3 does the same thing. It has a character-building opening sequence. After the opening sequence it's a linear stream of quests, but Fallout 3 somehow makes up for it with its vast amount of features and its open world. Deus Ex does not have the features or is open-world enough to make up for it. In the end this whole argument may come down to personal opinion, so maybe none of us will be "right".
