I had seen the tv series prior so the plot wasn't quite as bonkers as it might seem. They had a handful of time travel episodes, including a couple to the then current time of the late 60s.
So when did he go to Tarsus 4? (Conscience of the King)Maybe he finished 'highschool ' there and after that went 'south' returned to Earth and entered The Academy. I don't think O'Reilly and Kirk knew each other then but in my mind Kirk was the serious older brother and Kevin and Kirk's younger brother, George, hung out together getting into wacky adventures. I know, who said G.S. Kirk was younger? I'm just having fun. P.s. Since Shatner played both I assume they were twins but identical siblings can be born years apart also.
The moment when Spock said, "Mr. President, I stand with my shipmates" is my favorite moment in Star Trek. In just seven words, Spock told you everything you needed to know about his character.
This film was extremely well received by critics and audiences when first released. The risky plot was so well executed, and audiences were definitely ready for a less-dramatic offering.
Such a fun movie. It's wonderful to see the new generations enjoying Star Trek...whether they stumble on it by accident or give it a try. I started watching Trek not long after this movie as kid and never looked back! Enjoy the ride and help keep this magnificent franchise alive for decades to come.
The Enterprise was the very first vessel to be given a letter suffix, as a testament to her legendary legacy. Starfleet only gives them to ships of historical significance. The only other vessel to be given a letter suffix in the canon universe is the U.S.S. Voyager, which by the 32nd century is on it's 11th successor. (NCC-74656-J)
Correct. Fandom speculates two possibilities; the disabled USS Yorktown mentioned at the beginning of the film, or the USS "Ti-Ho", mentioned in a book called " Mr. Scott's Guide To The Enterprise" released right after the film's opening. It posits that Ti-Ho was a new build, and the first Constitution Class Starship equipped with Transwarp Drive capabilities like the USS Excelsior.
I saw all the Trek movies in the theatre, and this by far had the best audience reaction. The production, story, and attention to detail were over the top. If you haven't seen TOS, then check out the episode "Journey to Babel' to see how well they connected some of the story to Trek's past.
15.42 The famous punk-on-the-bus scene. The punk in question is Kirk Thatcher who was Leonard Nimoy's assistant on this movie making a cameo appearance. He also composed and sings the song on the ghetto blaster.
@@WillTalksMovies He apparently asked Nimoy directly if he could do that scene and the bus sequence apparently took 3 days to shoot driving about in a bus. They had to remove seats etc every time they needed to switch perspectives with the camera.
Leonard Nimoy had planned to use music from a 'contemporary' band like Duran Duran, but Thatcher told him that was not 'true' Punk Rock. He was a member of a Punk Rock band, and told Nimoy that he could come up with something better. He got together with the Sound Editor and another staff member, got the cheapest Microphone setup available, and recorded the song in the corridor of their Office. Thatcher distilled down the most basic tenets of Punk Rock which was "I Hate You"... hence the Title of the Song. The full version is available here on RU-vid.
The Voyage Home is definitely a huge breather after the intense drama and heart-wrenching emotion of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock. Its "save the whales" message really resonated when it was released in the mid-80s, too, and likely had an impact on public opinion and visibility for the issue. Humpback whales, once on the brink of extinction, have rebounded hugely in population and are now classified as "least concern" conservation status. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is, in my opinion, a kind of coda to the trilogy of II-III-IV. (You'll probably see what I mean when you watch it.) The Undiscovered Country is my personal favorite of the TOS films, and possibly all the Star Trek films.

I had my first date in high school taking a girl to see this movie. (It didn't work out, even though we were both geeks of a feather in other ways). While the movie was cheesy, it actually had a lasting environmental effect on the planet. Because of the attention to the plight of humpback whales that this movie created in the late 1980s, people responded around the world by backing international laws and environmental protections. As a result, the hunting of humpback whales has been drastically limited or reduced in several areas and the population of these creatures has dramatically rebounded since this film. So... weird topic, but incredible environmental impact. One of the many social and global legacies of the Star Trek franchise.
In the Original Series Episodes "Tomorrow is Yesterday" and "Assignment: Earth" involved time travel using the slingshot used here. They also time traveled in "City on the Edge of Forever". It's said that Kirk and crew were supposed to get the Excelsior but that fans at the time didn't like the design so the original model was used. They had a spot where Sulu was supposed to meet an relative as a child but ran out of time for the shoot because the kid was nervous. And no Gillian Taylor is not Carol Marcus.
@@shallowgal462 Yes, at the end of "The Naked Time" as a result of a cold-restart of the warp engines with a controlled matter-antimatter implosion in balanced engines, the Enterprise is sent back in time by 3 days. In Star Trek the Animated Series (TAS), there are several episodes involving time travel or alterations of time. In the TAS episode "Yesteryear" the Guardian of Forever time portal is used again twice, making three times in total. In this episode, the time portal is used on purpose by time travelers Kirk, Spock and Erickson to explore the history of Orion. When the three return, McCoy, who is waiting in front of the Guardian, doesn't recognize Spock. The first officer of the Enterprise is an Andorian named Thelin in his timeline. It turns out that young Spock was killed on Vulcan during the kahs-wan ritual. In the original timeline, Spock's cousin Selek would have been there to save his life. Spock has only a faint memory of those events, but he realizes that Selek must have been he himself at an older age. Therefore, Spock uses the time portal to travel back in time to save his younger self. In the TAS episode "Time Trap" during a battle the Enterprise and the Klingon cruiser Klothos are caught in the Delta Triangle, which is described as a different time continuum. Spock calls the phenomenon "another place in time." At the end of the episode, they escape and apparently arrive just where and when they started. In the TAS episode "The Slaver Weapon" time stands still inside a stasis box built by the Slavers, thereby allowing "travel" to the future without aging. In another TAS episode, Kirk and Spock join a secret team that sets out to retrieve the "Soul of Skorr". When they are beamed up to the ship again, they learn that they were gone for just two minutes. In the TAS episode "The Counter-Clock Incident" time runs backward in the negative universe that the Enterprise enters, but only selectively; the temporal direction of aging processes and of clocks is reversed, whereas in all other regards causality still works as in our universe.
I remember my mom taking me to this in the theater. You have to remember, the 80’s were a weird, crazy, fun and fearful time. Today kids practice shooting drills in school, we practiced hiding from nuclear war. Economy sucked and people were craving a good time. This was one of those good times.
Another of my favorite Star Trek movies. When I was growing up, movie trilogies were the new trend. So, I've always regarded Star Treks 2,3 and 4--"The Genesis Trilogy", as you had mentioned--as an important movie trilogy in my childhood as the original Star Wars trilogy, the Back To The Future trilogy, The Godfather trilogy and even the first three Indiana Jones movies. I remember when ST4 came out, critics and fans had all raved in their reviews, saying how good it was...even Siskel & Ebert gave it 2 thumbs-up. I remember a few months later when this movie premiered in the little town I grew up in and when my family went to go see it, everybody in town was there at the theater, even people i knew who didn't even like Star Trek (they had heard how good the movie was that they all had to go see it, too)! It was great because as I remember it, it seemed as if the franchise was starting to gain the success and popularity that I had always felt it deserved. This movie was so much fun, everyone in the theatre laughed at all the funny scenes. And when Scotty said, "There be whales here!" a huge cheer went up from all of us. Back in 1986, this movie was the perfect cherry on top of the 20th Anniversary of this franchise. It was so successful that a few months later, the announcement came that there would be a new TV show entering into production--Star Trek: The Next Generation! But this was such an exciting time for me. I was so excited a couple years later when Star Trek 5 came out... which was a fun movie, maybe not quite as good, but the character scenes, especially involving Kirk, Spock and McCoy make the next film worth the price of admission...

"Captain - there be whales here..." Great seeing a '7th Heaven' cameo by Catherine Hicks (Dr. Gillian Taylor) in this film. Think she was only in one of the Chucky films as well but I thoroughly enjoyed her here. Her co-star on that long running TV show; Stephen Collins also starred in Trek. He was Commander Decker in The Motion Picture. Love how the crew's able to determine at what point in Earth's history they're in by the level of pollution and "how futzed-up the planet is". Good to know we're progressing... 🌏 Great review!
Catherine had a little more than a cameo in this movie. She had a fairly major role in the film. You are also correct that Catherine Hicks was also the mom in the first Child's Play (Chucky movie) from back in 1988.
This probe was definitely one of the most powerful enemies the Federation had ever encountered. It rendered the Federation helpless and almost destroy the planet not even the Borg had power like that. The time travel part is genius and only a year after BTTF time travel was in for movies.
"Star Trek IV": Save the Whales! This movie allowed all of the bridge crew something to do, from flying "an antique helicopter" to collecting neutrons from the "U.S.S. Enterprise," to revealing Transparent Aluminum. A great time was had in 1986 San Francisco, complete with a Faux Punk song, "I Hate You.";)
Transparent aluminum is real, and it's marketed under the name "Alon". They're developing it as lighter form of bulletproof glass. I'm hoping it will become cheap enough to use as a smartphone screen one day. When we first see Spock in this movie, he's standing on "Kirk's Rock", which is part of the Vasquez Rocks park near Los Angeles. The punk on the bus, that actor's name is Kirk! Kirk Thatcher. He's a versatile guy! He's an Emmy award winning writer and producer, and he worked on special creature effects on Star Wars Episode VI "Return of the Jedi". He reprises this role in the Picard series, and he actually speaks. They would not be frolicking in the water like at the end of the movie. On a warm summer day, the water temperature in San Francisco Bay is around 60 degrees F. (15.6 degrees C.) This movie was inspired by an actual 1985 event, where a humpback whale got stranded in one of the rivers that feeds San Francisco Bay. Humphrey the Whale found himself near the city of Rio Vista where the fresh water habitat became life-threatening. They eventually lured him back to the bay by playing recorded sounds of humpbacks feeding. In 1990 he spent some time in the bay, and needed rescue after became beached south of Candlestick Point. When Chekov said he "found it, under US Government", the implication was that he leafed through the White Pages alphabetically from A to U, which is how the real phone book was arranged. The famous Yellow Pages followed the White Pages. When Chekov found a nuclear wessel and called it "The Enterprise", he was referring to the US aircraft carrier Enterprise, which was NOT stationed in Alameda. Parts of the movie were filmed on location in the streets of San Francisco. Right before Scotty, McCoy, and Sulu found the Yellow Pages sign, Sulu looked in the window of bar where, at 11am, some hard core alcoholics were hanging out. They knew the production was filming, and when George looked in, a rather well endowed woman flashed her chest at him. He walked away smiling. The woman who spoke with Chekov and Uhura right after the police officer was a random bystander. They liked the spontaneity of the scene so much that they chased her down to compensate her for speaking a line in the movie. I imagine she got a membership in the Screen Actor's Guild out of that, too.
I believe they filmed the shot with the crew in the water in the Paramount Pictures parking lot. They built a tank with the mock-up of the Klingon ship. I distinctly remember seeing a feature on this on Entertainment Tonight when it was filmed.
That split finger hand sign came from Nimoy - who peaked when the congregation is supposed to bow their hesd while the rabbi gives his blessing. It represents the Hebrew letter shin.
FUN FACT: The woman who stopped and told Chekov and Uhura where the "Nuclear Wessles" were (Alameda), wasn't an actress, she was just passing through and helping a tourist with directions. It took a minute before the director and crew realized that she's not part of the movie, needless to say everyone freaked out and ran her down to get her signed. Scottie (Doohan) said he just got a boat, that is doubtful in real life as he was part of the Normandy D-Day Invasion and was wounded.

the Aircraft carrier that they actually filmed on was the U.S.S. Ranger. The Enterprise had such a recognizable bridge/tower that even when I saw this in theaters when I was nine, I knew it wasn't the Enterprise.
George and Gracie refer to an actor married couple named George Burns and Gracie Allen who were huge stars back in the day. George Burns in his later years was well known for playing God in the Oh God! movies in the 80s and they were funny.
This was the first Star Trek I had ever seen, when I was 6 years old. For my money, I call this the best possible introduction I could have had. It captured my soul and made me an instant life long fan. Now at 42 years old... It is still my favorite
I'm pretty sure this was also the first Star Trek movie I saw in theaters; I turned 8 the day after it was released. Since I was only 5 1/2 when Search for Spock was released, it’s POSSIBLE (but unlikely) that I saw that in theaters.
At the time this was released, I had a friend who was LDS (Mormon). He said that among them "he had a little too much LDS" was considered a hilarious line. But even better, the film was released in the Soviet Union, with dubbing. Kirk says they are going to look for humpbacks and Scotty asks "people?". In Russian, the word for humpback is gorbach. And who was the Soviet premier at that time? Gorbachev! The translation had them rolling in the aisles.
There was a moment in the original script that wasn't filmed that told us that Saavik stayed on Vulcan b/c she was pregnant with Spock's child. In another note, that wasn't actually the aircraft carrier Enterprise, it was the USS Ranger, standing in for its sister ship. Also, in the original script, Scotty flat out says that transparent aluminum was invented by that corporation.
The Marines and Sailors seen on the carrier during the chase scene with Chekov were the real crew of the USS _Ranger._ (They didn't even change out their ball caps! ) They receive a note of gratitude in the closing credits for the film.
The USS RANGER aircraft carrier, and the USS ENTERPRISE aircraft carrier. The two aircraft carriers being Nimitz-class aircraft carriers look practically identical so one could double for the other as part of the same class.
Ew. In the book, Spock rescued a child Saavik from that planet and then became her guardian and funded her education on Vulcan while he was on the Enterprise.
@@couch.patati-patata The Spock that fathered the child with Saavik was the Genesis re-generated Spock with whom Saavik copulated in order to save his life during his first Pon Farr on the Genesis planet in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, resulting in her pregnancy. That Spock had no memory of his previous relationship with Saavik since he did not yet have his katra, and it was Saavik that initiated the coupling since that Spock did not even know what was happening to him because he had never previously experienced the Pon Farr.
This one was magical in that it satisfied the hard core fan as well as the general audience. It really was a heady time as a Trek fan. This same year Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered.
Unless anyone else hasn't mentioned it the new ENTERPRISE at the end looks very much like the ENTERPIRSE that we and the crew remembers is because she is another Refit Constitution-class (Constitution II-class) starship. If I'm not mistaken this Refit Constitution-class starship was meant to be the new USS YORKTOWN. Notice the ship registry on the hull: NCC - 1701 - A. Now begins the extra letter in the ENTERPRISE registries indicating succession which will be continued over the next 80 to 90 years to TNG with the Galaxy-class starship USS ENTERPRISE NCC - 1701 - D. The original USS ENTERPRISE (Constitution-class) starship NCC - 1701 had no extra letter of succession in the registry. The Constitution II-class or refit Constitution-class starship is basically a second generation of the Constitution-class of starship owned by The UNITED FEDERATION of PLANETS and operated by the UF military known as Starfleet.
This is the ONLY ship where the extra letter makes sense, because it is of the same hull type. They should never have made it a thing with other ship classes If anything, the -01 should have been the iconic standard, giving the name Enterprise to the first ship of a classes production line. The Excelsior-class Enterprise being NCC-2001, or the Ambassador-class Enterprise being NCC-10501 and so on It would also fit with the NX-01 as well quite nicely
@@k1productions87 Well, I don't think it was intentional concerning the old Constitution-class because the Constitution II-class (refit Constitution-class) came about as a result of Star Trek: TMP in 1979 because Paramount made a decision to just do a major refit of the original Constitution Enterprise but keep the basic design elements movie goers would remember of the Constitution-class from the TOS TV series. That being said the Constitution II was such a major refit of the class that every system of the starship received major upgrades which essentially made it an almost completely new ship and design. For example, the primary hull (saucer section) was actually enlarged. Bottom line is I think Paramount wanted to evoke a sense of nostalgia with the audience that they would remember from the series especially since Paramount had released TOS in syndication at that point even when TMP was in theaters.

It makes zero sense however to have the first other Excelsior we see not have the 2000s' registry (and even less sense when they stuck a bunch of extra stuff to the model, to make it look more advanced than the ones we'll see 80 years later...)
Enterprise was the name of an American submarine. There was a space shuttle also named Enterprise which the actors were invited to the first launch of at NASA. The American space program and the series were very friendly and supported each other.
I saw this movie in a theater in Hayward, California which is about 35 minutes from San Francisco. So, this movie was special for all of us cause it takes place where we live. When that lady on the street tells Chekov the vessels are across the Bay in Alameda everyone roared with laughter. There probably was a Sailor or Marine from the base in the audience as Alameda was a big base at the time. Then, when the crew beamed out of the elevator into GG park everyone clapped in applause.
Some fun facts: The street conversations were all encounters with people who were not employed by the film. The actors had their lines, and then just talked to anyone who was around. That cop that stared at Chekov when he asked about the "nuclear wessels"? Yeah, that was a real cop. It was all filmed with long lenses, so people didn't know they were being filmed, and the film AD would catch up with them after the take and get them to sign a release. The horrible punk with the loud music was played by Kirk Thatcher, one of the producers. He also wrote the song "I Hate You" that was playing on the boombox. (Spock did not break his neck, but used the Vulcan nerve pinch, something Leonard Nimoy came up with during the filming of the original TV series.) The "Cetacean Institute" is actually the Monterey Bay Aquarium, about 100 miles south of San Francisco. (A lovely place; I've been there several times. They have a huge deep-sea tank, as well as otters, jellyfish, and other animals. Sadly, no whales. You can't keep whales in captivity.) The soldiers chasing Chekov were real guys. Walter Koenig says he was terrified of them because they were very intense, and were really catching up to him. And no, that's not Carol Marcus. Gillian never appeared again as a character; apparently she had her hands full learning and then working with George and Gracie (who were named for George Burns and Gracie Allen, a legendary married comedy duo of the 20th century). You may not believe it, but there's only one shot in this entire movie that contains actual whales: the long shot near the end of a whale breaching in the sunlight. Every other shot was puppets, either miniatures or life-size, such as the tail that slaps the water as it passes Kirk and Spock. In fact, the effects were so good that _animal rights organizations_ were threatening Paramount with legal action regarding the treatment of the whales! (I love the detail of the probe imitating the posture of the whales in the water when it starts to talk to them. It's always made me wonder if the people who sent the probe were similar to the whales they had made friends with.) Starfleet did not build a new ship, but took one of the Constellation class ships, revamped and renamed it in order to give the crew a new home. I did get to see this in theaters, and it was a magnificent experience. The audience loved it; there was a standing ovation when it ended. This is the most popular of all the Star Trek movies, and the only one to crack the Top Ten box office when it was released. And man, I just love the soundtrack to this one. It's celebratory, nautical, and all-around jaunty. Just right!
@@WillTalksMovies The aircraft carrier featured in the film is in fact the U.S.S. Ranger (CV-61) which stood in for the Enterprise (CVN-65). Both ships have since been decommissioned and scrapped.
Yep, I saw The Voyage Home multiple times in theatres. Love it. This was a huge hit at the time grossing substantially more money than the previous films having real crossover appeal. The new Enterprise NCC-1701-A is obviously the same movie model reused while in universe I think it was previously the USS Yorktown which was rechristened Enterprise for Kirk.

In the original series yesterday is tomorrow. They experienced the time travel thing where they did a slingshot around the Sun and went back in time. Another episode. Oh my gosh I can't remember which one it was. Oh it was the naked time the naked time they had to escape the planet that was exploding and they went so fast. They went back in time 3 days. So there are precedents in the original series where they went back in time. So this is something that everyone who's watching this who was a Star Trek fan was able to accept.
They time traveled a few times in the original series. Once by mistake, another time via an alien device, and once again on purpose, for a mission. The method used here is consistent with what they discovered during the series: picking up speed around the sun in a way that exceeds normal warp speed.
At the time, there was a slow recognition that man could be doing some damage to the planet and to various species on earth being put at risk due to our actions. This movie effectively joined the discussion at that time, backed up by a firm but light-hearted story. Definitely an enjoyable one to watch.
The guards are so funny when they come out with chickov and they're like well. You went in with a she and you came out with a he and Kirk says one little mistake. These days OMG that would not fly. LOL
Of course I saw it in the theater! And on home video, etc. This is fun throughout, but does carry an environmental message that they were serious about, especially Nimoy. "Save the whales" got a boost from this movie's popularity. Yeah, don't drive species to extinction or there could be bad unforeseeable consequences. They did have fun with the Russian asking about Navy ships, Scotty treating the 1986 computer as he did those of his own time, the glasses and cultural trappings. Everybody did important things in this story, Spock grew back into his old self, the mission was a success and Kirk and crew saved the world. Oh yeah, that was the famous Vulcan nerve pinch that rendered the punk rocker unconscious. Same move from when Spock did his unauthorized EVA in the first movie, no neck breaking. Also, time travel does happen occasionally in the Star Trek franchise, from a variety of causes and with a lot of interesting twists. There are interdimensional adventures in parallel universes too. The probe and the aliens behind it were intentionally left a mystery. Really, we don't need those answers for the story to work so we can fill in the blanks any way we want.
I watched this movie in the theater when, it was new with my, at the time girlfriend. For me, the center point of this movie has always been ... mankind needs to do all that it can to keep any species from being threaten, endangered, or God forbid going extinct ... because, you my lose the very thing, you need to save all of humanity. Which, is a vital message as well as, a timeless warning (smile...smile).
I wish that RU-vid would let me upload a picture I have. I found about 6 months after the movie came out. I was at a dollar store and I found only one print one picture. It was framed. It was gorgeous and it was up two humpback whales going through the Stars and into the ocean. I bought that thing in a heartbeat. I still have it. It's gorgeous and I don't know if it's one of a kind or anything. But it's a beautiful picture and it reminds me of this movie.

Do you know it’s really cool? The whales ain’t real they’re 3 foot remote control models. The footage was so convincing at the time that the federal government had a check up on them because they thought they were harassing the real whales at sea.
This was a big hit. Bigger than Wrath of Khan or Search for Spock (it didn't make more than than the first film, but that film was way over budget ). It was seen as the first Trek film to appeal to general audiences that weren't necessarily Trek fans. It was a throw back to some of the more light hearted episodes of the original series (like "I,Mudd", "A Piece of the Action", or "Tomorrow is Yesterday"). It the only Trek film that doesn't include some sort of space battle (the first film began with the Klingons vs V'Ger).

If I recall the explanation they gave in the novelized version, it's *supposed* to be all happening in Kirk's head due to him picking up "temporal echoes" of his own future thoughts and memories as crosses over his own timeline during the slingshot maneuver.

Already in the films you've had A science fiction epic, an action-drama, an adventure-drama, and now a comedy-adventure. What awaits you next? Well... We'll see, won't we. I admit, I am always a little envious of those that watch Star Trek for the first time, particularly the original show and movies as they are my childhood favorites. If I may make a suggestion, you might check out a few more of the series episodes before you continue with the films? Episodes like Journey to Babel, Amok Time, Balance of Terror, Day of the Dove, and City on the Edge of Forever, would really give you an even deeper appreciation of these characters. I saw this movie when it first came out and I loved it. I left the whole way through. I wasn't really caught up in the save the whales thing at the time because at the time in the mid-1980s it was over hyped in my opinion and now we know since the whales have actually rebounded and they are more abundant than they were back then I was right. But at any rate when I saw the movie I loved it. It was so funny and so much fun and it was my favorite of all of them I think.

However, this was never said on-screen, and it was never followed through. It may have been brought-up in a novel-or-two after-the-fact, but- as Roddenberry insisted- 'If it isn't on-screen, it isn't canon'.
@@WillTalksMovies That Roddenberry quote, "If it isn't 'on-screen, it isn't canon'." is factual in basically every single modern franchise. The only one where the opposite is true is Star Wars, where Disney cross-promotes books, comics, and other media as "canon" when it deems it so. That's why books, comics, etc that were published prior to the Disney acquisition "Legends". Even some that were approved of, and considered by Lucas himself as "canon" were rebranded as "Legends". Doing so allows Disney to "pick and choose" from those sources what they consider to be "actual canon".
In order for Gillian Taylor to be Carol Marcus (besides the name change) she would have to also go back in time 20+ years to give birth and raise her son. The movie may be TImey Whimey but it's not Wibbley Wobbley.
This such a fun and charming movie! I absolutely love this one! As a kid, I had this movie on VHS, and I must have watched it countless times! It's just such a good time. :) Also, time travel is definitely a recurring trope in Star Trek! The original series had a good handful of time-travel episodes, and this is definitely not the last Star Trek movie whose plot will revolve around it! ;) And now get ready. You just watched another one of the best Trek movies, and the next one is widely regarded as one of the worst. :P But don't worry, even when Trek is bad, it's still usually fun! And you can never go wrong with Kirk, Spock, and Bones! So I'm still looking forward to your reaction of the next one!
As I understand, many of the crowd shots of them walking in San Francisco are just average people. They had the crew in costumes just walking down the streets.
Correct. Khan’s obsession with revenge on Kirk is analogous to Ahab and the whale. Khan even quoted multiple times from Moby Dick, and the book was on a shelf in their cargo containers on Seti Alph V.
Forgive me, but - a heatwave in the UK? When was that, then? The weather has been cold and miserable all year. Anyway, aside from that, I saw this in the cinema and it was a great experience. It brought back some of the fun side of the original series, after all the serious angst of the first three movies. When the Bird of Prey decloaked above the whaling ship, the entire audience applauded. I've never heard that, before or since! Plus, Catherine Hicks. 😍😍 There's a sequel of sorts to this film, in comic book form - a graphic novel called 'Debt of Honor'. Most of it is about a mystery from Kirk's past, but it's bookended by Kirk visiting Gillian on her 'science vessel' as she watches over George and Gracie. Great theory about Gillian being David's mother but obviously the times don't match up, and nor do the names - Carol Marcus was, what, 25 years ago? Probe: Where have you been? G&G: We've just been transported from the past to save this planet from you. Probe: But what happened to the others? G&G: The humans hunted us to extinction. We like Dr Gillian but the rest are murdering b%$£$£$&%s. Probe: Okay. Well, you enjoy yourselves, I'm going now but I'll be back soon once I've figured out how to eliminate the humans. G&G: All right, toodles. By the way, isn't this plot a bit like the Vger plot from the Motion Picture, but with laughs and whales? Probe: Let's not dwell on that, I'm sure the next film will be completely different. See you soon.
The Klingons'/Kruge's actions are actually rather defensible. The destruction of the Mutara Nebula sure looked like a very visible demonstration of a terrifying new weapon. The real explanation (Khan, etc) sounds ridiculous. David's repeated claims that Genesis doesn't work are insulting if you see it as a weapon in the guise of a terraforming device. Kruge's ship destroying the Grissom was clearly accidental considering he immediately executed the responsible man. Kruge killing David was pretty much a war crime though, and is the only thing that prevents Kirk being guilty of perfidy for the false surrender luring the Klingons to the booby trapped Enterprise. It's actually a small miracle all this didn't spiral into war.
Admiral Cartwright, Brock Peters, is the best Darth Vader.....look up the Star Wars radio dramas, here on RU-vid, its a whole new experience. Same stories, expanded. Mark Hamill is in it, too. I will never recommend it enough.
8:45 I watched probably a dozen different reactors do this film, and you're only the second one I've seen that realized that was whale song before Spock did. 28:30 "The music feels like a Christmas movie." It WAS a Christmas movie. The title-theme is especially Christmasy It's ironic that Kirk and crew traveled though time in a vehicle that was stolen from Doc Brown.
Please watch the original series! You get to see salt vampires, a cloud monster that smells of honey, Uhura singing, space hippies, the first interracial mouth kiss in the history of television! It’s all there and so much more!
@@WillTalksMovies That would be awesome! Many are surprised at how good it is, as the original series used famous science fiction authors of the era, rather than TV writers, which is what every series since the original has done.

Loving your Star Trek reaction videos! Yes, this movie is the closure of the Genesis trilogy. It's brought some great personal closure to the characters. The next movie is pretty much a stand alone adventure and one of the least good of the films. The 6th movie is the original cast finale and very good. It brings an epic closure to the films and original cast legacy. I dont know if you're going to watch any of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I hope you are and highly recommend it, but, if you are planning on watcning TNG, whether the entire series or even just select episodes, in that instance I'd recommend holding off on watching Star Trek VI until the middle of TNG, season 5. It's not crucial to do that but it would add a few more sweet pay offs to the viewing experience. Best Regards!
Upgraded Enterprise? No. There is debate about which ship it was before being rechristened as the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A. Some say it was the U.S.S. Ti-Ho - a newly built Constitution II-class Starship, while others including myself think that it is in fact the U.S.S. Yorktown NCC-1717, which was mentioned earlier on in the film. The ship's Captain, Joel Randolph did say that they were trying to create a solar sail. The Writer's Guide for TNG as well as the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the AMT Instructions for the Enterprise-A model kit, and even Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek himself has said that it was the Yorktown that was rechristened as the Enterprise-A.
Or, if he wants to keep the Star Trek theme going, he could watch the 1998 version starring another Captain of the Enterprise, Patrick Stewart. Not making any quality comparisons here, just making a suggestion. BTW, Gregory Peck does make an appearance in the 1998 version.
